Kate Winslet delivers one more excellent performance. As strong as her acting in 'The Reader'. I also noticed Saoirse Ronan's tendency to slip into her native Irish accent and even wondered if the character she played, Charlotte, was Irish. My only issue with this film is one of historical accuracy: I'm not sure Mary Anning was gay, she may well have been asexual.
I agree the sex scenes are disturbing and necessary because they express and give the film real emotional power. The film is a dramatically powerful cinematic experience almost like a Japanese Noh Drama whereby movement is slowed and emotion is conveyed through gesture and gaze and the position of each character in relation to each other.
You are right the sound design was amazing and worthy of the Coen Brothers.
It was SO effective! It wouldn't have been the same movie without it.

I think she’ll most certainly get nominated!
