Aussie citizen here. For those that live in countries that aren't part of the Commonwealth, citizenship in Australia is a very lengthy and expensive process. Firstly, to enter into a Australia you must apply for a visa (around ~$5kaud depending on the visa e.g. student, working holiday, skilled migrant visa). Once you have your visa, if you want to become a citizen, you must first be granted permanent residence (PR). To gain PR status, you must have legally lived in Australia for 5 years. That in itself is a costly exercise as the longest visa available to foreigners is a work holiday visa which is 2 years. To live 5 years and qualify for PR, you'll then need to apply for and pay for a bridging visa (around ~$12kaud) before your current visa ends (whatever one you entered the country with), then once you are granted said visa you can then apply for your PR. Once you have PR status it's another 2 years of living full time in Australia before you can apply and pay for your citizenship application. There is a formal interview, background check and written test you must all pass before your officially given Australian Citizenship. Like I said, it's lengthy but having been an Aussie for ages and traveling overseas all the time, it is definitely a passport that makes it easier to be able to travel freely around the world without hassle and/or minimal fuss in applying for visas in other countries.
I'm not sure about here in New Zealand for citizenship. But I do know the Samoan who want to live here takes a long process for them to become a citizen....But this is good to know for myself Jamily TV because I'm New Zealand born Samoan thinking of moving to the Pacific in future as a teacher.

Citizenship here in Australia is around $285 depending on age. Kids 16 and under are free if applying with a parent and 60 years and over get a senior's discount. The thing that's hard and expensive is the price of Australian Residency. That costs more than $3k. I can only speak of New Zealand since I moved here from there. They waver the Australian Residency and you can apply directly for citizenship for people from certain countries including New Zealand depending on how long you've been in Australia. Back in the early 00s the New Zealand government had an agreement with the Australian government to make it harder for Kiwis to live here permanently because so many Kiwis were moving here. So any New Zealanders that lived or moved here before 26th February 2001 don't need to apply for residency and can apply straight for citizenship but everyone who moved here after, though able to live and work freely for the most part, have to apply for residency first before they can apply for citizenship after living here for at least 5 years. Not sure what the process is for Americans or Samoan citizens wanting to become Australian citizens but I'm guessing they have to apply for the right visa first, residency and then citizenship. It's a real pain to become an Aussie citizen so most Samoans become New Zealand citizens first so it's easier to do their papers here.
Wow! That’s a crazy and involved process. Weird that it’s not the same process for everyone regardless of country of citizenship. I wonder why?? Can’t really think of a reason why it’s not just the same. Unless it’s like a spite kinda thing?? Weird.
New Zealand and Australia have a very close relationship. Our visa requirements are strict at times. Australia realized that many people from Asia and South East Asia were using New Zealand residency as a way to enter their country, Australia. This was considered a backdoor entry. So Australia made it harder for people to gain Citizenship. New Zealand and Australia have work and health benefits between both countries. As well as easier acess to buying property in each other's country. It would be like thousands of people going to Canada and then crossing into America to live which was their main goal. We all know the huge issues that the U.S.A has with uncontrolled illegal migrants from Mexico.
You’re so lucky to have your mother. Great rainbow moment! P.S. my wife’s father was a high chief from Western Samoa, his name Solía Moetului and I may have to consider this info 🤔 thanks for sharing Joe.

We did get to keep our US passports. But i think it’s because the US doesn’t have a policy against it yet. It doesn’t recognize dual citizenship, but it doesn’t require one to relinquish their citizenship if they get citizenship in another country. Not sure about NZ unfortunately.
You qualify immediately for Samoan citizenship as you're Samoan born. Samoa immigration could also stamp your foreign passport (the office is in the same building shown in the video) with an exemption certificate confirming you have citizenship entitlements and therefore could remain in Samoa indefinitely. The fee is around WST$65 and all you need is your birth certificate, your foreign passport and the fee. Provide paperwork if your name has changed since birth.

The hurdles you have to go through in Australia if you are a non-citizen are too long to mention everything. However, I think they start from the starting assumption that you are a possible terrorist and then if you pass several checks, an english language test, a history test (ie: you need to sit a written exam on Australian history and civics), as well as income tests (you have to earn over a certain amount in X number of consecutive years depending on which country who come from). If you earn below that income threshold for one year in those X number of consecutive years, you have to start all over again.

There is American Samoa, which you are correct, you don't need a visa to stay or work there, and then there's Samoa, formerly known as Western Samoa. We live in Samoa, which is its own independent country and you do need a visa to stay/work there if you do not have Samoan citizenship. You coming over for a visit sometime?

I thought as an american ,I don't need a visa to stay or work in Samoa ??? Are we talking about the same US Island or somewhere else ????
There is American Samoa, which you are correct, you don't need a visa to stay or work there, and then there's Samoa, formerly known as Western Samoa. We live in Samoa, which is its own independent country and you do need a visa to stay/work there if you do not have Samoan citizenship. You coming over for a visit sometime?
