    The thief got caught because the video went viral and TV channels took a keen interest. The police realised this and decided "we'd better sort this out as it does not leave a good impression of Thailand". The courts thought the same and gave the thief a stiff sentence - sending out a message. I suspect this kind of theft has happened numerous times but never filmed and consequently no police action is ever taken. Quite lucky he filmed it in the first place. I wish him good luck with his channel and his new business.

    Sorry to hear about this - best to get over it as quickly as possible, don't waste energy on it - it's already done and in the past. Over the years I have had a couple things stolen during my travels - including a top of the line iPhone that was snatched out of my hands on the Lyon Metro as we pulled out of the station and the doors were closing. It sucks but it is gone forever. Better to swallow the bitter feelings after a day or two and move on. It's not the end of the world - far worse things can and do happen.

    I never allow strangers to hug nor touch me anywhere and especially that bit of road he was mugged. Tough lesson learnt. You can wear gold, plenty of people do. I'd have clocked it and to thief did fumble about a bit. Dude was just too euphoric with the videoing and so on.

Frederik looks like a giant sitting there next to you..Om can't stop laughing! ps Please don't take offense, not meant to be atall. Surely it's the camera angle.

    First impression, that looked like a setup, in other words, it looked staged. She seemed to be fumbling around to undo the necklace and at anytime during that process he should have been completely aware what was happening.

      He was filming and distracted plus he may have thought that getting a hug on camera made for good content so went with it. If he didn't have a camera pointed at his face he may have reacted differently

    A taxi driver almost got me and a friend in Bangkok. He took us to an area near Nana, like a back alley with nothing but dudes waiting outside a supposed Bar/Nightclub. There was no Music and nobody around going in and out of the building. We refused to leave the taxi and demanded to be taken back to Insanity Nightclub. It was scary..

    Never had anything stolen in Thailand. In fact, once I dropped some cash in Phuket on my first trip trying to put it in my money belt, and a Thai guy ran over and returned it to me! After that I ditched the money belt and went back to my normal purse with each subsequent trip and no problems ever, even when drunk in the seedier areas ...

    My mother usually wears a golden necklace to hang an amulet but mind you, we live in a small province. Whenever she goes to Bangkok, she takes her necklace off.
    P.S. (Edit) Most big cities are not safe from thieves, except for Tokyo in my opinion. Two of my friends got robbed in front of a big crowd in Paris, a friend of mine got stolen in Naples, one in Vienna, and a former colleague got robbed in the suburb of LA, just to name a few events that happened in my circle of friends. I think we should watch out wherever we go.

    • @ThairishTimes
      @ThairishTimes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes exactly we have to be vigilant everywhere. For the most part I feel safer in Bangkok than I do in my home city of Dublin

    • @ptanisaro
      @ptanisaro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @Thairish Times Nobody in my circle's ever been to Dublin, so I have no say in this :) Bangkok is indeed dangerous, but Thais in general are pretty kind folk, I'd say. I usually get help from strangers wherever I go. Perhaps I looked like a village girl, that's why,... my brothers commented on the stories when I told them about my time in BKK.

    He got damn lucky that the media got involved otherwise I doubt the Tourist Police would have done much of anything. He was smart posting the video on the internet but sort of dumb wearing that at night in that part of Bangkok.
    I tend to only stay in Thai hotels/ guest houses where only Thais stay since many tend to have on the doors of the rooms a place for your own lock and also a closet inside the room where you can put your own lock. If I have someone come to my room for hire for a massage I make sure everything is locked, the keys and extra money hidden. Only enough money to pay for the services and perhaps a tip. In twenty-two years never had a single thing stolen or money taken. You just have to have common sense more than the average foreigner.

      People get killed easily in places like Dominican republic wearing any kind of flashy jewelry. I'll never understand why one would do it. When Paul McCartney was Recording In Lagos a bunch of guys jumped out of a car and robbed him and Linda at knifepoint. Took all their money and their Band on the run tapes too. When you're a foreigner you're already a target and resented by the locals to begin with. Don't add gold to the mix.
