It comes from wild cabbage. You have probably seen it along beaches without knowing what you were looking at. I often forage it in the summer. It is already salted from all the sea water, which is quite neat when you are hiking
I grew brussels sprouts for the first time last season and was shocked to see them pop back up on my garden this year as I had cut them all at the soil level and didnt know they would come back from the root. I also was disappointed last season because I wanted to seed save but didnt get any seeds. All brassica are bi-annual plants. They always love for 2 years. That's why you don't need to chop the whole plant off - you csn just keep peeling/cutting few leaves from kale or Brussels sprouts, from the bottom of the stalk. The top will keep growing new leaves/sprouts. The are some varieties which are perennial - I.e. live for many years and grow into more of a bush
There’s no need to cut the whole plant down. Harvest brussels sprouts from the bottom up as they grow. They can be twisted right off without using a knife. The plant will continue to grow taller and produce more.
If its in cooler climate than theres a limited season so often just cut the whole thing like this vid bc theres not really time for a second batch before frost kills the plant
Freshly grown Brussels sprouts have a better taste than frozen or store bought …once you spoil yourself with the taste of fresh ones you can’t go back to the store bought ones
a couple more tips: you can just twist or cut off individual sprouts as you need them and leave the rest on the plant so that they don't go bad. also frost makes brassicas (which brussels sprouts are a part of) less bitter and more tender, so if you live in a region where you get frost, waiting until it happens can make the sprouts taste better.
If you pluck the sprouts off from the bottom as they mature, there is no need to cut the stem. The plant will produce sprouts through autumn and mild winters. When a severe frost is forecast, dig up the plant with the roots and hang them in storage. This helps keep the sproats longer.
Many plants when stressed put extra effort into maturing and producing seed/fruits in time. Moving energy/sugars from stalks/stems into fruits is one form.
I have about 5 plants growing right now so the timing of this video is on point. I had no idea that they would regrow if I leave the stalk. Hey I seen another TH-camr say the best thing you can do with your extras from each plant is to compost only that and save it for next season grow the brussels sprouts in the exact same spot. Because the leaves and the excess that you were throwing to the hens will actually have the exact nutrients that the plant needs and created for itself. So by reusing Brussel sprout sprouts for brussels sprouts or cabbage scraps for cabbage etc. doing them all individually like that will actually help next year’s crops do better
This sounds cool, but really isn’t a great idea. Composting stuff individually would be a pain, and the idea about the plant producing the nutrients it needs isn’t really accurate. In addition, growing the same plant in the same spot can lead to issues with disease. Far better to just compost everything normally, and occasionally top up your soil with fertilizer or mulch.
I always make the brussel sprouts steamed and roast bacon pieces and apples in a pan and put in the end the brussel sprouts to it… sweet and savoury at the same time…
For real! I NEVER had them growing up and the family I've made (mostly my husbabd) doesn't like them!! 😭 They do enjoy broccoli, but still don't eat it often 😢

We love our Brussel sprouts! Especially in stir fry, kids love em too! 3rd year growing these beauties, so easy!! Blessings and namaste family 🙏 😇 ❤️ 💪 🌎 ✌️
@Jenner Judice I don't do much out of the ordinary. I usually give them about 1.5 to 2 feet clearance from other plants as the plant is small it's leaf span can get large. I typically feed them fish emulsion every 2-3 weeks along with the rest of the garden. Mainly keep a close eye on the very center at the top where new growth is coming for green worms. They can do some serious damage, especially if there's more than 1. U can do the cut and come back or harvest after or before frost. They're sweeter after a few light frosts. Make sure they get atleast 6-8 hrs of sun. More is better. The leaves are also edible, nutty taste.Blessings and namaste 🙏 ❤️

You really make me happy. You make me feel like I can actually grow and have a productive garden.😊
Amen ❤
Brussels sprout be like: bUt YoU diDn’T hAvE tO cUt Me OfF
I’m enjoying learning from you. Thank you
Love Brussels sprouts and so does my son and granddaughters
My brussels are normally 3+ feet tall, I've never seen a plant so stout as these.
Yea, your right
The hens were probably thinking... Ooh yeah, salad! Imma get back to that diet routine!
Holy Brussel! Fantastic growth there.
The chickens will also produce those nutrients back for you in manure, plus give you eggs. If you have chickens, I’d just give them to the chickens.
@@D71219ONE I agree chicken compost gonna been way more nutrient rich than just using the leaves
@@thiccityd9773 yes I thought the same thing, avoid growing the same crops in the same place every year to avoid disease.
Much better off to rotate your crops
i love brussels sprouts so much!!
“Believe it or not, _that_ is a broccoli” 😂
I always make the brussel sprouts steamed and roast bacon pieces and apples in a pan and put in the end the brussel sprouts to it… sweet and savoury at the same time…
You should try roasting the sprouts either the bacon, roasted sprouts are a whole new experience my friend
Brussels sprouts are underrated.
They taste like small fart packages.
@@parsahz1163so does any brassica if you suck at cooking them. Try some new recipes and you’ll find that isn’t the case
For real! I NEVER had them growing up and the family I've made (mostly my husbabd) doesn't like them!! 😭 They do enjoy broccoli, but still don't eat it often 😢
most veggies fit that category, but they're definitely delicious
Totally man they just got a bad name from people preparing them terribly
Brussels sprouts ate one of my absolute favorite veg almost any way you cook them except dont over cook. Turns into fart in a jar 😅
I've never seen a brussel sprout plant. Very cool.
You haven't had Brussel sprouts until you've had crispy roasted brussel sprout petals with truffle salt. To die for.
I admire your ability to grow vegetables you are blessed
Love them Roasted/Braised, along with seasonings, soy sauce, roasted sesame seed oil and/or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar! ❤😊
Try it with seasonings and mollasses yum
My favorite yummy!!!
Butter and salt
Roasted with garlic, butter, and candied bacon!
Try a little molasses sometime 👍
Okay so now i want a tiny house with a garden and some adorable chickens to give garden scraps to. Dang it this dream is becoming more unattainable with every house short i see 😂
Dang, those brussels do be sprouting
Brussel sprouts are soooooo yummy! 😋
I had no idea that they grew this way. Thanks!
Man, the Brussel Tops (leaves) are the best part!
Nothing beats a fresh garden vegetable
You can actually buy them on the stalk at some green grocers here in England, sans leaves.
You can eat the leaves and stalk though
@@Chaos_Senpai They always remove the leaves unfortunately.
Sam o'Nella raised me well with that fact.
Our collards have been thriving in the cold and the smaller ones are ridiculously delicious right now!
We love our Brussel sprouts! Especially in stir fry, kids love em too! 3rd year growing these beauties, so easy!! Blessings and namaste family 🙏 😇 ❤️ 💪 🌎 ✌️
Do you have any tips please
Waiting for mine to get bigger SPROUTS.
Same. When did your plants go into the garden? I began adding organic time released fertilizer. ::fingers crossed::
so a cabbage basically
YES AND YES 🥰😘
Those r my FAVORITE! I wish I wasn't so terrible at growing things🖤
