SURGEON exposes the real Risks with hernia MESH

- Simply sewing tissues together to fix hernias rarely works. Hernias have been a problem in humankind since civilization formed and writing was possible. The advent of implantable meshes has resulted in real benefits for patients undergoing hernia operations.
If you are having a hernia repair, more than likely, you will have a mesh implanted.
Having a mesh implanted has its risks. I made a video years ago discussing hernia meshes, and it is time for a new video. Here I explain some of the most common risks associated with a hernia mesh. Make sure to watch this before your hernia surgery.

The medical device industry is not as well regulated as the drug industry. I looked into mesh for my repair and decided the methods products were still being developed. Went with Shouldice repairs as they have been doing them for over 80 years. I am very happy with the results.
Plastics or polyester inside your body next to your organs...scarry
💯 this is how most hernias are fixed. Permanent plastic in you forever
Agree. I have a small umbilical hernia that developed during my pregnancy and was thinking about surgery....? But I decided not to risk my life, it's too much risk and untold possible complications. I can live with it. Why do they do it only under general anesthetic is another suspicious question to me. It's better to avoid hospitals. 😢😮
@@blissfulignorance6452 if your not straining regularly, doing manual labor, or have chronic constipation, and the hernia is small, and not causing any issues, it's more than likely you will never have to do anything for it. If you don't bother it, it may just leave you in peace as well...lol

Thx for the info. Huge mesh pro and con controversy on the subject. It seems to me, that the outcome too, may depend on the skill of the surgeon too.
I had laparoscopic mesh back around 2001 and never had any complications. Not long after the surgery I never had even the slightest reminder that anything had ever been wrong. I ran the marathon that year, and in those days did weight training until decades later when COVID closed down the gyms. I still run, but at my present age very slowly.

Reading some of these comments in here I can’t believe people want so long with an inguinal hernia. I had one in 2009 on the right side. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. I was in Germany at the time and I couldn’t wait for the doctor to get me in to get it done. He used mesh and so far so good.

@@Str8Snag replying to question as how I feel right now I'd say that I feel great everything feels normal just like how I used to feel years ago, zero pain back to normal activity except carrying heavy weights but that will comes with time. And the sex activity is normal and comfortable unlike before the operation.
I had surgery 5 years ago. I too felt fine afterward. But mesh is a foreign object in the body. Your body changes over time. Mesh doesn't. Every now and then I feel extreme pain in the area where the mesh is. Most days I am fine. If I knew then what I know now I would have insisted on surgery without mesh even though the risk of reoccurrence is higher.
My advice is to continue to work out, diet and exercise so that your body doesn't make too many changes.
Had hernia repair with mesh in 2011 and another in 2016. No issues so far.

You should be worried. Go to the Shouldice Hospital.
Why is it that surgeons have lost the necessary skills to sew the muscles together to overlap and provide a natural repair solution in lieu of a mesh product?
Exactly! I'm asking the same question. 😅😮

The mesh that I got 12 years ago destroyed me. Before the surgery I had only a bulge without sensations. After the surgery - permanent discomfort and sometimes even pain. Eventually the bulge popped back and it is slowly getting worse. The thought of having another surgery totally freaks me out. I am stuck.
I've not been right since having an inguinal hernia repair with mesh, I have constant pain in my left groin
So sorry for your situation.Prayers for recovery 🙏
Same scenario for me as you 2 been thru. Found a quality surgeon that did a robotic inguinal repair 4 days ago, and it went 99.9% better this time and everything feels like it's in a better/right place down there, only the higher up surgical wounds ache a bit. That first "movement" after surgery feels like a meeting with God. Good luck, this injury/recovery from ain't nothing nice.
I just had Recurrence surgery. Make the Appt with the surgeon to get it done again with a most likely different procedure. Get it done. Get it behind you. Make the call NOW.

I had three hernias repaired on March 21 of this year. I'm 75 and live in a cabin off grid in NW Montana. I have to cut my on firewood etc. I have always been fit, Thank God for that. I taught Jujitsu in the basement of the local bank here when I was sixty. Like I said, I've always been fit, but I have to tell you, yhe first week was just hell. Getting in and out of bed to go to yhe bathroom or put a log on the fire was near impossible. The second week was better and today Im back to working out. My surgeon told me that they have a new mesh and that the old one was problematic. He must've been right. I feel great. The first six weeks were sucky, but since then its been all down hill. If you do get hernia surgery, make sure to stay hydrated. Going to the bathroom can br very painful if you don't.
Do you still do jiu jitsu?
Thank you for that advise. I've read you can get up and around the same day and I'm like what? Not at 59 yrs old 😊

Hmm.. this experience must be very painful
Bilateral inguinal hernia mesh six years ago, problems immediately after, no problems showed in tests and after a five year long fight i went out of state for removal surgery and it was wrapped around blood supply left side. One year later i figure out (not a doctor) i pulled a pelvic muscle that affected the testicle cord and that the mesh made these issue's worse. Just starting therapy after six years of deteriorating pelvic muscles.
Natural repair advocate here the mesh in my case was tight and continued to tighten after surgery.
this sounds similar to what I'm going thru. what state did you have to go to get it removed?

Omg. I think this is what is happening to me . I'm getting soooo sick and nobody can figure out why . I had two hernia mesh implanted and muscles repaired by my pelvis . Now I feel like there's a tight band in there. It causes horrible constipation, horrible reflux, I desperately need help . Has anyone else gotten really sick from these ? Brain swelling , high blood pressure , brain fog ,hormone problems ,panic attacks ,etc
it's abit similar, that after i got my laparoscopic surgery done, i felt something that i've never felt before in the past (before surgery). initially i felt discomfort around my pelvic and groin area, urinating feels like a torture and it felt like im having a UTI, but it doesn't burn when i urinate. after 4 weeks have passed, the pain is 80% reduced, and i am still having around 20% discomfort. I then turned to TCM that alleviates the discomfort i am having. I went to the local TCM practitioner in my area and he prescribed me powder capsules that supposed to reduce the discomfort, the TCM medication i consumed is similar to the patented TCM medication that you guys can find on the internet called "Ba Zheng San" - but my local TCM practitioner added few more herbs on top of that. I've been taking it for a week and it gives me around 10% discomfort. I know that TCM doesn't work the same like Western medication, TCM works slower but sure, but at least no harsh side effects like many antibiotics do. On top of the TCM i took, i also consume quercetin supplements and been doing kegel exercise too. l am just hoping that this will get resolved soon in 3-6 months.
@@ahsnap9103 I had an inguinal hernia on the left side an since surgery 7 years ago an everything has been great until last this August I injured myself at work a week after having a heat stroke and stood up too fast from a stooped position and felt my left testicle pull really bad an had immediate pain an a limp. And since then I've been having stabbing pains on the left side of my pelvis and it feels like it's the mesh or something internally stabbing me along with testicle pain. I've had 2 panic attacks and have been to Dr's, urologists, ER's and none of them are exactly sure what it is. They think I pulled a muscle when I injured myself an now that the mesh is pinching nerves. An causing the pain. The only remedy I've heard so far is getting nerve ablation or nerve blocking shots. And It just doesn't sit right with me. I've already been on pills an could still feel the pain an they just messed my stomach up. But they also have found an epydidmal cyst on my testicle thru an ultrasound an just looking up symptoms on google it seems to me now it could be the cyst causing the pain. It's exhausting an painful. I ended up getting laid off of that job an have yet to be able to find another due to the pain. I pray God gives me a solution!
I had a strangulation of the colon before my emergency hernia surgery, so they weren't able to put in a mesh because my colon was ...shall we say, pissed? No loss or perforation of the colon but they were just worried about infection or perforation. They warned me it could require re-repair and sure enough it did. This time around I had a mesh and it's been rock solid ever since. I'll take the risk of meshes over strangulation. By far the worst pain I've felt in my life, and I've had multiple back fusions, hip and knee dislocations, and other nasty ouchies. It was bad, y'all. It's no joke.
Why they can't use or invent something natural innovation, something new to use instead of plastic , something which is not causing infection and anything toxic to body but in the same time it's strong and holds everything together without another tear
I’ve had a laparoscopic hernia repair surgery last week. My consultant used a 3D Bard mesh. I’m feeling relatively ok. No massive pain at the moment. Some mild discomfort. However, I’ve now seen that there are so many lawsuits going on against Bard… I’m worried now. Some talk about the mesh eroding and plastic fibres getting lose in your body… giving you all sorts of health problems. I’m a little bit scared…

@tudorconducta1929 I'm glad to hear that you're recovering well. My hernia repair is set for March, and I'm terrified. A big part of me wants to find a way to live with it and bypass surgery. Can you please give me a rough week to week timeline of pain levels, and at what point you were able to do things unassisted?
@@computerblue01 of course. Really the worst day was day two, but in fairness, they had warned me about it. It’s because your surgeon will put some internal anaesthetic which wears off about 48 hours after the surgery, and that’s why day two it’s the worst time. Now don’t imagine some horrible unimaginable pain. It’s just sore, and then you go online to find out why you’re sore, and you find out all these horror stories which, as you say mainly reflect how things used to be. But to give you an idea I was back at work on day five I’m a musician, and on day eight I was on stage giving a piano concert. I have been literally pain-free since about day 8. I kept forgetting to take the painkillers that they prescribed me because I wasn’t in any pain. You’ve got to be careful and remember not to lift more than 5 kgn it’s easy to forget because I really felt absolutely fine and normal. I’m going to be four weeks since the operation in a couple of days, and they will let me start lifting my own bag to go to work, which is the only thing wasn’t allowed to do. I have full trust in the doctors. Listen carefully to what they tell you about after-care, listen carefully to the physiotherapist, who will visit you either just before, or after surgery, and do the very simple physical exercises that they give you. It’s really important that you don’t just lie in bed, that you move as early as you can so that it heals not just in straight line, but actually it heals organically around your body movements. Roughly 24 hours after surgery I was up by myself in the house, going up and down the stairs, Was completely independent and didn’t need any support walking. You will be absolutely fine. Listen carefully to the advice and be proactive, move as early as you can, and do the physio exercises. On day one I could barely do them , but then it gets better. And that’s the thing - to do them a little every day. You have to lift up your knee and on day two I over did it and it sent shooting pains, but that was because I forced it. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Where are you having it done? I was in central London.

Double inguinal hernia operation with mesh and titanium screws done laparoscopically two years ago. Went grocery shopping the next day. Running again two weeks later. It's great not having great lumps popping out down there anymore. Feeling very normal and glad I had them both done at the same time. To the point and very informative. My only gripe is the amount of hand movement. I would think this a rap song if it was muted.
Had non-mesh repair in 2014 -- all good thus far (I'm 78). In the initial consultation, the surgeon asked why I wanted non-mesh; I told him I had heard little positive about the use of mesh. He said "no problem" as he knew some 20+ methods to repair a hernia and would decide on the method to use when he got in and saw the condition of the nearby body parts. He made no effort to inform me of the benefits of mesh use -- maybe he did not think them to be great enough to bother informing me. Post-op, while I was still out, the doctor my wife that the method he used had a 15% failure rate in 5 years.

I hope you are telling people that the mesh can leave people disabled, lose body parts, can fuse and migrate into other tissue. As a patient whom has had a defective mesh implanted, I can safely say this surgeon knows very little in how mesh can harm people.
@englishwithmaya6096 Plastics indeed pose health risks due to the chemicals they contain. These include bisphenols and phthalates, which disrupt the endocrine system and have links to reproductive harm, cancer risk, and metabolic disorders1. Additionally, tiny microplastics, found in food, water, and air, can leach chemicals and present their own risks12. Plastic production is high, and its non-biodegradability threatens the environment3. Thousands of chemicals in plastics, some unregulated, may impact health4. In short, while plastics are ubiquitous, their potential harm warrants awareness and efforts to reduce exposure. 🌍🚫🔬

Yeah man, and an untreated hernia can kill you in the worst case scenario. Thats how most surgical repairs work....its not as good as simply not having the original injury in the first place, but the risks are worth it when compared to leaving the orignal injury untreated.
So far so good with my mesh. Atleast I no longer have excruciating stabbing pain if I cough wrong like I did with my hernia.
@@mikeg3529 hello bro. I am scheduled for a laparoscopic inguinal hernia mesh repair next week.
May I know how you're doing ? What is the level of your pain and your activity ?
Worst case scenario for a very small percentage of people. There is higher risk by having plastic stitched into your abdomen.
The headline is a bit misleading. There’s no “exposing the risks” all these risks were explained by my doctor. Very informative though. I just had mine done four weeks ago and it’s holding up great.
We need more surgeons who can repair hernias without using mesh. Hernia mesh is big business!
Damn right it is my hernia repair was $40k
@@hans-erik5001 The companies producing this mesh would lose a lot of money if surgeons could still carry out traditional hernia surgery.
they used to but the rate of recurrence was very high because abdominal wall pressure is very strong. The expansion of the internal abdominal wall tears a primary suture closure back open which is why they began using mesh. they are coming out with mesh that fully absorbs and disappears over time therefore its your own collagen covering the defect after abosrption.
@@hans-erik5001 Lol, mesh repair in Colombia (inguinal hernia), top Clinic, an experienced doctor, laparoscopy, costed me just 3K USD a month ago, all expenses included.

They checked me for a hiatal hernia because I have really bad acid reflux and I dont have that thank god! I dont know if its the surgeons where I live it but some people I know have had surgery to fix a hiatal hernia and nothing but problems afterwards! 4:13
A family membet of mine is having a horrible experience post surgery. I feel like they need to find a better solution for hernias. Do not get surgery!
Hi i also have a hiatus hernia and take a tablet every day for it. I have been to see a Surgeon aboit it and was informed not to get it done. Its is an operation that only gets done as the last resort. The tablet i take keeps my reflux in check and when i dont take it its hell. I take it 30min before i have my main meal at night.
I wonder if they can use a material that our biology accepts.
I have mesh after a nick of the knife in a previous surgery, had to have a repair after that,iv been sick everyday since, an the pain to my stomach is so bad ,i never leave my house😢
My hernia surgery is Monday the 9th. I pray God guides their hands. He is suppose to be one of the top 10 surgeons in Dallas. Will update after surgery is finished.
I had inguinal hernia surgery repair on my left side about 10 months ago my doctor told me that I was at risk for having one on my left side well I was jogging and all of sudden I started to feel some pain on my right side come to find out it's a hernia so now I'm wearing a hernia belt until I can get this side fixed.
how did it go?
I am 75 and had hernia surgery 3 years ago. Because the anaesthetist refused to put me under because a heart condition, the surgery wad performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon was fanatastic and I was home 3 hours after the surgery.
I did research the clinic you referred to and discovered that they only take easy cases and the patients spend at least 3 days recovering in posh conditions.
I had both sides repaired with mesh the right side has been no issue however the left side done a few years after has failed and now needs repaired. I used the same Dr for both but have found a different Dr to correct the failed left side. Also have hiatal hernia and will be using a nonsurgical approach for that repair since it is not extreme. Prayers are appreciated. Thank you! 😊
Did he put a mesh in? any problems yet? Thank you.
Any thoughts about having the mesh? Scared of them.
What was your heart condition ? I have a heart issue too and I'm worried about the anesthesia. I have to get my repair done though.
@@franhar8292 I just had it done two days ago and I was scared too but mesh was the best option available for me. It only took two hours for the surgery, initially there's no pain but after a couple of days you can have a pain level to about a 5 but it is manageable with pain meds.
I have a herina surgery tomorrow and im nervous
Why do I feel like you’re just trying to sell us on some new unknown procedure?
I'm at day 6 post laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh. I feel great already. Post-op checkup tomorrow, and expect to be back to work the day after.
Great to hear. Most people have a similar experience
What is better for inguinal hernia if mesh have also risk

What about hernia repair with silk mesh??
My hernia repair is for a esophageal hernia. Any advise after its done Monday?
I had my epigastric hernia repaired at the Shouldice 1 year later and couldn't be happier!
Y?
I done hernia operation 2 times
And now after the operation next day the balls are sounding
Mesh ya without😢
I have had 2 repairs and one removal and new one implanted.( even though I said I didn’t want any, ever again). It ripped in less than one month, after surgery. Now no one will take it out! I am in pain, always. No one will help. They are worried about being responsible, for whatever is damaged in there.
Going through the same here this will be my 4th surgery
@@Bernice-ug8ih this is all so ridiculous. It should be illegal already . No one else should ever have this implanted in them.
@@donnamyers2025 so true . I'm coming up on another possible hernia repair end of August or beginning of September. I wish they would just fix it already and stop bullshitting . Hell they better off putting duck tape and I'm sure it would work better than that mesh

Can you take a part of my leg muscle to repair the tear?
can u get mesh surgery if u get small hernia again (years after ur last hernia surgery)
any infos on biodegradable meshes, like gore bio-a? what timeframe for degradation is best for young, fit patients with a small hernia? i got mine from incorrectly using a lifting belt, so my coretissue is normally strong enough. just to make that clear.
I had the daistisis Recti surgery 2 weeks ago and he mesh used is biodegradable and will be out my body in 2 years. I’m in the United Kingdom so maybe different mesh bin other countries.
The mesh is the reinforcement. If it dissolves you are back to square one, no reinforcement and hernia again.

I'm getting a mesh fitted by next week. I have no choice. My hernia is getting bigger from time to time
Good luck to you! I hope it goes well. I'm having inguinal hernia surgery with mesh June 7th. I didn't have a choice as well.
If any one out there has a hernia now and is looking for no mesh hernia repair then check out Desarda in Florida ..They also do mesh removal but the removal can't be done on patients that had laparoscopic hernia repair.
Did you have it done?. any doctors you recommend ?
I@@FTarquin I had an inguinal hernia repaired in the state of Penn. by a doctor that was very skilled but he used mesh. The doctor did not do Laparoscopic and I was very fortunate not to have any problems even though I wanted the mesh out after all the bad news that came out about it. I had my surgery back in 2005 at that time and never heard of Dr.Desarda because he was in India and not in the states yet. If I need to have the other side repaired I will definitely go to have it done by Desarda in Florida but so far I'M good for now.
Pl send more details
Can you suggest a good Dr in Mumbai India. Many thanks
@@FTarquinI did at the Hernia Center in Sarasota Dr. Yunis. Highly recommend!
I had my hernia operation 8 days ago.
I've had two inguinal hernias (each side) repaired with the mesh (one side in 2012, the other in 2019). I could not be happier with them. If you're living with hernia discomfort and unsightliness, don't hesitate...just get it done. It's outpatient surgery and recovery is a breeze.

I had a hernia repair on left suffer in severe pain all the time I'm very unhappy been suffering 2 years I would not recommend mesh at all I don't trust any doctor
That's horrible. I feel for you. Do you think your pain is the result of the mesh implant? Feeling the way you do now, if you could go back to before the surgery, what would you have chosen to do differently?
Would have chosen none mesh implant really wish I could get on disability 4 hernia surgery on right one on left grion
It even ruined my hunting can't shoot crossbow anymore hurts to bad
Have you looked into radiofrequency nerve ablation? I'm about to go through it after 2 hernia repairs and 4 months of post surgical pain. A lidocaine nerve block seems to show promise that the real surgery will help.
Had my surgery done with mesh 6 months ago. Had a much longer recovery with a decent amount of pulling tissue type of pain than what has been stated of 4 to 6 weeks. As time went on is did get better but certain random movements cause knee dropping pain. Recently had a sciatica problem which needed Therapy core strengthening exercises. A month after starting therapy things were getting better for the sciatica and we pushed a bit more (took it very slow and light at 1st). Then got more aggressive somewhat with therapy and also the next day I tripped and fell with NO obvious pain at all. Got up quickly without a problem. 2 days later my hernia pain (which never really went away. just some random movement causing pain like tissue and/or nerves fibers pulling apart) got so severe it dropped me to my knee and needed to have the surgeon look at it after 6 months. He said no infection or swelling and gave me some pain meds. Now 2 weeks later and I still have a lot of pain and soreness. Feels similar to a week after surgery with the sharp burning, pulling apart feeling I kept having but the core muscle don't feel weak. I've read all the problems some people have had and just hope I'm not going to be another one of them. I will say, there's plenty of studies about mesh problems, some of which down play the %'s of how many patients complain about it. But I've see enough people and read enough from others who have problems to know that it's not a very small amount who have issues. My doctor has been said to have a great reputation for the surgery, but although he's got a decent bedside manner I feel like I didn't get much input of the possibilities. I did do research for a maybe a week. More about which type of surgery was best. Open, laparoscopic or robotic. Not as much about the mesh issues down the line. I've now dug deeper and am hoping I'm not one of those with constant pain. Before this latest setback I could swing a golf club after a few months and do most out door work around the home, except digging or really heavy lifting. Now, I can only function with easy stuff. I'm hoping the fall I had just ripped the scar tissues, but that ripping tissue pain never completely went away before the setback. Just had less occurrences. People who may read need to know not just about the good outcomes. But those who have to deal with the bad too. It may be something to deal with for the rest of your life.
Just had my hernia repair this past Tuesday, and it was extremely painful the first 3 days, but here I am day 4, and I’m able to walk around and stand up straight (with a belly binder). Despite the pain, I would go through this surgery verses dealing with an incarcerated/ strangulated bowel any day!!
This is exactly what I had . How is it now ?
