    45 is a challenging hollow point for manufacturers. Low speed and big holes make it hard. Best bet is to go with something that expands big and sacrifice some penetration like the HST. In most test it usually gets 12/14 inches. Great for people who live in apartments and such who must really worry about over penetration.

      Yeah it would have went to 12 to 14 if it was fbi standard 10% gel but he was using 20% synthetic gel 10% sythetic the bullet will penatrate more than 10%organic fbi gel so same with 20% whatever the bullet goes to add 2 to 4 inches if it was in 10% fbi organic gel😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

      lemonslicewithice 101 not likely. ClearBallistics gel 10% typically allows 2-4 inches more penetration than real gel. Hence none of the industry experts use it. If something goes 12 inches in 10% ClearBallistics gel it’s guaranteed to be less than that in actual calibrated gel.

    • @big6red3
      @big6red3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mrandher83 yep thats true but 1 shot is using 20% ballistic gel which will have 30%less penatration then the 10% clear ballistic gel

    My go to Hollowpoints for my 1991A1 that us use for home defense is either the Remington HTP or Federal HSP +P. I've only patterned my pistol with the latter so see where shots tend to land because +P isn't great for the pistols durability. Still, I'm satisfied with its accuracy at 25 yards which is the longest distance with a clear view in my house. The Remington I tend to use quite a bit more though since it is standard velocity, costs a little less, and is more commonly found in our local gun shop. Since I like to replace the ammo in my pistol mags every year for reliability's sake, its key that I'm able to rely on my local shop to have ammo when I need it

    I think the problem you are having with expansion is, you may need a hard surface behind the denim that mimics bone. Maybe a piece of plywood or something similar. That should force jumpstart expansion to give better results. In real life situations, be they hunting or self defense, there is high probability these bullets will have bone interaction. Once they pass through ribs or other bones all of them should expand pretty much the way they are designed too. Maybe in a future video put a stack of pork ribs behind the denim. That should yield better results.

    At an average of 800 fts, most .45 jhp won't expand well, and it's even trial and error to find one that will feed consistently. Truly, the most reliable ammo to use is good ol' 230 grain hardball. I can carry anything in my HK USP, but when it comes to my Kimber Rapide, I'm most confident in 230 grain hardball.

    Don't need a fancy hollow-point in .45 acp. Winchester white box 230 grain HP's are extremely effective. Hornady makes their .45 bullets too tough for the velocities they are typically launched - no matter the barrel length. Federal HST's are the typically some of the best. Speer Gold Dots are very good as well.

    @broot1375 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the issue is most of these rounds were probably developed more for the 9mm cartridge which travels much faster. Therefore the 45 acp counterparts dont have enough velocity to get good expansion. Best bet for a 45 might be the HST or some speer GD

  • @tjk177
    @tjk177 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Like your videos man, keep them coming!
    The HST (my carry ammo in 9mm) did flawlessly. Both of the Hornady rounds did terrible; with the first showing barely any signs of expansion and the latter two no expansion. The relatively slow speed of the 45 often times does not give the bullets enough energy to properly expand, although Federal seems to have solved that problem with their HST.
    All that said, the 45 was designed to be the "man stopper" based on the ball (FMJ) round. It would have been good to add that to your test and it may have resulted in perfect FBI depth; albeit with no expansion.
    Given yours and many others testing with the 45, I'm not convinced it's worth the extra money to purchase hollow points versus ball NATO ammo. Over expansion with 45 ball is both relatively nonexistent and more likely collateral damage due to shot misses per the literature.

    I saw that flash again with the HST. I have a hypothesis on the cause. As the bullet enters the gel block, it has some unburnt powder trailing in behind it. When the temporary cavity slams shut, the powder is ignited by compression ignition like how a diesel engine works. Sounds good in principle, but I'm not sure how to test that is the cause. Good video as always!

    Great video. Yeah, 20% clear gel is a little tricky. Shooting a living mammal with blood creates hydraulic force in the hollow point. 45 acp is so big already, and it seems most fully expanded bullets would under penetrate because of the drag. I'm really impressed with the 120gr xtreme defender. 😲

In fact, many will argue that even the HSY failed in the penetration category. I wonder if the already lower velocity of the 45 is impeaded by lower temps? I can’t help but wonder if the cold temps affected the polymer tips in the Hornady loads. The HST loads are an easy out in most calibers ( I mean that in a good way). They always seem to perform well

    • @1ShotTV
      @1ShotTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Richie yeah. The critical duty actually performed the same way it always has for me. Less expansion more penetration. It never expands much more than that so i think it did well. But i kept the gel block in my heated truck until i started so it was only outside for about 10 minutes. So the gel was actually pretty warm.

    • @therichie9916
      @therichie9916 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think it was the gel itself brother. I wonder if the little polymer tips themselves were hardened by the cold. I get what your saying about the minimal expansion and deep penetration of the Critical Duty loads. I’ve tested them several times myself over the last few years. They usually expand better than they did in this vid though. The 185 gr Critical Defense didn’t expand at all and that’s not normal behavior for that load even from a 3.5” barrel in my experience.
      It’s no fault of yours if the cold did harden the polymer tips...Mother Nature is a harsh unforgiving B***h. 😉

    • @1ShotTV

      The Richie ahh gotcha. Yeah they could’ve hardened in there. I want to retest the critical defense in similar conditions and see if it does that again because ive done the 9mm in cold and warm weather and it never completely fails like that. Ill probably throw it in at the end of the next 45 gel test vid just to see if it was a fluke or something else going on.

    The G21SF never really needs to be cleaned even after hundreds of rounds. and I've shot thousands of rnds and it's been more accurate than my 1911 for me.

    Even though this video is 2.5 years old, for what it's worth, I'll leave this comment: Given generally how poorly .45 ACP JHP's perform (HST being an exception here), a companion test of the non-expanding .45 ACP Underwood Xtreme Penetrator and Xtreme Defense would have been enlightening. The 9mm XD's generally outshine even the best JHP's in terms of deep penetration but not over-penetration, with amazingly large wound channels--so I'd love to see what the .45 ACPs do. Perhaps next time.

    And more comfortable to shoot, despite being a .45 instead of a 9mm.

      Joey Martarella I want to do some .357 tests. Typically people prefer the heavier bullets out of short barrels because they penetrate more but its all personal preference. With .357 you really cant go wrong. Such a good cartridge.

  • @windvale
    @windvale 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your results are so consistently atypical that I've gotta think something in your testing protocol must have been off. The HST only penetrated 10", and the other 3 did not expand.

    • @1ShotTV
      @1ShotTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      windvale its 20% ballistics gel. I said that when i started but sometimes people miss it. Which would explain the HST getting 10”. In 10% gel it would have gotten 12-14. The critical duty expanded like its supposed to. It never expands much more than that as it is designed to penetrate more and expand less. Ive done a few vids on different critical duty loads and they all perform that way. The sig has not expanded through heavy clothing in any of the calibers ive tested it in and that seems to be the same results many others are getting with those bullets. The only one that was odd to me was the critical defense. It usually performs perfectly but ive never tested in.45 until now & ive heard from a few people telling me .45acp hollow points are not as consistent as something like a 9mm because of the lower velocity.

    • @windvale
      @windvale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @1ShotTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wastool yep definitely. Ill get 10% gel down the road

    • @wastool
      @wastool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1ShotTV Both 10 and 20% have there place. I'm wondering if the gel being firmer played a role in the other ammunition not expanding. Manufacturers designed their ammunition around 10% gelitan. Obviously ammunition that performs under the greatest range of conditions is preferable. You just need to know which one your looking at, and I didn't catch that it was 20% right away.

      They opted to go 45 for 4 legged critters as much as 2. We have bear, wolf, badger & the occasional cougar....not to mention stray dogs. 45 gives them confidence if they have to use it.

    I too was disappointed and confused about Critical Defense's lack of performance. It might not have the greatest expansion compared to other bullets and it might not have the most penetration as other rounds as well, but I always liked its balance or not too much penetration and being able to penetrate heavy clothing and not losing all of its energy too soon.
    But that crap was surprising. No expansion at all. You could have reloaded that and used it again! All of my .380s, 9mms and .357s are loaded with Critical Defense. My Shield 45 WAS too, but not any more. If your 5 inch 1911 couldn't get any expansion out of that bullet, my 3.3" Shield certainly isn't going to do any better.

    Everybody is a FBI ballistics pro on youtube testing ammo on gel blocks. These specialty ammo videos are a racket to get you to spend more money on their product when regular ammo always did the job just fine. What's more important than all this BS ammo is where you place the lead. If you can't place lead where you want on a target then all the specialty ammo in 20-round magazines ain't going to make you a better shooter.
