Honorable mention: Popeye, Moon Patrol, Donkey Kong Jr, Kung Fu Master, Jungle Hunt and Double Dragon. I got the same exact Atari Flashback portable (the 2017 version.) My dad got me one for Christmas back in 2018. I enjoyed playing Pac-Man, Centipede, and Frogger on it, but it doesn't have Mappy and Ms. Pac-Man on it. I don't think Mappy got a port for the Atari game consoles back then. I know there's an Atari 2600 homebrew port of Mappy over on Atariage, which is very nice.
I just got one of these to replace my 2016 version. The screen was way brighter on the 2016 version, and as you mentioned, the sound is muted, probably because of the lack of holes around the speakers on this version. Major bummer, hardly an upgrade when there is an SD card anyway, more like a downgrade.
Paddle games seem to get treated badly in a lot of these retro collections and devices. They do play remarkably well on a modern computer touchpad, so I have the odd situation of Stella on my Mac providing a better experience than most other options. But sometimes I just wish the paddle controller (and its cousin, the Tempest-style rotary encoder) hadn't essentially died as a game control mechanism.
I love my 2017 portable that I got last week and my only 'complaint' is that the D pad only allows for horizontal and vertical moves with diagonal movement not being possible. I only noticed this after researching original games like Adventure where the original manual shows that diagonal movement is possible yet with the Adventure game on the portable, only vertical and horizontal movements are possible. Other than that, this thing is incredible.
I was tempted to do a video on this, but am not in a place to do videos now. I am not sure why anyone on TH-cam didn't mention it, maybe because AtGames wants it hush-hush, but I can confirm the emulation on this year's model is better than the last one. Berzerk worked without needing to me modded. Megamania didn't glitch out either with the graphics on the side.
Check out Megamania, for example. I am between computers now, and not in a place to do TH-cam videos at this time. I am also working on some boardgame stuff, so I don't have times to do videos. I just wanted to get the word out.
So, is Dig Dug the Atari 2600 version also? I know I used just want the 2600 versions on them, but found having arcade versions is often better. Space Invaders is a possible exception here, as it is fun to have both version.
Yep, I agree. it is nice though that some of the games that did not work on the original work on this one though. However, the guys over on Atariage have fixed some of those games to get them to work on the original anyway.
I got mine this weekend and had a question. I have last years FBP as well and the new D-pad on mine is really bad at diagonals, especially on games like Centipede and Missile Command compared to last years. I haven't heard many complaints on this and I was curious if it was just me. Has anyone else felt this way or did I get a defective unit?
mine seems to work fine for me as well as last years. I put my thumb in the middle and lighly push down then pivot my thumb around the dpad. diagonals seem to work best for me doing this.
Maybe mine was defective. In games like Checkers where you can ONLY move diagonally, it was almost impossible to play. You had to force the pad into the corner to make it move. I ended up returning it yesterday. Even if it was only "just as good" as last years, I didn't see a reason to have both. I was just hoping it would be an improvement.
ya, they can be finicky. the newer one does have better rom compatibility. but also has a smaller screen (which I cant really tell the difference to much :P). Also like the easily replaceable battery pack. Just wish they would have put a paddle dial on it so I can play kaboom properly :P
This has a smaller screen compared to V1 right? Why not make a larger screen! Also any ideas on how Mac users can eliminate the ._bin file it makes? Two files are created, annoying.
Same size screen as the V1. also have noticed some games that dont work on the V1 work on this one. Go to the Atariage Thread to find out info on the problem you are having with your MAC, I am not MAC user so dont know.
They ruined it for me with the Pacman crap version they have. The least they could have done, is have a decent version of Pacman without flickering and that would have convinced me to get it for sure.

One of my very favourite channels on you tube. Had the first version of the portable, wasn't bad. UK here
So glad they kept the SD card slot. They really need to do that with the regular flashbacks.
I know, it would be so aweasome!
Totally agree
Brian's Man Cave sdcard atari 2600
where do you get the sd cards at?
BeardsOfWarjard XL - Any store that sells basic electronics like wal mart or bestbuy. Its the same SD card you would use for a camera.

Great to see and American review of such a great product . Thank you and I just subscribed to your channel all the best from Ireland 🇮🇪

Looks like a nice new edition, not worth an upgrade but would be the better one to get out of the two.
It would be nice to see what a real 2600 on the same TV looks like in comparison to the FBP2
I dont have one composite modded, but it does look better on RF than the FBP2 Composite :P
I wasn't a fan of the first one, I ended up returning it. Paddle games are a no go on these things. I'll get the new flashback 8 when they're out.

Thanks, Shawn! Good to know!

@@theskyrax670 im 12 but love retro games consoles. Love it lol

you should make a vid :) I never paid attention to it since the roms I wanted to play were fixed already :P
Check out Megamania, for example. I am between computers now, and not in a place to do TH-cam videos at this time. I am also working on some boardgame stuff, so I don't have times to do videos. I just wanted to get the word out.
i finely found one at Walmart today. i don't know why ebgames never got it but they did get Atari flashback 8 Gold
oh... and it needs wood grain ;-)
@Jackson Nance yes it did! :)
Also, PAC-MAN on this thing is just down-right unplayable, because it requires a lot of precision, which is exactly what this D-pad is missing.
Are you able to place MINECRAFT on the Atari flashback? Well I don't think so it doesn't have enough memory
I have one of them. I got one yesterday.
Hey, is that a headphone jack on the AV cable?
I'm seeing a number of these on ebay selling as "manufacturer refurbished". These things are only a year old, what's up with that?
Wow didn't know they where that small nice
So, is Dig Dug the Atari 2600 version also? I know I used just want the 2600 versions on them, but found having arcade versions is often better. Space Invaders is a possible exception here, as it is fun to have both version.
its the 2600 version
I am not seeing a need for it actually with myself having the original.
Yep, I agree. it is nice though that some of the games that did not work on the original work on this one though. However, the guys over on Atariage have fixed some of those games to get them to work on the original anyway.
Also does plugging the video cable in disconnect the headphones?
Will this play 800,5200 and7800 roms sets or just the 2600 rom sets?
The same company made a Sega gennisis portable
I'm getting this for christmas where do you get the best sd cards for this?
Just picked a new one of these up at Goodwill for 4 bucks. How do you add games to an SD card?
go to the link in the video description - atariage.com/forums/topic/258970-atari-flashback-portable-faq-and-compatibility-list/
You'd be better off modding a handheld like a DS if you are that desperate to take Space Invaders to the bar.
ok? not sure where the desperation is coming from :P
How do I use the sd card and where do I go to download the not included games?
ArcadeUSA are you on atariage.com?

I remember someone comparing them and said that it was in fact a little smaller like 2.2" vs 2.7" or something like that.
well, what do you know it is slightly smaller. I could not tell until I got my ruler out :P
The box on the 2016 version says 3.2" screen. The 2017 box shows the display as being 2.8" screen.
There isnt a way to play all the 2 player games like baseball , checkers, circus
Did it lose any games?
CAN ANYONE HELP ME DOWNLOADING VIDEO GAMES ON MY ATARI PORTABLE?
Too bad they didnt add compatibility for things like Pitfall II, or the Starpath games.
Anyone know if this is a system on a chip or a software emulator?
software, it has some compatibility issues.
shouldn't we own game before downloading them . i know Atari games very old now
I do own the games :P
does it have joust?
no but you can add it via the SD card :P
They ruined it for me with the Pacman crap version they have. The least they could have done, is have a decent version of Pacman without flickering and that would have convinced me to get it for sure.
You can add your own roms. There is one called Pacman 4k now that is what Atari 2600 Pacman should have been in 1982.
Pac-Man was horrible on the System. They need to come out with Atari 7800
Are you family friendly
um ya
Did you fix your grammar?
