I'm going to have to think on that one. My projects are all over the place right now and I'm trying to do more sewing. I do have a jacked overhaul that I'm working on that might just work for you.
Hey Mark. I'm making a Christmas dress for my sister and I am putting five ruffles on the skirt piece. I think this video is going to help me a LOT. Thank you for posting it.
I love to buy things at a thrift store because I know that the money goes to people who need it. It makes me feel good about splurging! Send me photos Ellen!
Great rainy weekend project!!! Mark, I own all of your books. Love them. Your next book next to be pet inspired. Doggy and kitty clothing and accessories for both you and your animal companion.
This is awesome! I always wondered how ruffles are made on clothing (to make my own clothing/accessories complete with ruffles) and now I know. It's so simple! Great tutorial!
You will have to take out the side seam stitches and then cut your fabric to match it exactly. Add the length plus seam allowance and hem and stitch it together.
Yay! Always wanted to learn to do ruffles. I want to do ruffles on the ends of pants like little kids wear. I always want the hippie look even though I'm 54 and I embarrass my sister who is 59 and dresses like a Talbot's ad. She looks great and all and I can understand the embarrassment of having a hippie sister when you're a Talbot's looking woman, but once I turned 50, I stopped caring about what people thought of me and care more about what _I_ think of myself and I am still stuck in the 60's with all the peace signs, fringe, ruffles, tie dyed, psychedelic colors, etc. While that's "couture," it still helps me learn how to do ruffles for my hippie self. Thanks! Also, I'm 6' tall and I like to put some kind of trim at the bottom of my pants or skirts to make it longer. So glad the maxi dresses are back!
I loved it! I used to have a jacket a lot like that except on the back, it had embroidered across the shoulders in big print VICTORY with embellishments. A friend of mine WANTED it and I sold it to her and I kind of regret it, but she loved it more than I did. Now that it is summer in Alabama, I won't need anything warm for a while, but I can see those leaves on the bottom of a blue jean skirt.....yeah. :)
absolutely cute! question when you cut the strips off of the skirt why didn't you cut both the front and back at the same time? would that give you a more even cut by cutting the back then flipping over and cutting the front?
some made from scratch playlists would be so awesome...construction and pattern alterations/cutting out of fabric is so elusive to me...I know you could give alot of great insight...you're a genius in shortcuts...hope you can help :-) Blessings, E.
misstina7660 Hi Tina, it depends on the length of the skirt and how long you want it. I cut off 2 pieces that were 3 1/2" each, so 7" in total. But remember, 1" was seam allowance (1/2" on top and 1/2" on bottom)
Jana Nicolas The same way actually. Gather and stitch. Just a reminder to press the little gear next to the SUBSCRIBE button and then press GET UPDATES so you won't miss my new videos, OK!
Mark - it is hard to tell from the video - is the contrasting fabric a bottom weight fabric as the skirt is made from, or did you use a lighter weight fabric?
hey what's those pencils and scissors you're using? Thx so much for the awesome videos :-) Love your work Mark! Do you have any serger projects for us? (decor and construction)
I have a serger, but very few people have them so I feel like it might not reach a larger audience. I may give it a try in the future. Still on the fence about it.
If you're having the problem with certain silky and harder to work with materials, try wax paper while you sew. Literally you can sew it on and it helps it not. I had that problem and thank God for moms. =) Then after you sew it on, you simply pull off the wax paper. It should NOT pull off the thread sewn itself. If so, needle may need replacing. I haven't had problems so far with it. =)
Brenda Fuller And not as difficult as it looks. If you don't have a serger, try zigzagging the seams so they don't fray.....or use something called Fray Check or Fray Lock from E-6000. *Just a reminder to make sure to click the GEAR next to the SUBSCRIBED button on my page and then click SEND ME UPDATES so you'll know when I post new videos on TH-cam. Otherwise, it might not let you know. Thanks so much!

Because, then it would look like you just added a piece to a skirt instead of incorporating the original skirt fabric in the design which looks more professional.

Try using a button hole thread in your bobbin so that the thread doesn't break when you're pulling it to create the ruffle. That will work, I promise.
Hey Carisa! It's great to see you again.
yah!impressive work am just a beginner and u give me hope!

How do you add a straight fabric border to the bottom of a skirt to add length ?
You will have to take out the side seam stitches and then cut your fabric to match it exactly. Add the length plus seam allowance and hem and stitch it together.

I want to add a ruffle hem to a T-shirt dress I have but without cutting the dress. How would I do that?
You will want to let out the hem for sure...That should do it and give you some seam allowance.
Mark how many inches did you cut off????? I really like the end result of these two colors.
misstina7660 Hi Tina, it depends on the length of the skirt and how long you want it. I cut off 2 pieces that were 3 1/2" each, so 7" in total. But remember, 1" was seam allowance (1/2" on top and 1/2" on bottom)

how do u keep the the ruffle from catching up on the needle, and it doesn't snag, bunch up ?
It shouldn't. Just sew slowly around the hem when you're applying the ruffle.
