The surface of a running track is uniform ... you dont get divots.. its designed to maximise speed... the same with running footwear ... football boot design is a compromise between speed and foot and ankle protection
Top Footballers can play 55+ games a season through 4 weather seasons.....A football match lasts a minimum of 90 minutes and up to 120 minutes (plus injury time) a 100m race is over in under 10 seconds...footballers run between 8 and 11 km a match... sprinters use blocks...footballers are already in motion....sprinters run in a straight line in lanes...wind speed counts against sprinters not footballers
Im sure there are many many more differences and variables...to compare the two sports is rather pointless imho.
Just my opinion...but for me, a top league football match players is a far, far superior sport and as a spectacle will always be far more interesting and enthralling than sprinting...the only thing sprinting has over football (and athletics in general has the same appeal) is that, at the top level, the worlds best compete directly against each other pretty much throughout the entire season...and of course there is always the potential for world records to be broken in any race
