I was a correctional officer for 6 years. I saw how some guys on the inside worked out. They do lots of bodyweight exercise, shadow boxing, running on the spot jumping jacks, pullups on a half inch door frame. Let me tell you, these guys have to do this to survive on the inside.
Great point (and Charlie Bronson talks about one of the most neglected muscles there are: The heart). No denying Charlie is a prisoner. His book, Solitary Fitness, is most certainly written by a convict. Thanks Johnny Grube!
Aahmm, the Kavadlo brothers and pretty much all the PCC community? Just saying. We're talking about progressive calisthenics, and you can see a lot of people getting great results with it. "Sure i will build a little strength" yeah, 'cause in order to perform a one arm pull-up with perfect form you need 'little strength', sure.
PCC actually takes a lot from CC, and again, CC is about progressive calisthenics, so i don't get your point actually. It's just that you focus too much on the prison thing and stuff and don't really go deep into it. And no, one arm pull up is pretty damn impressive, given the fact that the majority of people perform some kind of shoulder to the bar one arm pull up and not a full one arm pull up with the right form. Anyway, i'm not changing subject, i don't know what you're talking about.
LOL! CC is definitely not prison training! However, it does prime you for getting into advanced calisthenics (think gymnast level). It doesn't get you to that point, but it builds the foundation to get you at that point. Another thing, and this is very important, while doing 500 burpees is a great accomplishment that most people will never be able to do, after a certain amount, it's just endurance training; training resistance to muscle fatigue, and doesn't do much for strength.
The story where Bronson says he lifted a snooker table is insane. I'm around these tables all the time and I've only heard of one guy bein able to do that.
I have Felon Fitness and definitely my favorite thus far. Penitentary fitness if I can get a copy or if online I will as well as Mr. Bronson's book. I have read snippets of Convict Conditioning and while the bodyweight feats of strength are admirable as well as the effort and research put into the publication, it's simply not practical for a prison or street environment. I train my body not only to maintain fitness and health, but to harden mentally and physically for any unanticipated event. I stick with the basics, pushups, squats, burpees, pullups, neck work, weighted carries, rope skipping and sprints and implement boxing as well. There is another recent book by LJ Flanders called the Cell Workout i may get.
Forget the prison books. Get Johnny Grube's "Ultimate physical Fitness in 5 Minutes" book. He should've named the book 'The Finisher", because If you do any of those exercises as instructed, meaning as fast and explosive as you can, YOU WILL BE FINISHED.
I don't think it matters if a convict wrote the books or not. It's sad that writers and publishers feel the need to pretend to be a prisoner just to sell books and it's equally sad that readers feel convicts have some special magic and are tougher than the average person. Having said that, a person can garner a good deal of knowledge from these books on how to develop strength and build muscle without apparatus. Book publishing is simply a business and they're out to make money. They'll do whatever it takes to accomplish that. It's the reader's responsibility to find what, if anything, works best for them and leave the rest. I've read many fitness books and review them on Amazon. I find most pretty worthless or include lots of bad, even dangerous information and instruction. It's always buyer beware.
CC is clearly written by someone who has NOT followed the program in the book. even the pics are in accurate. feels like they used the prison thing as a marketing gimmick.
Thank You Johnny Grube for giving your insight into these books for $47 bucks i am glad you do a critique on these fitness books. Can you do a book critique on " pushing the limits" By Al kavadlo please?
I have to say that convict conditioning has been good to me so far. It may or may not be real prison fitness, I'm not an expert on the subject, but to me its still good information. Especially if your trying to get into shape you slowly build yourself up using the progressions in the book. I've only been steadily traing since May but I do see progress.
I dont get whats your problem, the author of convict conditioning never said, that the way he described his workout is how EVERYBODY trains in prison. It iis just his collection over the years in prison of what works best, and I can see no arguments against that. In the end it would not matter if he was or wasnt in prison, if his stuff actually works. So what are you really on about, and why so salty?
Tremendous video, I'm glad someone finally had the guts to say that the emperor isn't wearing any clothes (so to speak) when it comes to Convict Conditioning. It might have some nice little bodyweight progressions but it DOES NOT appear to have been written by a real prisoner because none of the jailbirds I know work out like that. And why is it that we don't ever see the actual Paul Wade in the book or in any of the Dragon Door DVDs? Keep preaching the truth brother.
The CC book is about Paul Wade teaching the concept of progressive calisthenics to the average people, that can be woman, weaklings, very sedentary persons to build their strength all the way up from the easiest to the hardest exercises. He never stated that prisoners work like that, using those easy exercises. That's just something to help ANYONE get to the point of very conditioning strength. If you've really read the book, on the part 1, he talks about how is the prison training, he even talks about how he started: did countless daily normal pushups for the first months, worked out almost every day, testing and doing all kinds of training methods and exercises he could learn about and etc. The progression method on the book is the way he found over the years, that is the best to help people builds their condition the most effective and faster way. He even stated that he learned a lot just for teaching other newcomers inmantes to become stronger on the most efficient way possible. The book is the compilation of all that he has learned trough his confinement to help people starts a calisthenics lifestyle. Not a documentary showing the exact way the average prisoner works out.
Thanks, I didn't know these books, apart from "Solitary fitness" and "convict conditioning". I don't know if you are going to answer me, your video has been published for a long time now. But I would like to know if your have some other books like these, or other books that you use for your training ?
Hi Johnny, I also have the CC book; and I couldn't agree with you more! There is no way in hell that this "Paul Wade" was ever in a prison. While I never did time myself, I have known and worked out with many that did; and as you point out, this book is so far removed from that reality, its a joke. However, if that helps to motivate someone to train harder, then to me its ok.
All those kettlebell stuff and the guy on his knees are variations and progressions, not necessarily used in prison. This book was, after all made for the average joe an not a prisoner. About the bridges, he said it isn't very common in prisons but it is an underrated and useful exercise especially for spinal health
Convict Conditioning is total bull shit. Dragon Door doing what it does best. Over hyping and over pricing to rip people off. I lost respect for a lot of people who didn't have the balls to speak up when that shit came out. Gained some respect for Steve Maxwell who did. Top books in this genre, that I know of, Hardcore Fitness and Felon Fitness. It's important to mention that Felon Fitness was written by a personal trainer and a lawyer. The lawyer got the workouts from a client of his that was in prison. So each chapter outlines the routine of someone actually in prison.
Johnny Grube convict conditioning is a good book with step to step instructions for getting better in bodyweight excersises. Paul was almost 20 years in prison and i think he has enough inside of the way the inmates train. On the other hand maybe there are no Prisoners doing push ups on the knees right but the book is bought by normal males and females that just want to get in shape and not in prison. And if you never did anykind of conditioning or if you are an older person maybe doing regular push ups is to hard. This book is just a product and the mysterie around convicts pulls a lot of attention to the topic of the workouts in the cells. Its just the way i see it. You buy the book to get in shape and not in prison
How people in prison train? The are not strength coaches or have any education on how the human body works!!! Look to qualified strength and conditioning coaches not criminals!!!

Understood.
solitary fitness is my bible

Thanks Johnny Grube!
It doesn't matter whether Paul Wade was in prison or not - the system works, period, and that's all that matters.

Clancy Ross check out Vegetable Police channel, he has been doing the cc system only.

Don't buy it

Does it matter if the author is fake? A push up is a push up, you can't fake it. Anyone who advocates getting fit and healthy can't be bad...

I should have watched this before making the comment about Solitary Fitness on your other video!

I know prisoners and prison guards and know how they trained, it's why I called bullshit on it.
