It's probably best to focus on getting a good understanding of the mechanics of growing wealth rather than thinking about what you "should" have. One is logic-driven and will move you forward in some form whereas the other is more emotions-led and so a bit questionable in terms of value.

Another really interesting video would be compounding debt. Good comments on interest website where people who know what they are talking about show a simple example of interest and principal of a buyer who brought in Akl 2021 and a buyer who brought the exact same property today in 2024 - showing that with price reductions e.g. by 300k-500k on say a house purchased worth 1.3M then and 1M now how that individual pays something like 6-700k less in the form of interest and principal on mortgage repayments than the person who brought the house in 2021 at peak of market. In the case of logic, a property portfolio with 1M+ mortgage can end up paying principal and interest payments multiple times what they 'think' they are actually making in equity or profits. Like say 800k debt today - in future 1.5M interest and principal when they've made profit of like 200-300k where interest exceeds that by double

im 33 and was starting to build wealth and savings. Until I lost my job In August due to redundancies. I also am legally blind and about to have my cornea replaced, so that means with recovery I can only work part time. I had saved about $20k for rainy day like this. I have my own house that I used from Inheritance and kiwisaver but is it still considered "Bad" that I cant do full time for 2 years while the recovery period of surgery?

Interesting point you make, so if you have debt in the form of a student loan then your 'net worth' or wealth is negative in your words. But you can have a $1 million property portfolio with 100k equity and debt of 900k, but your net worth is positive? It's no different to the student loan example i.e we live in a system where its highly likely your level of debt (liabilities) will exceed your equity for majority of your career especially if you decide to have property portfolio. Debt in the form of a mortgage isn't any different and certainly not an asset, it has interest as well.
