Your philosophical meanderings is one reason why I listen to your channel, Pete. We’re very lucky in life that we can continue to grow/ learn, no matter the age; I’ll be there to listen when you’re ready to share. Thanks Pete.

Pete, a real good way to set anyone up with ideas, and making them think about what they really want out of life, and how to think outside of the box to get it. My Dad and I had many discussions about what he thought I should do, and his approach on life was different, as our country has changed so much with innovation. He worked at the same business for almost 45 years, until his retirement in 1995. He believed that if you did a good job every day, the company would take care of you, but with the way the economy works today, that is no longer the case. The dod eat dog, buy up your competitors, and with that, get rid of the most expensive part of the business which is labor, you see why things have changed. Even the company my Dad worked for, had 750 employees at his factory, and now has about 175, running 3 shifts 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. At one point it almost closed as the economy was bad in 2008, and only a skeleton crew of 75 were working there. I am now 68 years old, and you gave great advice. Thanks for a great video. No matter what the content is, I always enjoy it.😊

If the government stayed out of your business say you could make more money? You hit the nail right on it's head. Saved our lifetime to retire at 50 years old. We did it, didn't inherited one penny. EVERY thing is paid for including beautiful house. Over a million in retirement savings, 88k a year in pentions every year. First 5 years we never touched our nest egg at all. Mann that's a great feeling Pete. Your wife and mind have to be on the same page. Your wife is a big asset. Your oldest always running from the camera. All your equipment is your assets you'll leave this world including your bright kids. You rock Pete. I don't care what the government does, just not crush our country. At 17 years old I joined the Marines and don't regret one second. Keep up the great work. Make this world a better place. The very best machine i ever had is the one i just bought for moving in tight spaces to clean and feed is a Toro Dingo 222 with a bucket on it. I paid $7500 for it used and it has a 22hp Kohler commander engine and i move dirt to planting areas, clean stalls and feed animals also with it. It turns in a 59 inch radius. That singular piece of equipment has kept me from modifying my out buildings.

Pete, there is a man and his family that have done the farmer's market in a town near me for years and years. That man, when I last saw him, was celebrating his 97th birthday at the market. His great great grandkids were helping PopPop out that day, but he still kept getting up from his stool to go to the trailer to pull out watermelons and muskmelons. He was such a delightful man, always great for a story and definitely someone that everyone looked for when they came to the market. Just thought I would relay that to you today, to let you know that you could forever be a part of the market, or as long as your health holds out.

Okay, I started watching this video on Saturday and finally got the time to finish it. I couldn't agree more with you on your thoughts regarding the long term outlook for the farm and your children's lives! I was fortunate in that my dad never expected me to take any part in the farm, instead he let me do what I wanted to do. When I turned 16, I started taking more interest in the farm, and by 20, I was really treating much of it like it was my own. When he passed, I was 23, and I knew I wanted to continue his legacy with the farm. Fast forward to today, I am now 33, and I now have my own son, and I'm ready to move on to pastures greener, figuratively and literally. I struggled with the idea of quitting the farm for the longest time, but I realized that my dad was an educated man who did many things in his life, and I think he would want me to do many things in mine, even if that meant selling the farm. I hope that we will never fully abandon agriculture, but I think it is time for us to move on, and I'm doing it for both myself, my wife, and my son, so we can all experience a new adventure as a family. Your thoughts regarding your kids really hits close to home there, and I think you're right. I got a good education to help propel me through life, and I hope that my son gets and education and then does whatever in the world he wants to do, regardless of my interests. And I hope that I can stay in the right mindset to give him those freedoms as he gets older. The farm has been great, and I'll never forget it, and we hope to do more farm stuff in the future, but life happens only once and I want my family to get the most out of it. Great thoughts as always, Pete. I appreciate what you do for us strangers out here.

Thank you for a very thoughtful video. One thing that caught my attention was when you said you would be hiring a contractor to do the work which a few years ago you would have done. I grew up on a hog and dairy farm in Iowa. We had some things that were handy, some that were not. My mother would always tell us “Work hard when you are young, because things are not so easy when you get older.” My own observation is as we age we get hurt easier and heal slower. The other thing is you want to leave time in your life to do the things you want to do. Travel, read, watch grandkids, volunteer work, etc. I take classes called Life Long Learning at our community college. A lot of courses taught by retired educators, others by current college teachers and many by people who have had life experiences that they want to share. What a pleasure it is to wrestle with a literature course with no papers to write or tests to take.

Watching this video has really helped me put the future of our ranch clear . You’re right, we don’t have control over our kids future. This was our dream not theirs . It was a battle for me until now ! I listen to your words and I’ve spent many hours viewing. I so respect what you say ! God bless you and your family . Thank you

I used to work on a 600 pig farm, and we had small sties holding 20-30 pigs each. We made false roofs about 3 1/2 feet high in each of their bedding areas. This kept them warm when they were sleeping, and the less calories they burned meant more weight gain for us. Best regards from N Wales..

Hey Pete just wanted to say I've been following your channel for a couple years now. Love all the videos you create. I look forward to hearing your views on life and how your always trying new things on the farm. And I'm especially greatful for the business videos you have done. Being from NY myself is been great to follow someone semi local. And you and your family have inspired us to start building our small farm into a business and start our own youtube channel! Thanks again look forward to the next one!

My day is better when I watch your channel.

Step A looks the hardest. Back in the early 50's I remember you could always tell the students who lived on farms because they were the one's who had manure on their boots.

I can’t imagine growing up or growing old in a place where you don’t or didn’t have options!! Your absoloutly right about that. Give your child your knowledge and trust they can make the best decision for themselves. Peace!!

My wife and I watch with great interest and admiration. We both had non-farming careers. But we have “inherited” the family farm. I’ve been around it my whole life but it’s all new to her.
We very much appreciate your eclectic subjects and approach to your farm.
Keep up the good work and the interesting videos.

Saw a Tamworth swine show about three years ago at the Indiana State Fair and I believe the young Tamworth boar you own could be competitive in the ring. He is impressive. I enjoy watching all your videos including restoring old tractors.

I'm watching your channel very closely now, because I can relate to what you're doing. I'm 61, looking at retirement and it gives me ideas where I'd like to be in a few years.

love the part about it's ok to not have it figured out. Wife and I just got 11 acres that was crop land. Converting to pasture , garden and homestead. I tell her we will figure it out as we go.

Hey Pete, I've watched your channel now for at least a year and subscribed again today. I value your opinion. We have a very similar view on this world we live in. I would be considered the epitome of life taking over in spite of my plans. Please realize that your positive attitude along with varying success on your farm are uplifting to your contemporaries of which I'm honored to consider myself. I had to change directions when I went into kidney failure. But watching you has reminded me that I've always been able to steer my own life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and life on the farm with us.

You address several things I had wondered about Pete. I've been "retired" almost six years. I left the stressful IT world behind and now do several water borne "gigs" most of which revolve around helping people and having fun. My retired years have been the best of my life. Have you considered a paid farm hand to give you a bit more freedom and the opportunity to still be engaged as you age (at the right time) but not solely responsible for the day to day of the farm? Providing modest housing could reduce costs and be a big draw to the right person or couple. Just a thought. Love your channel. All the best!
