  • This video is dedicated to Ms Sayoko Yamaguchi, one of the most famous Japan's top international models. Sayoko was born in Yokohama, Kanagawa-prefecture to Japanese parents. Her mother was a dress-maker. As a little girl, Sayoko was her mother's fashion model. Whatever her mother created, she wore. Because her mother's design was so advanced, Sayoko often stood out at school and she was negatively famous for her unique fashion.
When Sayoko became a teenager, she attended a fashion design institute in Tokyo. She wanted to become a designer just like her mother. One day, at school there was a fashion show as part of a graduation project for upperclassmen. The upperclassmen needed a model for their clothes. Because Sayoko was tall (5.7) and pretty, they asked her to become their model. After the show, one of the judges from the fashion industry scouted her.
Sayoko was the first Asian and Japanese to be featured in the world's top fashion shows and magazines; she made her debut in Paris as a Paris Collection model in 1972. She became such a sensation around the world that major department stores used mannequin dolls just like Sayoko.
Sayoko went on to work in New York City, as well as other international cities like London, Milano, etc. Newsweek Magazine in the U.S. named Sayoko one of the world's top six fashion models in 1977 and began paying attention to Japanese beauty. The same year, Sayoko was featured on the cover of Steely Dan's Aja album, one of the big hit songs at the time.
Sayoko later expanded her career as a film and theater actress but her true love remained fashion. She designed many costumes for films. Sayoko suddenly passed on at age 57 by acute pneumonia and the world designers and film industry people mourned for her leaving.

She was the original model for the front cover of the Steely Dan album Aja. Looking back now, it almost seems like an embarrassingly Archie Bunker-esque thing to do. Was that supposed to be a not-so-clever play on an Asian name, taking a Japanese model and attempting to convince us that her name was really Asia spelled differently to make it convenient for a 'Murkin audience? Pathetic. Great music, gorgeous cover, stupid album title.
