  • This is an excerpt taken from the #1 episode - pilot and shows what really happened behind the scenes when KITT "drove" - "auto cruised"...IMHO, a super rare video!

The episode Just my Bill was obvious you can see a man in the passenger side. If any of you have Netflix go watch that episode and 6 minutes in when Michael parks the car in the garage and the parking cop walks over to the car and you see someone ducking in the car. When the cop goes to the phone you see the guy driving the car. I wondered why it was necessary for him to be in the shot when the cop first came to inspect the car. I think they didn't know at the time that this show would be in global syndication and these mistakes would be analyzed for the world to see. It's easy to nitpick now but they did a heck of a good job for the time period they were in.

You're missing the point. The glass is in the headrest of the front seat. The stunt driver sits behind a fake seat. There was also a car that was right-hand drive so the Hoff could jump out and the car drive away in the same shot.

Yes, that was a trick PMD seat. They modified the seat to accomodate the guy sitting behind it, with his arms going through the front of it. They had a small 5 to 10 inch size steering wheel down below underneath the gull wing, joined to one of the steering linkages to drive it like that in some scenes. The gull wing steering wheel had a chain of some sort attached to the lower wheel on a sprocket, so when the tiny wheel turned below, the gull wing turned, leaving us to think KITT drove himself.

Memory - Don't u sue them! Do you agree??
KITT - Hey don't drag me into this!
Memory - T_T What happened to "LIFE LONG COMPANNION"?
    KITT - I don't know.

Darkened glass was often used, such as the episode where Michael losses his memory (Knightmares) and KITT drives after him in an alley (before jumping over the road construction) The whole front window is darkened!

Lmao I just started watching Series 1 again and spotted the same thing funny as hell
Only a pessimistic adult would see never would of been spotted as a kid
Also when he pulls up there is the big beige lump behind the seat were the dude is hidden under. Michael also stares at the back window & slowly gets in to make sure he's out the way lol genius

Thanks for this. I think. Now I can't unsee it. And it's much more clear in episode 6 ("Just My Bill"). 9 minutes in, you can see the driver's head poking up between the passenger seat and the door. 13 minutes in, you can see how it was really done. The driver is sitting inside the hollow front seat, with a cloth tent on the back hiding him and the black panel on the "headrest" covering his face.

well they could have used servos and a remote control..
but a side shot looking in would probably reveal the motors that would turn the wheel..
that tinted glass and maybe black colored servo motor control parts may have hidden it though

Hmm. They used similar trickery in the Transformers movie 07.You can see the driver's arm at one point as Bumblebee drives away after Mikaela insults him.

now with myth busters on it that can actually remote control a car so if they remade a half decent knight rider they could do that, and knight rider is up there with star trek because it was way ahead of its time and it was even before KR

Id rather watch this show, with all it's errors, than watch KR 2008

Also, you could sometimes see a metal rig mounted under the front spoiler - which was used to tow the car.

I noticed that years ago. Knight rider is cool in all, but they needed to look over there episodes for improvements. Some episodes were extremely obvious a blind man could notice them. There was one, I can't recall the episode name but, one's floating around on youtube were we see someone hiding in the back seat while the doors open. Come on!!

@ausknight2k I don't think you realize how hard it is to create good CGI stuff. It's not "just the computer" which does it, it's always a human artist behind it. I admire the work of good CGI artists.

I saw an episode. KITT was at Pursuit Mode, looking for Micheal. The back of the driver's seat is a lot wider. I think someone's camouflaged behind it and drove it from there. Somehow.

It does defeat the point of having a molecular bondage shell but this is television and the window was down so you could get a clear view of the driver without reflection from the glass.

@Yoctopory it may be hard but not as creative. the computer does most of the work. can you imagine the creativity behind a show like Knight Rider? Do you notice a difference between the original Knight Rider and the The New Knight Rider? Did you notice that the New Knight Rider only went one season? And how many seasons did the original went? My point is im not trying to knock off CGI, but back in the days you had to be high skilled for what they did in the original series.

Funny, I just watched the first episode and noticed the arm, the guy behind the front seat and the upholstery and arm moving off of the steering wheel. I went to look it up on the net to see if there is any other video of this and I saw the same scene!

@ausknight2k Its really cool that it was all real back in the day, but I think Knight Rider went through 80 something Trans Ams during its run. Its just far too expensive to do something like that today compared to just using CGI which also puts nobody at risk of injury.

Well just to let you all know Kitt was the greatest car of its time and they really do now have cars that can drive them selves I saw it on CNN it's not just science fiction any more today's science fiction. Has became tomorrow's reality google alone with a few others are testing this vehicles as we speak now in Nevada and also California and by the next 6 years these vehicles will be out on the market just go to TH-cam and look up google driverless vehicles and CNN also has something on here

The crew that worked on Knight Rider were just pure GENIUS.
All those stunts done with REAL cars and REAL drivers (eg. jumping over a wide ravine, ski mode, etc.) none of this fake CGI crap that movie makers are addicted to now.
Let's see a movie made today without the aid of computers and see how "good" their special effects are ...

I Think the reason newKnightRider failed badly was take Kitt away and it was just another formulaic CSI-NCIS-Hawaii 5.0 flashy cop style drama quickcut action, hi-tech wizardry, sexy boobitches, and CGI crapola, Oh and my reason for not watching, KITT was a Beautiful Sleek 82 PONTIAC Trans Am, not a shithole FORD
