  • Part 6 (and final) of my South Pacific trip.
From Auckland, I fly into Samoa. I stay in the capital, Apia, and see the sights on foot. Then I jump in a taxi to see up in the hills and the other side of the island.

My MOTHER is from Western Samoa. I am Afatasi ( half ) Samoan and I have been to Samoa a few times. I love my roots but sometimes the people's attitudes are NOT up to their ways of upbringing. It's so peaceful beautiful and tropical here. When it rains it still hot. My mother's nieces took me to McDonald's and I remember my cousin telling me that a combo is $13 sefulu tolu tala. I was taken to their food market it's like our ( farmer's market ) in Amelika. I was told that the cost of things are double what it cost in America. I have to take my kids out there to see some of their roots. 🇼🇸💕 Polynesian Bloodline 💕💕

It's because if they make the roads wider, it'll get on families land, and that's a huge commotion with government vs these families. It's kind of like, "when in Rome, you do what the Roman's do... born and raised in the states, living here in Samoa for 6 years now, you get used to the roads...

That whole waterfront area is undergoing a major 10-year upgrade at the moment. There will be a bit more stuff to do along that waterfront in the years to come and a lot more walker/cycle-friendly. As for the rubbish, yes it's a recurring nightmare. There are fines in place but people don't care and still litter. However, half the problem is the lack of bins. So there will be more rubbish/recycle bins all along the waterfront with the upgrades.

Its a crack up watching a Palagi tourist's perspective of Samoa when you are absolutely clueless of the locals and the places youre visiting except for the tourist brochure places of notice, you having no idea of the families youve walked onto their lands without being told to leave.
"On the question of "what is that?" at 8min mark, that is actually the Samoan Parliament Building under reconstruction.
The former RLS residence was formerly the Head of State Le Susuga Malietoa Tanumafili le Lua's Residence as well.
Littering was something I didnt see when I was in Apia at the same time you were there. You had noticed the things I hadnt noticed and the area in which they were littering is actually on my families land. My mother is a Tuiletufuga from the Tuiletufuga clan from Apia village and people trashing the area are not from the area.
I live in Australia so obviously, I had travelled from Australia.
Apia village, from the area of Vaimauga, is my ancestral homeland from the Sa Tuiletufuga side of my family. As for my Tufuga surname, thats from my mother's village of birth, Asau, Savaii Island, which is also the high chiefly title of the village and all people with this surname are also related to the High Chief of Asau.
But, back to Apia...My mother's father is a Tuiletufuga, all people with either Papalii or Tuiletufuga surnames, are direct descendents of Malietoa Talavou, Malietoa Talavou's second wife's son, Tapu, had married the Taupou daughter (Taele) of the Apia High Chief (Uipo), and all their offsprings were given the title of either Papalii or Tuiletufuga.
(As a background, the current Malietoa is the descendent of the Malietoa Talavou's half brother Malietoa Moli and they fought each other in a war for the right to rule SAMOA. The Brits and later the Germans supported Malietoa Moli's descendents in the end, even though Talavou's supporters routed them on the battlefield. But, politics and military campaigns dont always go hand in hand in Samoan political history).
Anyways, back to your very very brief Apia visit. You saw very very little of Samoa, but, it is still a great youtube the clarity of your videos are so vivid and Im impressed with your camera. The zoom in is incredible.
As for a picturesque view of Samoa...Savai'i is very impressive and less cluttered and much more traditionally Samoan than in Apia.
    Nice TH-cam and thanks.

What is your comparison between Tonga and Samoa?

    • @vichands3743
      @vichands3743 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Samoa and Tonga are very similar but Samoa is way advance compared to Tonga. I made a mistake of spending 7 days in Tonga. Had I known I would have just spend 2 days in Tonga and the rest in Samoa. There are more things to do and see in Samoa and the cost of food in Samoa is way cheaper than Tonga. I recommend to anyone who is traveling to the pacific islands to do Tonga for 2 3 days then spend more days in Fiji and Samoa.

D.SéЬasтiaпо Sçalia ...I think Samoa and Tonga are quite similar in structual physique stature, both have similar sizes of towns boundaries, but Samoa I think is just a bit developed than Tonga in the sense of it's free democracy...but in few years time, Tonga will quickly develop in it's economical status...but I Love Samoa and Tonga much.. even though I'm. Fijian..love these two beautiful countries...

Vic Hands ..cos Fiji is a class of it's own...and don't degrade Tonga as you mistakes, cos Tonga and Samoa are similar in many ways... you are coming to the islands expect the unexpected, you will be a failure if you not prepare to expect.

Bula Simione, I am speaking from experience and if you haven't been to Tonga then you must go to see it yourself. We spend 4 nights in Fiji but I wish I got to see much of the local culture and village life but we loved our time in Fiji in the Mamanuca islands. I will definitely go back to Fiji and spend more times in Samoa to discover the big island of Savaii. All islands need to do clean up in the town area.. too many trash around.

No, New Zealand did not kick the German out. After the WW I, the League of Nations distributed all the German Pacific colonies. Japan got what is now Marshall Islands.

sdimas73 actually they did in 1914 at the start of the war as Samoa was part of the German Empire the British ordered NZ to confiscate Samoa as it was a threat to the British Empire in the Pacific after the war then the LON formally gave administration of Samoa to the British Empire under supervision of NZ
