    Had my 200 series tuned last week with a fairly low key towing tune, made 185kw and 650nm at the wheels running 33s. Very happy with UDT.

      v8 greg I’m about to book my 200 in for the etc remap, soot clean and catch can installation. Still haven’t decided about the engine remap, is there a noticeable difference when towing and economy with the remap? If I go the remap all up I’m in the vicinity 5.5k so I have to choose carefully.

    I had my 200 series remapped a couple of months ago and the results were pretty similar to Shauno's tune. The 93% increase in torque, especially on the low rev range, and a more immediate throttle response is the one I'm after. It's a better drive on and off-road.

    The key to 'Tuning' is so simple:
    1.Blind the client with science
    2.Clean out the engine intake - this takes time and makes the client think you know your stuff!
    3.Faff about with lots of computers, this is very important to justify a huge bill.
    4.When the client goes out for a bacon sarnie, quickly remove a few gallons of fuel and replace with high octane aviation fuel.
    5.Demonstrate the new huge power gains on the dyno!
    6.Get the bill paid and watch another happy client drive off with his extra performance........

    My understanding of NCOP suggests that any vehicle which produces >20% increase in Power and Torque, over the factory specifications, needs to be Blue Plated in Qld. Is the cost of Blue Plating included in the Custom Tune when they exceed 20% increase in Power & Torque? Or does everyone just turn a blind eye to the fact that they are now potentially driving a vehicle that is no longer insured, because it's 'technically' not Roadworthy?

  • @tareskisloki8579
    @tareskisloki8579 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I've always wondered, when they're dyno tuning a vehicle with a snorkel, how much difference it would make if they had road speed air going over the snorkel head?. Having the ram-air effect from a proper snorkel, or drawing from the low pressure turbulence behind a backward stainless one.

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Almost no measurable difference in a standard setup, unless you've heavily modified the filter & found a straight path to the inlet.

      @tareskisloki8579 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gaj5701 I've heard that said a lot, but I'd be really interested to see it demonstrated, unfortunately dyno shops generally don't have a second fan they can task to blow at the snorkel, so nobody does it.

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tareskisloki8579 I'm an automotive design engineer & the whole intake system on a production vehicle is designed to operate consistently in almost any situation. Think about the diffusion & restriction of increased intake pressure through the bends in pipes, various diameters of pipework, filter box, any damping chambers, the turbo, intercooler, split in the manifold & you have virtually no perceptible increase in pressure left. Ram air systems are designed around that specific principle to be effective, however all we do is modify the initial intake of an existing system which is designed for consistency so it has no real effect.

    Nothing is for free. If It was more economical and you got more power, the factory would have done it. Again, you don't get ANYTHING for free.
    By the pure nature of it, the longevity of the motor will be decreased and the carbon output will be greater. Without any internal mods, it's impossible to avoid.

    • @rossprivate5456
      @rossprivate5456 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @jonstarritt848
      @jonstarritt848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You should research what people are doing with VW TDI engines, specifically the ALH. They are getting more power and fuel mileage with simple upgrades and tuning. And nobody said anything was free, someone has to pay to get the truck tuned. The carbon output will only increase with a bad tune. If tuned properly the carbon output will stay the same or decrease due to the air/fuel ratio being tuned for the engine and not just an off the shelf factory tune. Also, a catch can will keep any carbon out of the intake, why don't vehicles have catch cans from the factory? Vehicle manufacturers want you to buy more expensive vehicles if you want more power, hence why they undertune almost every vehicle they sell. As far as internal mods, have you seen what the stock bottom end of a 2JZGTE can handle? Your comments are naive and ignorant.

    • @Nico-wp6jq
      @Nico-wp6jq 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not just the motor, no point having insane power at the flywheel if you have broken diffs, CVs, trannys. The whole drive train needs to be modified to support the doubling of torque. I doubt Toyota would have engineered this to support double the torque the stock motor could have handled. If you go ahead and upgrade everything up to the rims, then yeah, go for it. But would have been good to point out upgrades don't stop at the motor.

    • @wagypsy
      @wagypsy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Ultimate Diesel Tuning i wonder why then, and its not a crack at all, I'm genuinely interested, why then do Toyota not make the best possible product they can? Why do they "de-tune" for reliability purposes? Surely, if you then re-tune, it will reduce that original reliability? So instead of 50 years, it may be expected that you only get sat 40 years... Not something most would care about. But DOUBLING the torque NEVER comes at no price. And I'm not taking $$$ for those confused.
      If i double the torque, I double the stress that any given level of torque is producing. I'm not saying it's not sustainable, I'm simply saying it's not deniable. And what is the result of that extra stress? That's my only queery.

    • @geordiegibson1210
      @geordiegibson1210 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wagypsyif you think of it this way, there are far too many variables for a manufacturer to "tune" every vehicle. Altitude and air density for example will make a big difference. Manufacturer may be based at or around sea level and knows he has to hit certain criteria, e.g. hp level, emissions etc. However, he doesn't know if the vehicle is going to be exported to central America and be at an average of 2,000 feet above sea level, which changes his whole tune characteristics. So, rather than write a thousand different tunes for the same vehicle, based on where in the world they are shipped, they aim for the target hp, torque and emissions figures. And there will always be some safety factors in there as well, because the manufacturer won't be able to control the maintenance of the vehicle.
      Proper tuning of the vehicle to suit local conditions will always unlock more power and, if done right, also increase fuel economy, as the engine is basically being optimized for the local conditions and environment. And the majority of people that will get a professional tune done are the ones that are most likely to do proactive maintenance on their vehicles, which will usually increase the lifespan over and above the anticipated.

    Every tuners favorite word CUSTOM tune. A safe tune doesn’t need to be custom tune. From factory they all have the same map loaded into ecu. Yes live tuning might get a few kilowatts but nothing wrong with a generic map.

    Damn this vid got me thinking about the tuning again. One thi g I did mis in this video is what budget are we talking about. Okay I'm based in Europe so I know there will be a difference but would be nice to have an idea. Also how do you find the right tuner. I'm driving a Prado 120 and I hear often that Toyota have build in a lot of security to prevent people tweaking their car. Damn I wish I could have a go at Shaun's ride. Looks so great

    More power = more fuel. No two ways about it, sorry! Increasing torque does NOT reduce fuel economy in the real world, where modern engines have plenty of torque to pull any gear anyway, so the benefits from downspeeding are not practically realisable.
    The way you CAN improve economy at a fixed power level on an aftermarket diesel tune is to run leaner (Exhaust NOx goes through the roof, hence the OEs can't do this), reduce the EGR ratio (NOx issue again) or to run with a more advanced injection angle (burn the charge at a lower chamber volume) and put up with the increased combustion noise and peak pressure (OEs are mind full of the engines high cycle fatigue limits and have NVH (cabin and exterior) targets to meet.

      This has to be the most intelligent comment on here! I'm a Toyota tech and this information is correct! I own a 79 series and i will NOT be touching the perfect factory tune! Millions of dollars is spent on tuning these bulletproof engines in Japan to last a long time reliably. You absolutely cannot kill these engines in standard form. Unless you neglect them in a servicing aspect (oil, filters, etc). And in that situation that's your fault, not the manufacturer's. Great comment mate!

      @Ultimate Diesel Tuning As the road load of the vehicle is unchanged (mass + aero drag + rolling drag) for any given speed the road load will be fixed, and hence the power requirement at the wheels is also fixed (power = vehicle speed x tractive effort). So for Shauno to drive at any given speed takes exactly the same wheel power as it did before the remap. Now the engine is of course linked to the wheels via the gearbox, so Shauno can change the engine speed for any given road speed by changing gear, but power always equals speed x torque, so change up, the engine speed drops due to the higher gear, and the engine must make more torque to keep the same power. For example, say sitting in 3rd gear the engine is doing 4000 rpm, and making 100Nm, that's a power output of 41.9kW. Change up, and let engine speed drop to 2000rpm, and for the same 41.9kW, the engine must now output 200Nm
      That is simply a result of the laws of physics and cannot be changed! What CAN be changed is the engines efficiency in turning fuel into useful work, either by increasing the thermal efficiency (capturing more heat from the burning fuel) or reducing frictional and parasitic losses (ie wasting less of the energy released from the fuel) Downspeeding (running the engine at the lowest possible rotational speed, ie the highest gear) does indeed save (a small amount) of fuel, because it minimised engine frictional losses, but, those losses are only really important at low loads (FMEP would typically be in the order of 5 to 10 kW), so the only fuel saving possible comes when the engine is already at maximum torque and therefore you cannot change up and maintain the same vehicle speed. But at maximum torque, you are miles away from "peak economy" so if you want to save fuel, just slow down (reduce your vehicle speed) a bit, and you'll get a massive fuel saving compared to the couple of percent that even aggressive diwnspeeding can deliver. Particularly as aero drag is proportional to the cube of speed, so small reductions in average speed bring large power requirement reductions, and hence large economy benefits. And if Shauno is accelerating harder, then hsi average speed will be higher, and hence the average drag is higher, and hence he'll be using more fuel to drive the same distance.
      It's also worth noting that with modern engines, where the driver demand is scaled to a torque demand by the engine management, the position of the drivers foot is, broadly, irrelevant. Simply by remapping the pedal map, you can make a vehicle feel to the driver like they have to accelerate less to get the same speed, but the engine operation is actually unchanged.
      As i mentoned before however, freed from the (oneous) requirements of certification and legislation, it IS possible to get a production enigne to make more power via a higher overall thermal efficiency leveraging a fixed fuel mass, using the measures i highlighted in my previous comment (EGR/Injection angle/Pmax) but those measures were not taken by the OE for good reason (like for example, passing emissons legislation, something your new remap would not do)

      Max Torque what dribble are you talking. I myself have my vehicle tuned, it isn’t a 79 series but the point being made here is fuel economy. Now I don’t give a dam about all your facts and figures I myself can confidently say that when I drive my vehicle sensibly I get better economy. I drive the same way to work every day with the same weight give or take way + or - 50l of fuel so my figures are pretty dam accurate.
      So for me and I recon a lot of other people would agree if driven sensibly you will be better economy, it’s simple. Even though you are making more power and more torque, you are using less power and less torque to get to speed and to maintain speed.
      I will also add, if I drive like an idiot it will also chew through the fuel faster then the “so called brilliant” factory tune.
      So I respect your comment but kindly I disagree. 👍🏻
      Day to day driving for the majority of people would see an improvement.

      @maxtorque2277 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bloodyterrific you say.
      1) you "don’t give a dam all your facts and figures"
      2) "you are making more power and more torque, you are using less power and less torque"
      I for reference have 30 years of powertrain calibration experience with the major OEMs including toyota, ford, aston martin bentley, GM, BMW, and have been part of the team that has developed F1, LeMans, and WTC winning race engines. When i measure fuel economy i use a state-of-the-art facility, that cost £100M to precisely and repeatibly determine all the metrics for any given vehicle.
      Now i get it, people who've spent money on a remap want to believe that somehow there new map can give both more power and ore econonmy at the same time, but i'm sorry, mostly it can't. I say mostly because as mentioned there are specific mapping points where the thermal efficiency of the engine can be improved beyond the OE settings due to a lack of constraints for aftermarket post registration remaps, but those points are no where near the loads sites at which you would drive if you actually had max economy in mind.
      You say "my figures are pretty dam accurate" what are you using to measure those figures? To get an accurate figure you need an independantly (and traceable/calibrated) fuel flow measurement and vehicle distance measure. The gauges on your dash, or the read out on the garage fuel pump are no way near good enough.
      BTW, i am in no way knocking UDT's work, i just think that it's good to have some realism in such complex subjects for the good of everyone

    • @maxtorque2277
      @maxtorque2277 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ultimate Diesel Tuning How does "soot" result in an engine that uses less fuel? (Hint, soot is actually an insulator, so a sooty engine will generally use less fuel because the overall thermal gradient is higher to ambient......)
      BTW, i'm sure your customers do use less fuel after the remap, but only because they are subconciously driving slower /more carefully. It's call the placebo effect and it's very real, especially in cases where people have spent money to achieve something but they have no objective measure of the success of that measure.

    Getting better fuel economy from your foot is great . But does it improve the overall economy of the engine.
