  • This video introduces u to Madame & Sir. Masataka ("Massan") Taketsuru. Massan was the founder and CEO of Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd., which was founded on 2 July 1934. Since then, the company grew and today it is one of the most successful companies in the world... run by Kotaro, Rita’s and Massan’s grandson.
Massan met Rita while he was studying Chemistry at the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1918. He just so happened to be taking the same Organic Chemistry course with Ella, Rita’s younger sister. At that time, Ella was following her father’s footsteps to become a medical doctor, which she eventually did. Organic as well as Applied Chemistry courses were and still are requirements for medical students. Massan wasn’t a medical student but his coming from a long line of "Sake" brewery family in J since 1733, it was his duty and obligation to follow his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps to head the family business. Massan fortunately did enjoy learning about Chemistry and did very well. He also loved Scotland very much.
However, when Rita and Massan announced their engagement, neither of their families nor friends blessed them. Both of their families clearly and strongly opposed their union. As one can see from this video, their sad faces on their supposedly one of the happiest time in one's life. And yet, they went ahead with the plan to get married and they had their honeymoon in the U.S.A., starting from New York City.
Back in J in the late 1920, Rita and Massan had a J-style wedding as well; this time they were blessed by Massan’s family. Rita and Massan couldn’t have any child and so, they adopted a beautiful baby boy, Takashi, who was Massan's sister's son. Rita loved him very much as her own child.
Takashi was a bright child and made his parents very proud. Eventually, he inherited his father’s business, Nikka, and successfully continue to grow the company. Today, Nikka is led by Takashi’s son, Kotaro, Rita’s and Massan’s grandson.
In time Massan’s family came to love Rita as their own daughter and so did Rita’s family of Massan. “Nikka” was really like Rita’s and Massan’s baby; they were growing the company together and determined to make it no matter what… like when they exchange the vow to get married. Massan founded Nikka without his family’s financial assistance. His family was after all one of the wealthy families in J; however, he wanted to make it alone with Rita.
Today, there is no one who doesn’t know Nikka Whisky in J or many other countries; Nikka’s products have received numerous awards from all over the world. Rita's and Massan's baby has matured now and still growing.
Rita became a J-citizen when she got married to Massan. In 1960, she became seriously ill and Massan and their son suggested that perhaps she should go back to Scotland. But, she refused to go back and instead she told them that she was Japanese and that she would like to stay in Yoichi... her adapted hometown.
Enjoy the video and please don’t forget to give a big thumbs up.
My videos are sort of related to each other so enjoy others as well. Peace out… to all the beautiful souls out there. Cheers… ; D
