Hi there, I go for one tomorrow so nervous and anxious but I also suffer from anxiety sadly so this is normal for me haha. What sucks is my heart beta meds I take every 12 hours so I have to take it now actually just took it 15 minutes ago will probably only get 7 hours sleep then my endoscopy is at 10:45am I have had an esophagial ecocardiogram in 1998 I was a teenager for a little hold in my heart that nearly sealed now I just get an eco every few years to make sure, but that test was longer like 45 mins to an hour. Endoscopies from what I'm told takes 15 to 20 mins it's a fast test apparently? So thats good....The thing that worries me is aside from the results the anesthetic I had back in the 90's was sodium penathal which made me nauseous and feel tingly in a weird way before I was knocked out, the stuff now I hear is much, much, much better and you don't even feel any of that I'm told. Was hoping you could describe it? They told me for that other test as a kid to count down from 10 I think or 100 I forget either way I was out after just a few I think. I hear the nurses and anesthesiologist will calm you and assure you. As a kid I had no anxiety, but past 15 since I've had anxiety disorder every test be it a basic test for a job or medical procedure makes me anxious sadly.....so this was appreciated. I hear the setting up, filling out paper work etc takes longer than the test itself. I worry because since this is newer stuff than what I had in the 90's I'm like what if I'm allergic to it, what if they have trouble waking me up etc, etc all these scenarios going through my head. My mom had an endoscopy and colonoscopy recently said it was nothing, my friend had one as well said endoscopies are nothing you're out within an hour or so once you're out and waking up in no time.
I would imagine that the people that have already posted here will not see my comment. However, I just wanted to thank all of you who had such encouraging words of reassurance to share! I have been so scared for this procedure for months and have been avoiding thinking about itbecause of the panic I get from it. Thank you for helping to set my mind at ease, and making me feel more comfortable with the procedure.
I had an endoscopy done today, with throat spray, Fentanyl and an intravenous sedative. I was dreading it for weeks, but I wanted to come on here and reassure anyone looking at this, who's worrying about it. It took literally minutes and, although not the most pleasant experience, it wasn't as horrifying as I had imagined. I gagged quite a bit and I didn't have the dreamlike experience other people talk about. I remember everything and didn't feel woozy or high. In fact, I only felt a bit tired really, having the sedative, as I was awake and fully aware throughout. My advice would be to have everything they offer you: throat spray, painkiller and definitely sedative.
I had my endoscopy today it was a I was on anesthesia. It was the best sleep I ever had. I don’t have a ulcer or nothing so I’m good but I just wanted to encourage everyone doing this that it’s going to be okay 👌 #maythe4thbewithyou
I had an endoscopy done today without sedation. Only the numbing spray, sprayed to the throat. Honestly it’s not as terrifying as most people say it is. I guess it also depends on the doctor who’s doing it cuz mine went pretty well. I swallowed the tube once and during the process I gagged 3 times but it wasn’t ugly or frightening. The tube feels weird in the oesophagus and stomach. I kept breathing in and out deeper everytime I felt even the slightest discomfort. My eyes were tearing up. But it was all over in less than 2 minutes. It’s your natural reflex to want the tube out of you as soon as possible so you would feel a little anxious while it’s inside. You only FEEL like you can’t breathe but you CAN. It’s all in your head. Just concentrate on your breathing. I flipped reading all the horrifying comments of people who did it without sedation but trust me, it’s NOTHING like what they say. Mostly depends on the doctor who does it I guess. And I was fortunate enough to have a skilled doctor.
Totally agree , once it gone down your throat it's just uncomfortable and a bit strange , not painful , just keep breathing normally , I just had the spray .
I had the throat spray and sedation today. If anyone has anxiety or is worried take the sedation, you won’t remember anything and will wake up in recovery. The throat spray feels like you can’t breath at first but that’s just because it’s numb, you can breath as normal. The only thing I have now is a sore throat when swallowing, I was so worried for nothing.
How do u feel now ? I’m getting one next month n having high anxiety! I’m scared of the anesthesia whaf if I don’t wake up ? How long do u feel drowsy after wards
@@griselgarcia3677 honestly I was so scared I felt like cancelling, but it was so easy. You don’t actually be asleep just sedated so you are still awake the whole time just unaware, you don’t remember anything about it. I was in the recovery room after for about an hour , had tea and toast and got to go home, I only felt drowsy for the first 5 minutes of recovery then it completely wears off. Hope this helps you.
I’m having mine tomorrow I can’t breathe with nerves 😟 I can’t have the sedation due to being allergic I’m absolutely worried sick just hoping that there’s nothing wrong with me & that I’ll never have to get this done again
I had this procedure February this year! It was honestly a nice experience. Throat spray and sedation, I kinda woke up and I notice I had a tube in my mouth and fell asleep again! I fell asleep for 2 hours! I was so comfortable when I woke up.
for those worried about having a colonoscopy, dont be.i had one yesterday and fretted for two weeks about having it done and that was a complete waste of time .the whole thing took 40 min during which time I felt nothing at all and I mean nothing from start to finish ,from the insertion of the camera to its removal was totally free of any kind of discomfort.i took movi prep the night and morning before and while it does make you go to the toilet a lot,so be prepared for a interrupted sleep and stay close to your toilet, your poo will become very watery and your bum gets a bit sore and that's it.i can not stress too much how easy my colonoscopy was so I hope this is a help for someone who might be apprehensive.
i had an endoscopy earlier today, good experience I was nervous which is normal. GI is a really nice team, they were all comforting and nice, I got sedation and felt absolutely nothing, I was nice and calm, probably asleep and I can’t remember anything from the procedure besides waking up for a second or two but still comfortable and fell back to sleep, no need to worry! You’re in and out of there, the procedure only lasts a few minutes! Feel free to ask questions I’d love to help you out!
I’ve got to have one on Monday morning, I’m so nervous as my gag reflex is terrible, I hope they put me under, It sounds pretty straight forward but scary at the same time, Do they tell you before you leave if they found anything wrong? Curious xx
@@Unique205 I hope everything goes good for you! Yes they can tell you what they saw immediately after, that was the case with myself, thank God everything was fine with me! But they also do a biopsy, which for me, took 3 days to get the results back!
Thanks 🙏🏻 Well they sedated me and I was out! I don’t remember anything, nothing to it, however they did find multiple ulcers, did a biopsy, I had a ct scan the next day, and I’ve got to have another endoscopy.
I had this done today! (May 18-2022)Was so anxious 😰 then I watched this and made me feel better about it, the nurses and drs at my local hospital where so nice and accommodating also so that also helped lol anxiety is fun.. but in all honesty it wasn't so bad! Over in about 10-20 min. All good In my innards!
Sadly in my country they dont do anesthesia, mom said that it actually hurts, im having this hunger sensation in my stomach and it sucks and im so scared to even do a blood test 🥲
I panicked a lot about mine for a while, but i have to say its really not too bad! The throat spray they gave worked incredibly quickly and i did it awake and while it felt a little strange it was not even that bad. The team that did it were lovely and it was incredibly fast to have the procedure. It took about 45 minutes in and out in total, and while mine wasn't at Leeds im sure they do a great job too!
Having one in two weeks choosing to have sedation. I have had countless surgery before and a stoma for life but it’s not a scary procedure just better to take the sedation makes you feel sleepy and comfortable. 29 already had 10 surgeries and every scopy going. To anyone having one don’t worry you’ll be fine. In my advice if you’re able to take the sedation as it relaxes you and you won’t remember it too much and makes you more comfortable. Looks worse than it is but don’t worry you’ll be fine you’ve got this kings and queens 😎
After watching the horror videos I was petrified, but chose no sedation, just the spray. . It was completely painless, swallowing once for the probe to go down was totally easy, I didn’t even feel it going down , I had no desire to gag , only 3 minutes of calm breathing passed quickly. The only issue was the air they’d pumped into my abdomen, which I barely felt at the time. After the procedure I had bloated uncomfortable gassy feeling which gradually decreased with a lot passing wind and walking it off. The numbing effect spray too eased up within 15 minutes and at no time did it prevent me from swallowing or caused a sore throat . All in all, I’d say 3 minutes of the mildest of discomfort are not worth being zonked out with sedation for hours .
You don’t know peoples medical history let alone it’s current state. Medication isn’t just for nerves but comfort- if they do come upon a painful area (which shouldn’t hurt ofc) at least patient can stay calm and communicate that instead of reacting or fight or flight reflexes taking over.
I had a endoscopy without any sedation and just the throat spray. Thought I would give it a try and the doctor said I could have the sedation if no good. Just to reassure everyone it was easy and the pain. No gagging. Nothing. The hardest part was pulling the plaster off after my blood test. Just go for it. You won’t regret it.
I've had five up to now all with just the throat spray....I wouldn't say it was easy. I have a hiatus hernia so the gas they use to inflate the stomach kept escaping .....I was wretching for England. It isn't really that painful just uncomfortable, the trick is to focus on your breathing, mind you I was glad when it came out tho...😳 Try the colonoscopy.....I've had four of those and one sigmoidoscopy....you need sedation for colonoscopy.....😭
Stop telling people that, your a fool for doing it like that and no one should try this, he’s either lying or is a wack job, get anesthesia so you go to sleep and don’t have any problems, what a fool
@@johnh.9127 He's not a fool. Some of us arent allowed to have anaesthetic for medical reasons. I have heart failure and muscular dystrophy and they say it's too dangerous to have sedation. Sedation makes colonoscopy easy. I had one before my heart failure and I was asleep. I had endoscopy without anaesthetic and it was veru uncomfortable. Now I have to have another so I am looking for ways to stay calm and cope with it easily. My consultant assures me it will be fine. What helped me last time was when a nurse held my hand.
City Of Figs They should. In Australia there is no cost other than $200 for the use of the day hospital. The doctor and the anesthetist was no cost from memory.
I had an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy last week, had the throat spray. But managed without sedation or gas and air for the Colonoscopy. The Colonoscopy was a little uncomfortable in places especially when the camera went "round the corners" as I called it. Just try your best to keep relaxed as possible make the muscles in your tummy neck and shoulders loose it does help, and slow soft breathes. I was able to lay there and talk to everyone looking after me. For me the worst was the Endoscopy and the moviprep drink, everyone is different though and what is painful for one might not be for another. My results were all clear.
I had one on November 23rd. It is a walk in the park. FAR less difficult than a colonoscopy(which involve. s some nasty tasting prep fluids and medications with side effects)
Anyone offered sedation for an endoscopy, please take this option. I had midazolam just before my procedure. Along with fentanyl and the anesthetic spray . It was amazing I wasn't aware of the tube going in, no gagging . Very very relaxed , my mood was great . I was so anxious in the days beforehand . Please discuss sedation prior. But you must get a person to pick you up . .
You know, you people who get anesthesia or even sedation are so lucky where I live in the uk the staff do their utmost to not allow a sedation , I'm jealous.
I’m from the UK and I had this!! I’m an extremely nervous person like I’ll cry and everything, I was even crying in the room 😂 I had throat spray and sedation and honestly it wasn’t even that bad. Literally could not feel a thing, please don’t be scared bc I promise it’s not as bad as you think and that’s coming from someone who cried and screamed whilst they took my blood pressure 💀
You sound like me so reading this is reassuring 😅 I'm the biggest baby going when it comes to anything mouth and stomach related. I've a deep seated fear of being sick so going for this is truly messing with my head. Ideally I'll get knocked out not a chance I'm doing this awake. Thanks so much for reassuring comment
@@missstormchaser1 I’m exactly the same! I cry at the dentist it’s so embarrassing my dentist is like “it’s okay I’m just looking this is only a mirror” 🤣🤣 but honestly the endoscopy wasn’t an issue. Are you from the UK? They won’t put you to sleep (that’s why I was super worried) but they do give sedation, you do know what’s going on but it’s like your mind isn’t even there. It felt like 10 seconds and it was over 🤣 I had a colonoscopy too which was probably more tough than the endoscopy but there’s honestly nothing to worry about, I was shocked at how easy it was 😂 what’s your endoscopy for if you don’t mind me asking? X
@@christineclarkemyuniquenes7792 I promise you it’ll be okay!! Whilst they were doing it i barely noticed, when they finished I asked “when are you gonna start” I know it’s tough but i promise it’s more scary than it actually seems xx
Today I had colonoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopy. The worst part is the day before the check up. A solution for emptying the colon is used, I used prepawest and it tasted so bad that I nearly threw up, it gave me diarrhea and abdominal pain but at the end I felt so good and empty. Before the check up I got a sedation that made me sleep in 5 seconds and I woke up after 30 minutes(for me it was couple of seconds), I felt nothing: during or after the check-up(some gasses after the examination that went away after going to the bathroom) and I was high for 3 minutes then I became in a very good mood. My results were all good. I advice anyone to do it to feel safe and detect any problems early(I hope you don't have any). I had the examination in egypt. God bless you all❤️
I had one done with only throat spray which I don't think worked. I felt everything . I gagged and threw up a lot of stomach acid. Not the best experience but doesn't kill you . Would go back for another if I had to .
Had one of these today and there really isn’t anything to worry about . I was in there for about 5 minutes and had sedation and throat spray. The only discomfort I felt was the gag reflex a couple of time mainly when they first put it in and when they took biopsies in my Esophagus.
@@scottbarrass435 it was good 😊 although my throat wasn’t so good and I found out I’m gluten and dairy free so I’ve been on a diet and so far so good 👍
Had my Endoscopy performed today with numbing throat spray. The only thing I can say is that you can 100% feel it and it’s 100% uncomfortable I couldn’t wait for it to be over. But it is not painful. It’s just unpleasant. But it’s over with quicker than a song on the radio
I just got it and a bit loopy watched this the night before dont get mad at me if you cant understand but i loved it i had amazing nurses and doctors and i feel amazing after my mouth tastes like balloons though
I had an endoscopy procedure about 10 years ago but it failed cos I have a high gag reflex. When they sedated me and put in mouth guard I gagged so much they had to stop. Without even putting the camera down. I even gag when I clean my teeth. I am due a endoscopy next month but I’m so anxious about it cos of my gag reflex I’m hoping they can put me under a general antiseptic
I have one next month I'm scared I been having trouble sleeping cause. I feel like I'm choking and I can't breathe idk if it's my anxiety or nerves but having this procedure next month, I feel like I'm going to choke or have a mini attack
@@gabbyerin8770 just ask for a sedative, they pump air into your stomach so the tubes are big enough for the camera. That way you only burp and hip abit but honest I'd have another done tomorrow it was totally fine!
I had endoscopy today: the normal human reflex is for the tube to be out as soon as possible. But it all went smoothly, and I am here typing this in less than 20 minutes.
@@alexajones2331 don't be stressed out, you will feel nothing! The sedation will work instantly (10 - 15 secs) for me and I went to deep sleep throughout the procedure. Suddenly I wake up in the recovery room and it was done. Good luck! you can do it! stay healthy
Am seated waiting my turn, I early walked off the bed and said I needed time to think ...I looked at the tube and said hell NO! Okey let me prep again will explain my experience later
Question: Can you get sedated if you have a really bad gag reflex and you barely stand the dentist ? I can t imagine how much I will suffer doing this endoscopy being 100% aware. I am doing this in 2 months time at NHS hospital.
I had mine done yesterday in Germany. I was scared in the beginning and wanted to cancel the appointment in the morning. I actually wanted to be sedated but the Dr advised otherwise. The whole process only took about 5 minutes a bit uncomfortable once camera is being pushed down but trust me you don't feel any pain. Stay calm and good luck.
So wait Just to clear things up .. you CAN get an endoscopy with NO sedation?? Because I believe I might have throat cancer but I am wayy more scared to get put to sleep than anything els.. if I know I can stay awake i will go way sooner and stress free
I am scared even for the thought that I can’t breath.. I had panic attacks because of this.. I’m reading the comments now.. does it really happen? The feeling you can’t breath due to numbing of throat spray? 😢

I had endoscopy today and was awful - only had throat spray wish I’d chosen sedation. I can take anything, have had 5 children but would gladly go through childbirth 5 more times than this endoscopy procedure.
I had this done about 11 hours ago from writing this. it's okay they're there to help you. if you really fear this you could get the sedative, I got the throat spray and gagged a few times but it was over in two mins max. for those worried about having a colonoscopy, dont be.i had one yesterday and fretted for two weeks about having it done and that was a complete waste of time .the whole thing took 40 min during which time I felt nothing at all and I mean nothing from start to finish ,from the insertion of the camera to its removal was totally free of any kind of discomfort.i took movi prep the night and morning before and while it does make you go to the toilet a lot,so be prepared for a interrupted sleep and stay close to your toilet, your poo will become very watery and your bum gets a bit sore and that's it.i can not stress too much how easy my colonoscopy was so I hope this is a help for someone who might be apprehensive.
Thanks buddy, I’m going in 6 days from now and your post really comforted me.
I’m going in 4 days.
This makes me feel a lot more better.
i had an endoscopy earlier today, good experience I was nervous which is normal.
I’ve got to have one on Monday morning, I’m so nervous as my gag reflex is terrible, I hope they put me under,
It sounds pretty straight forward but scary at the same time,
Do they tell you before you leave if they found anything wrong? Curious xx
@@Unique205 I hope everything goes good for you! Yes they can tell you what they saw immediately after, that was the case with myself, thank God everything was fine with me! But they also do a biopsy, which for me, took 3 days to get the results back!
We’re you able to swallow normal and feel great even tho you had a sore throat?
Thanks 🙏🏻
Well they sedated me and I was out! I don’t remember anything, nothing to it, however they did find multiple ulcers, did a biopsy, I had a ct scan the next day, and I’ve got to have another endoscopy.
@@bresfoodforthoughts.5409 I didn’t have a sore throat or anything after.
We’re you able to swallow again and feel good ??
DR ALEX MCLAREN
My nurse was a mean hillbilly
I panicked a lot about mine for a while, but i have to say its really not too bad! The throat spray they gave worked incredibly quickly and i did it awake and while it felt a little strange it was not even that bad. The team that did it were lovely and it was incredibly fast to have the procedure. It took about 45 minutes in and out in total, and while mine wasn't at Leeds im sure they do a great job too!
I have one on Wednesday 12/28/2022 and honestly, I am so terrified. Reading some of your comments have helped.
How are you feeling now
Having one in two weeks choosing to have sedation.
That was really informative and helpful. Now I am set to go for the same. Thanks you
I had a endoscopy without any sedation and just the throat spray. Thought I would give it a try and the doctor said I could have the sedation if no good. Just to reassure everyone it was easy and the pain. No gagging. Nothing. The hardest part was pulling the plaster off after my blood test. Just go for it. You won’t regret it.
Bull. Shit.
@@peterpeter3536 obviously that would be an exception, not the rule
Going under anaesthetic is awesome. A very peaceful sleep 😴
Should be patient preference, it’s not up the them how you go though a stressful procedure.
there is no way i'm doing such a procedure without sedation
Omg....I get so nervous I've gotta to have this in 2 day's time, I'm freaking out already 😢
I had an endoscopy on my esophagus today and since i am a minor I had a different journey but this is pretty much what happens.

Had my Endoscopy performed today with numbing throat spray. The only thing I can say is that you can 100% feel it and it’s 100% uncomfortable I couldn’t wait for it to be over. But it is not painful. It’s just unpleasant. But it’s over with quicker than a song on the radio

How was it?
I just got it and a bit loopy watched this the night before dont get mad at me if you cant understand but i loved it i had amazing nurses and doctors and i feel amazing after my mouth tastes like balloons though
Did you have sedative or anaesthetic?
The only fake thing about this video is the smile he has on his face the whole time, knowing what's about to go up the other end LMAO

Can this be done while under having hernia surgery?
