I cut mine 3/4 of the roots on 6 year old fig trees for the first time, and they all survived. A have a ton of figs on them.
I was told that I shouldn't root prune that much, but I took the chance and it all worked out well.
PS. I made sure everyday to keep it moist on top...

Great Video - LOVE how you've trained the branching to keep the fruit within reach!

I divided my one fig (4 years old?) last fall, for ease of moving. Had to cut the pot and an electric saw would have been handy! It was sweat labor, but I have 3 now, alive and easy to move in/out.

Lol that electric saw was getting a bit too close to it's own power cable a couple of times for my liking 😱😱.
Reckon that tree will really appreciate that root treatment 👍🤩

Um... after root pruning another 20 trees... there may or may not be a few nicks in the power cord 😱

I have learned so much from your videos! Great work; what kind of saw do you use here to prune the roots? Thanks a lot! 😃

Hi PA Figs. I’m in PA too and just getting into growing figs. How do you know how much is too much in terms of root pruning?
Doesn’t a tree of that size need a certain, minimum amount of roots to support all that growth?

When the tree is dormant, they don't need too much. I usually trim half the root ball off.

Yes, it will help them continue to grow.

Do you usually also prune the top as well?

It is better to prune the top when the tree is dormant, but yes I will still prune some in the Spring.

Did the tree survive? Some heavy pruning lol

Yes. You can trim fig trees nearly back to the root ball and they will survive.
