I do this all the time (ducking the synths/pads, ducking the bass, ducking parts of the track with the vox), but I never thought to use it on an FX channel. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Super explanation. I have to admit that I thought I was hearing badly mastered dance songs on badly limited radio stations for quite a while, and I'm not convinced that's not where the idea came from! Like someone plugged a new bassed out CD into the board at the classical station, and pegged the bass eq and caused that gulping noise in the limiter, and everyone called in to ask what that was and can you do it again tomorrow... and then a producer caught wind of it and said he could make a CD sound like that... in fact he had been struggling to AVOID that for the last 20 years... sure!

On the last one regarding the delay, he used the delay send to trigger the compress - my question is, where did he put the compressor? Is it a plugin on the delay channel?
in the eg the comp was on the delay ch, but was being triggered by the dry vocal, or in this case super distorted vocal!

thanks you explained how that works really well. It's just that to a person who was a teenager during the 1980s, that sidechain compression, or pumping, effect sounds a lot like half the keyboards are running through a skidding tape deck. Not a good effect and it's unfathomable how it's so popular.
Man, that OKP is one of the simplest sidechain plugs I’ve seen!
I don't think it's side chain. It's the effect of side chaining, easily deployed in audio suite, but linked to the beat grid... so basically it pumps at pre-determined rhythm... not side chain... but a pseudo tremolo effect.

Nice plugin, but i would rather stick to R comp, I don't think that any other plugin would react on side chaining if i change the kick eq parameters, especially the low end.
I realize they released the one knob pumper for free a couple of weeks ago, but TAL industries has the TAL-Filter for free all the time I'm pretty sure. And You can do the exact same thing with it. I've been doing it that way for almost a year now, it's no different than actual side chaining really.

oneknob is not sidechaining though righT? just a preset tempo for the compression
+Ossian M Looks like it. Its a way to avoid a mute kick track which I find to be less messy.
I agree with Sebastian. OneKnobb Pumper looks like just a sidechain effect designed to just follow the tempo.
its a good way to avoid understanding..i was excited..it postponed me learning for another lifetime haha
it is a good effect though.Helps you to keep the daw clean and takes less RAM, but it doesn't let you control properly the effect (i.e. a kick that hits every 1/4 note and then changes to every 1/8). I guess the only way to achieve this with oneknobb pumper would be with automation, but in my opinion it's too much work compared to sidechaining it manually.

why not use a gate/expander for the delay? sounded still like a bit much delay on the last example.
Yes, but what would you be gating or expanding? You would be using it on the vocals, right? Buy in his mix his vocals are already mixed where he wants them, so it's the delay effect he wants to limit with the comp, and then swell back up when there are no vocals... I can't envision a way to do that with any kind of gate without re-mixing the vocals.

You can. You'll have to create either another audio or return track. Slap your sidechain plugin on the track through which the signal you want to duck passes. Set the audio in option on the new blank track to e.g. kick, and audio out to the track on which you have your plugin. Set the send on the kick track to 100%. Done.

I was a bit confused, because technically it is not side-chaining - the kick happens to be on every 1/4th but it's signal is never used. I would prefer calling this ducking,. because that is the heavy effect often used in pop. Sidechaining can also be used very subtle so one instrument leaves just a bit of room for the other when it is needed, in a blues track for instance.

This isn't sidechaining
Sidechaining is being used far too heavily over almost every instrument, on many songs produced recently, it's ruining music!
Less is more if it's across many instruments. Don't kid yourself it sounds cool, it's all about the song, not a wild pumping effect. I've lost count of songs produced with massive sidechaining, totally ruined.

I use it just to make kick and bass not overlap, so you cant even hear the pumping, I think thats a fair use :p
Yea. It's the overused effect for the 15 minutes we're currently occupying. And in about 5-10 years people will hear and ask WTF drugs we're they on? They engineered the songs to sound like you did a blackout hit of FREON... BUT WHY?? lol
