Hello everyone! I just uploaded a new video analyzing the newest Hololive chess game between GM Gawr Gura and GM Amelia Watson, be sure to check that one out! th-cam.com/video/8KONOhs4zRk/w-d-xo.html
Why torture yourself in such a manner? Edit: after finally seeing the chess match, I can only say that if Murphy’s Law was a chess match, it’d be this.
Yup. There are even rare situations where refusing a promotion (keeping your pawn as a pawn) can make an otherwise guaranteed loss into a draw, though those situations are extremely rare and pretty much don't happen in practice.
@@danielyuan9862 kind of, yes. an update to the rules of chess is effectively an update to chess. in this case, someone found a “bug” in the rules and tried to exploit it, so the devs on the most official-looking “server” (i.e. FIDE) patched it out
"Kiara is 3 queens ahead." Hah, she possibly can't lose that, right? Oh, wait... What do you mean she doesn't know all the rules? Oh no no no! I've only played chess for a day in school in a special week, but I have to say this match was the most entertaining match of chess I've ever seen. Brilliance and Brutality combined into an one hour match! Looking back at the match through the eyes of someone who actually knows chess, reminded me of some moves I did as well and now I know why they were suboptimal. Thank you!
What I love about this game is how the probability meter indicating who has the advantage CONSTANTLY swings in the opposite direction from what should always happen. When Kiara moves, white's chance of victory is annihilated. When Amelia moves, black's chances are destroyed. It's basically like they are playing for each other's side, actively sabotaging the win chance percentage of the pieces they are moving. XD
9:11 the magic number ... I think that was the move that made me suffer the most ... p.s. at 20:15 a simple queen to f1 would have ended our suffering instantly T^T
To be super fair on rook promotion, it's overstating things to say you should *never* do it. There are rare non-flex scenarios where a queen would result in an instant stalemate due to blocking the only valid king move. Unlikely a rookie player would even notice, but if a queen promotion would trigger an immediate stalemate, you might have no choice but to tactically under-promote a pawn. It's not just theoretical, since it has happened rarely in high-level play for just that reason. Honestly, I half-expected this game to end in an accidental stalemate from the haphazard chase all over the board. They did their best, though! I hope they enjoyed playing as much at least as much as we enjoyed shouting at our screens.
As it turns out, ame and kiaras games got to you because 20:13 is mate in one, as the queen to f1 is protected by the knight... but ofcourse it isn't played.
Someone probably already spotted this out, but at 20:10 with KG1, wasn't it actually a mate in 1 with Qf1#? Meaning Amelia prolonged the game even further with that wild goose (or chicken/phoenix in this case) chase.
At 20:13 you say there is a mate in two. I'm no expert, but isn't Queen to f1 an instant checkmate? The Knight has the Queen protected, it's game over if Amelia had dropped the Queen right next to the King, right?
They agressively positioned their rooks in line with kings but then never proceed to think about any move relating to it, or how to use it to their advantage.
I haven't played chess in forever, I'm not very good at it, but this whole video still hurt all the same. Rooks going uncaptured for several turns, not just backing the king into a wall when she had a rook and a queen against nothing... My god. Still entertaining as hell.
Boy, I never considered myself as a chess player, probably not even beginner -as I know how the pieces move and that's it- , but I physically winced at the sight of missed captures. Aaaaaaagh
Tommy, quick tip, promoting to a rook/bishop is useful to avoid draw in extremely niche situations, where you clearly have a material or control advantage, and need some more time to develop into a forced mate.
This game was like... They knew how the pieces moved, but that was the extent of their chess knowledge, They didn't think things past the end of their immediate turns, not even considering what the opponent might be able to do in response, or any actual plan to win the game. They were just kind of moving pieces around at random. If ever you think you're bad at chess, watch this match to feel better about yourself lol

instablaster...
"and it is just a very very nice move, which of course is not played"
I mean that sums it all up in a nutshell.
Kiara managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!
I don't think this was a win for either one of them lol
They discovers promotions.
Kiara: "Is this a new rule for zoomers?"
Me: WHAT?!!
People born after the year 1490 are officially Zoomers.
Less than three minutes in and I’m dying.
“Now, you may be wondering what that move accomplishes... The next move is...”
“There is a mate in 2 here… of course, that’s not what happens, the game goes on for nearly another 50 moves.”
That whole game gave everyone involved PTSD.
“Wanna get a chicken at Checkers?”
**starts having violent convulsions and seizures**
Even Calli said she prefers to die before playing chess with that Chicken
And she's the Grim Reaper aprentience
Why torture yourself in such a manner?
Edit: after finally seeing the chess match, I can only say that if Murphy’s Law was a chess match, it’d be this.
Big respect to tommy for enduring that. That dedication is inspiring
If there was a visual representation of pain it would be this chess match
This was less of a chess match and more of a random-number generator throwing darts at a chess board and only allowing legal moves.
The random number generator would've ended the game faster.
this was truly a battle between 2 chess titans
Hehe snom. :)
when you set stockfish's depth of over infinity
Snom
2 chess super titans
More like 2 pea sized brain chess player battle
I fell asleep while watching this stream ( about when they started the chess match). When I woke up they were still playing.
Me: NANI?
I fell unconscious after so much stress and pain
Me: not an expert in chess,so very flexible and forgiving about mistakes
*Pawn don't kill the rook
Inner pain and suffering
Hahaha i love the agadmator layout
"Next is a5. Now you may be wondering what that move accomplishes."
"Next is f4"
It actually makes sense to promote to rook in situations where queen promotion ends in draw by stalemate.
Yup. There are even rare situations where refusing a promotion (keeping your pawn as a pawn) can make an otherwise guaranteed loss into a draw, though those situations are extremely rare and pretty much don't happen in practice.
@@sjasogun pretty sure you can’t refuse promotion anymore.
@@TheOneWhoHasABadName wdym, "anymore" was it some "chess update" or something?

Me: "times? Aight, lemme get my backups out."
Tommy: "content..."
I will take those extra subs to the bank thank youuu
i was there when this was written. The chat suffered a lot
"Now, you may be wondering what the purpose of this move is. The next move-"
I'm was afraid you were blowing your best material early.
Moving the rook too early is such a rookie mistake.
Ina...
I thought I was one of the offenders of this mistake, and then I saw what they both did
@@juncheok8579 at least you didn't hang a queen in a king + queen vs king endgame
Excellent Analysis. Really pointing out all the genius nuances that a club level player would have missed
I'm not an expert, but this looked like a bunch of blunders stitched together to resemble a chess game.
Love the agadmator format, thanks for summarizing their game!
This is some of the most painful chess i have ever seen on Earth.
At 12:20, Rb2 is a blunder because of Kc3, trapping the rook. Of course I don't expect either of them to see it
20:23 and Ame's BGM starts playing lmao
I was here live the whole way through. Jumping off the roof felt like a great idea for once in life.

I got an ad for a chess training program.
That *can't* be a coincidence...
It's not, you get ads depending on what you do online. If you search or watch something long enough you might start getting ads for that.
Can’t wait for another in-depth analysis video like this on the current chess stream
looking forward to the analysis of Gura and amelia's game
Newest video my friend :)
Tommylmao they’re gone do chess again tomorrow. Kieara and Amelia. Can’t wait for the video!
I fell off of my chair laughing when he named 1. c3 h6 the detective's defence, that was a really good joke!

All 20 initial opening moves have been named btw :)
I can still verbally hear Kiara yelling “I WILL PERSIST!” As she runs around with her King at the end

Great analysis! thanks man!
Funny how all beginners move the sides and rooks first, instead of the bishop and knight.
this is the only way i can watch this chess battle without dying
We have the same exact board and pieces style, personally it's the only combination that completely soothes my eyes
That theme be SLAPPIN
Truly a clash of the greatest minds of our generation
me, who has never played chess: "ahh of course, simple really"

I did not enjoy shouting at my screen at all, if that's what you mean. XD
holy shit that agadmator layout damn u got that good
I felt very smart watching that game.
I’m loving the Death Note music in the background
Respect+
I know next to nothing about chess, thank you for explaining why this match was so painful to watch!
Amelia and Kiara Chess gameplay like: Random
BullShit go!
I can't finish the video. I'm in too much pain I'm sorry Tommylmao. The moves hurt me too much. I was in chess too.
I’m a chess casual and I was screaming at my screen. Kiara so could’ve taken that game
I've had some drawn out back and forth games, as I'm by no means good at chess, but this is something else...
As it turns out, ame and kiaras games got to you because 20:13 is mate in one, as the queen to f1 is protected by the knight... but ofcourse it isn't played.
Lol pretty fitting to have Death Note music play over a chess game analysis
This must be a very interesting game to annotate. Thankfully, question marks are an unlimited resource.
the bottom left gambit
20:12 Mate in one actually. Queen goes straight down and the knight protects her and it's checkmate.
Someone probably already spotted this out, but at 20:10 with KG1, wasn't it actually a mate in 1 with Qf1#? Meaning Amelia prolonged the game even further with that wild goose (or chicken/phoenix in this case) chase.
I don't even play chess but I'mma guess this is gonna be bad because my friend gained massive ptsd from talking about it.
2:15 actually you could get mate in the next move by Qf1, directly checking King and being protected by the knight
9:03 's play was moment of kiara flying into frying oil
Damn they're so good even Magnus Carlsen can't get to this level
Pain peko
These are plays I made when I first start blitz chess
17:39 Of all the terrible moves in this game, that Qd5 was just physically painful
nice agadmator layout you have there
At 20:13 you say there is a mate in two. I'm no expert, but isn't Queen to f1 an instant checkmate? The Knight has the Queen protected, it's game over if Amelia had dropped the Queen right next to the King, right?
It is. This guy miss the mate in 1
Yeah seeing it again made me lose some of my brain cells again
I wanna cry

7:20 is no nasty threat there. Amelia blundered that move.
The analysis bar be playing tennis
great analysis of a painful chess glad your brain is not smoothened
This game was such spaghetti. If it hasn’t already been baka mitai’d it should be
22:30
Ah, I see, you're a Plok of culture as well.
20:17 won’t moving Queen to G1 be a one move checkmate?
The detective defense lmao
Boy, I never considered myself as a chess player, probably not even beginner -as I know how the pieces move and that's it- , but I physically winced at the sight of missed captures. Aaaaaaagh
20:15 actually there's a checkmate by moving the Queen to f1
Anyone's brain melted while playing chess?
( I think I looked too hard at playing chess )
Personal Note: My brain melted when i'm trying read every moves within 2 - 3 turns of playing ( My mind will get foggy if i do it too frequently )
20:13 it is actually mate in 1
even though didn't get every move correctly its probably because my brain has melted from this chess match
Here I am waiting for the Ina-Haachama Chess Match Review. And analyzing the suffering that is this game xD
Oh my thank you for letting me know I have my next video idea

Amelia is playing the Rook's gambit very early in the game.

Before watching this game I didn't know what a 'blunder' was.
20:16 Actually it is a mate in 1 instead of a mate in 2: Qf1#
the fucking Death Note soundtrack is just taking the piss lmao
watching this match live was torture
Love how this is parodying agadmator
Sorry about that
They didn't make any illegal moves this game, but some of them might as well be called that.
20:14
Thats even a mate in one ^^
A truly classic game
