- Let's face it the gong is a pain in the ass, when you first come across it. Why does it play contray to the cymbals. It seems to defy logic, in these videos I will use a clear method of counting to get in time with drum.
This is a primer rather than a comprehensive and I hope to show you how to pinpoint the exact location of the gong strikes in a future video.

Hi Lung,
I am in the process of filming and putting together the videos to assist people in their learning.
The drummer will follow the movements of the dancers inside the lion. But there are times when the drummer will lead the lion. For instance
Multiple lions, the music will help synchronise the lions.
Something happening that the dancers are unaware of.
Bringing the performance to a halt.
The drum should vary between loud, soft, hard, weak, fast, slow, ascending, descending, smooth, halting and knowing when to hold a silence. The drummer needs to be in time, playing the correct beat not before or after but spot on with the movement.
As a drummer it is important to remain calm and not get overexcited. When the drummer becomes too excited, the drumming becomes too fast. The lion is the king of the beasts so the music is at a stately pace. The base beat (shu dian) is around 60 bpm, which is a resting heart beat rate. The base beat is punctuated with elevated rhythms to match the lion's increasing vigour.
Real time learning
If you are based in the USA, you can check out "Leungs White Crane" based in San Francisco. Maybe they can advise you of a team near you. As I am not that familiar with the American teams. If you have no luck, let me know and I will try to assist you.

cymbals stance is not good, should not be moving around. also only move one hand up. dominant hand lifts the cymbal and hits the other one. the other one does not move. hope this helps.
