Rescuing a Peugeot 205 Part 1 - Stripping out, Cutting and Welding

  • I bought this MOT failure 205 GR from a friend in February, and decided it's too sweet of a car to scrap (he was struggling to sell it so that was becoming the only option!). Join me on this mini two-part project, a break from major restorations!
So I filmed this back in February/early March (hence the lack of lapel microphone and a Saab with more paint on it) but regrettably lost a lot of footage. I have cobbled something together though so do enjoy! Part two coming tomorrow... hopefully.

My mother got a white 1988 5 door 205, it is more healthy underneath but looks rougher than this one. Thanks for keeping a 205 alive. This is really a remarkable little nugget.

I cannot wait to see if a profit is turned on this car. In any event, your desire to save them all is distinctly charming.

Thank you! By the time I get round to selling this car it would probably make a healthy profit, because it would be classed as antique. Although I might consider parting with it next year. Been a fairly useful little thing really!

The weird thing is, 205s never really had any rust traps and only started really rusting a few years ago. They just got so old that tinworm was inevitable.
They truly are delightful cars though.

Common fault is that the heater matrix fails and pumps green coolant into the front footwells. Might be why the underlay is so knackered and that's why it's also gone green! Did it on mine.

Did on mine too, I ripped out the underlay as it was soaking and will never dry due to the rubber/plastic backing to the carpet. Luckily I caught it early and happened to have a new/old OE stock heater matrix and metal pipes amongst my spares stash as the original matrix was actually fine but the metal, pipes were basically like Swiss Cheese!

Back in the day I've always wished that they made a 5 door version of the 205 GTi with the 1900 injection engine - Sadly they only gave this option on the larger 309 GTi - You know what I'm going to say next ! - Sort out the bodywork and drop a nice 1.9 or 2.0 16v engine in it and create the car Peugeot never did ! - Best of luck with what you decide as its YOUR car ! 🙂
Edit: I just remembered that they did in fact put the 105 bhp version of the 1900 8 valve engine into the 5 door 205, It was in the limited edition "Gentry" model and most of them were 4 speed autos ! with 11.7 secs 0-60mph time instead of 7.8 secs the "GTi" model with the same basic 1900 engine does... also I think there was also a 1600 version of the 1900 205 GTi (1580cc instead of 1905cc) and that did 0-60mph in 8.6 secs and made 115 bhp ! instead of the 81 hp this engine made in non GTI form when installed in the 305, 405 and the Citroen BX 16 model from the same era.

Looks like your lift is not on the fore jacking points (the sills should have a hardened steel jacking point near the wheels). That's a good way to damage the floor pan and crush where the water bungs are making another rust point.

Cheers Dude! Ah yes, those jacking points I was welding up. Would've been a bit awkward to repair those if the lift was on those sections. Thankfully the Peugeot 205 doesn't weigh 2 tonnes and my lift has wide soft rubber feet. Those hardened floor pan sections escaped without even a dent

@@britishswedishresto9577 haha fair enough mate, just FYI as my second 205 has big dents in those sections where some numpty had jacked up on both sides and dented the drain holes, so much so that you could see the dents when the carpet was removed in the cabin. It's a nightmare to put right as they are double skinned sections and need pulling out and hammering on the inside too. 🙄
