    I watched both videos and laughed so hard.... Advice was requested so here goes from a crazy plant lady horticulturalist. Best advice.... First, know what kind of light the individual plant needs... very few houseplants actually need or can thrive in full sun! Also, don't over water, roots rot! Next, don't be afraid to stick your finger in the soil, it may look dry on the surface but there can be plenty of moisture just an half inch below. Opposite of over watering, if your plant dries out substantially you will probably need to break up the dried soil. It basically hardens to the point it sheds water instead of absorbing it. You might think you are watering your plant but it won't get to the roots. I mean... I could go on and on but last, last thing, if you are trying hard and are still having issues, city water (aka treated water) could be the problem. After all that.... I really hope you actually wanted advice, hahaha.... Nerd alert, I get excited to share plant knowledge.

    • @mysteryachiever
      @mysteryachiever 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point about the city water.… I think what newbies have the most trouble with is figuring out HOW do you water just enough? HOW do you know if you’re overwatering or under watering?

      @OliveDNorth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @OliveDNorth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Over-watering is a big thing. People see a leaf droop and douse it more, not realizing it can be a sign of too much as well as too little water. Always check to see if it's actually dry!

    • @OliveDNorth
      @OliveDNorth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mysteryachiever as a general rule, let it dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly. There's a few plants that like to be perpetually damp, but this is how most should be watered.

  • @Midori_Seabreeze
    @Midori_Seabreeze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Advice: if you buy a fancy plant and can’t remember the name, paint a stone or cute sign with the name. Put the advice for how to care for it on the back: full sun, partial etc.
    Always! Repot out of those plastic pots into a pot suitable for the plant. Clay pots are a good go to for most. You can paint them a little, but don’t completely coat the pot. It needs to breathe.
    Keep a thermometer and a hygrometer near large sections of plants. There might be an app for that.
    I also move mine around whether it’s winter or summer or time of day. My Japanese apartment has zero insulation, so it’s super important. Most of the time I keep them all in one area of the apt then decorate when I have company.
    But really I just want her to be able to go buy some more plants. 💕💕💕

    Heidi, I just learned about the “root ball”. Apparently you have to break apart the compacted roots when you get plants in a plastic pot. No one told me! This video is me. I don’t have time to do anything with plants (3 kids also) yet I keep buying them.

    • @leonorleao9086
      @leonorleao9086 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could break the roots a bit. However, you don't have to break the roots before planting, most plants will survive even if you don't as long as you care for them properly. Good luck with your gardening adventures :D

    • @jwrightgardening
      @jwrightgardening 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is very true. You should pull the plant out of the pot and look at it. Most plants need to be repotted if the roots are visible all over the outside of the soil when you remove the pot. I bought a tiny rose bush in a decorative pot in clearance after mother's day one year and when I went to immediately repot it, I discovered there were actually FIVE tiny bushes crammed in one tiny pot. They do that so it looks really full but don't have to wait for a plant to grow big and full. I got five bushes for less than a dollar each out of it but I felt bad for everyone who bought one and couldn't figure out why their rose bush died just weeks later.

    • @ambersimerly1803
      @ambersimerly1803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard that too and then years later someone explained that the roots sense more space when transplanted, so you don't have to break the root ball. Idk which is true anymore. I'll have to experiment lol

    My favorite plant quote from the amazing Ursula Vernon:
    "Killing a supposedly unkillable plant just makes people think they have a black thumb. There is no such thing. Nor green. There is only how many plants you are willing to murder to find something that lives."
    So go for it and get those plants! Also maybe try a local nursery, they tend to have better selections and more knowledgeable staff to help pick the plant that works with you.

  • @tobiahmadison4389
    @tobiahmadison4389 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Yeah Heidi! Get those plants! Name those plants! Love those plants! If they are inside, they don't need as much water, but if they are outside, especially in the summer, don't be too greedy with your water! Also keep in mind that repotting a plant is one of the most difficult things for them, so if they die after repotting, don't take it too hard.

    • @leonorleao9086
      @leonorleao9086 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you repot plants make sure that the size difference is not too great. If a plant has too much space it can easily cause the roots to rot and it will take a long time for it to root properly. So just go up a couple of centimeters at a time :D

    A few tips about gardening for Heidi:
    1.) Cherry tomato plants and rhubarb are pretty easy to grow.
    2.) Tomato fertilizer spikes are great for increasing yields and ensuring the tomato plants are well-nourished.
    3. Geraniums and mint family plants help repel mosquitoes, wasps, and hornets.
    4. For outdoor plants, choose flowers, trees, and shrubs that are native to your part of the country because they’ll both grow better than non-native plants and they are more familiar to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds as well as local wildlife.
    5.) Carefully read the planting and care instructions that come with the plants or seeds.
    6. Fencing around the garden helps keep out rabbits, but make sure it’s high enough.

    Olla and watering stakes are great for slowly and steadily watering plants so that you don't kill them. Check early and often for signs of stress and act accordingly. Also some plant like wetter roots while others like drier roots so tailoring your soil to what you are planting will make it much easier. Mixes with vermiculite, coco coir or Peet are great for water retention and slow release. Fertilizer and/or bioactive soil is important for plant healthy since that is what gives them nutrients and helps them stay healthy for longer. Dead soil will lead to dead plants. Healthy living soil leads to healthy living plants.

    Heidi, I used to really be a “plant murderer.” But I have gotten much better! I am still learning, but my front porch has a dozen plants that are doing pretty great. One thing that I have been doing the past couple of years is designate Wednesday as plant-watering day. That way, I don’t have to worry about over- or under-watering simply because I can’t remember when I last watered. The other thing that I do is use the same container and fill it with the same amount of water each time. Keep trying and good luck!🍀👍 ❤️

    I couldn't keep anything alive either until my mother-in-law taught me a few key things -- it's light and water but also drainage! So for indoor pots, put down some rocks at the bottom & then add soil. That & if you're planting from seed, till the soil so it's loose so the small seed roots can push through and around the soil easily. If you're re-potting a plant, push down the root ball firmly so you don't have any air pockets. And yeah, since then, full on gardening -- herbs, vegetables, not just flowering plants. Have fun this spring & hope any of this helps! Love you guys!!! This is my favorite channel on TH-cam :)

    Try a ZZ plant. Mines still alive after a year! It thrives on neglect, seriously, I water once a month and that’s it.

    Love this video. I had to get rid of all my houseplants after I killed so many. I live in Minnesota and got involved in the master gardener program here after my houseplant experience. The master gardeners have a wealth of knowledge - I would recommend calling their garden question line or emailing the master gardener program wherever you are - you will learn so much. (:

    I also live somewhere dry and have 3 kiddos running around so the best thing i can recommend for outside flower beds would be some sort of garden fabric and mulch on top. You retain so much more moisture and don't have to worry about watering nearly as often.

      Even better, find the natives that grow within a few miles of your house. We're moving to a new subdivision, and there's one patch of wild area just up the road, and I'm going to figure out what used to grow where my backyard is.

    Heidi I am with you on the plant buying spree every spring I absolutely go crazy buying new plants around the house. I’m 61 now and it took me many years of trial error blood sweat and mini tears to learn about my plants, but I am now call the Queen green thumb of the family. As for bees we need all of them, just blow them away do not run. Talk to them while you work tell them you want to coexist with them. And they will actually leave you alone. I love how your husband reenact what all we women do. Big but I have seen some men do the same thing or worse with their own yards especially when they have nice riding lawnmowers and fancy tools to groom their yards. Lol love you guys keep the films coming😊💕😂

    Watch the weather forecast and don’t plant too soon. Spring gets us all.

  • @m.a.rogers9158

    Just love them. 🌱😁 Really I would say it is in the soil test. What I mean by that is just testing the moisture of the soil with your fingers. What does it feel like one inch down? You want it moist but not "wet".
    It'll also be in learning what each plant wants. Making sure you have it in the right space (sunny or shade or somewhere in between).

    I grew up on a farm. I had no experience with house plants, just those in the garden. After I got married someone gave me a Snake Plant. I had it for a few years, but after one of our moves it disappeared and I thought that somehow it had simply not made it onto the truck. 6 months or so later I was preparing to sort through the final box --clothing. I took the clothes out and there sat the Snake plant--my husband's doing. It was still alive and lived for several more years. I finally gave it away. I am not sure you can kill those things.

    Pothos is super easy to keep alive and I love it! Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what works in your house or yard but usually if I do enough research for something super hardy and drought tolerant in my zone I do okay. :-P

    1. perennials come back annuls you need to replant each year
    2. starting a veggie garden in co
    - plant lettuce, spinage, roots ( beets, carrots...), potatoes and onions the last week of March
    - mid may plant most of everything else
    - end of May plant herbs, flowers and store bought plant (peppers, tomatoes...)

    We just spent 4 days moving across Canada in cold weather and some of my plants took a big hit in their health even though I had them in the car (not the cold moving truck) and brought them into the hotel room every night.
    I had to prune my young pothos and mini monsters down to three healthy leaves each. I also have a black thumb, but I was able to keep almost every plant I bought during lockdowns.
    My husband just told me yesterday, “You really do love and care for your plants while they’re dying.”
    I talk to them all the time, and I’ve given one a name... Joshua, because we grew him from seeds we bought at Joshua Tree NP.

    Yes!!!, Heidi needs all the plants!!! And yes she should be able to feed her family with the food she grows!! (Lol on the single fruit first harvest… but i get excited about it too and no one in my house cares!)
    As for tips…. Well ya just have to do it! Vegetables are much easier for me than house plants but now I’ve finally gotten the groove of it… i pretty much forget about them till i see them droop slightly. Succulents get drips of water every week and the rest i let sit in water to absorb from the bottom throughout.. and your welcome lol!!!
    Love you guys!♥️

    HI Taylor and Heidi! Absolutely LOVE your videos! As far as any advice I can give you Heidi...when "feeding" your houseplants, I heard recently that soaking some banana peels in water for a couple of days and then watering your plants with the mixture does WONDERS for them! It's the Potassium from the bananas that do the trick. Happy Gardening!

    It’s almost always better to underwater than over water plants. Wiping your plants leafs and rotating the plant help with even growth and photosynthesis 🌱 Also, sometimes plants just die, even if you take good care of them.

    Cacti are more challenging than you think. People tend to overwater them which is guaranteed death. Florence needs to also be kept in a well draining pot with a lot of natural light. One final tip, most houseplants don't do well the direct sun. Love your videos, love Heidi's reactions.

    For indoor plants get a large bowl and fill with water and liquid fertilizer. Place your plants in it. Let the plants drink from the bottom up. They won't take more than they need. Repeat weekly. For my large indoor plants I use the bathtub. Hope this helps.

    lol, Heidi is hilarious.
    Plant tips: I water my plants every two weeks. I’ve had no problem. ( though they do get lots of water ) In the summer, I water once a week. Most plants like like. Don’t shove them in a corner where the light can’t get too. The one on the Fireplace needs more light. The one behind the piano would thrive by the light. I also buy them a bigger pot as well as most are root bound. Good luck! 😊

    Stick your finger in the soil before you water the plant. If a bunch of soil sticks to your finger, it doesn't need to be watered yet :) Also using an app to find out what your dying plant needs is super helpful!
