This is an extended painting demonstration that will illustrate my process in a simple progression that you can apply to your paintings. I hope you enjoy it and try these tips out for yourself.
You are the best. The way you hold the brush, your hand not covering the painting, while you keep talking, the speed your painting is advancing, your voice, than at every step telling the mixing you are using. You are excellent.I learned a lot.Thank you!
I had forgotten how truly gifted you are as a teacher! Thank you for always explaining each move, decision, mark in such great detail and with humor and ease. Your easy going style makes the rest of us mortals feel like it is possible to achieve these results! Thank you! 😊
Thanks once again Malcolm! So lovely! I really appreciate the way you explain all along while painting. You really are an excellent teacher. There is, however, one thing that you do not say, and that is, that one also need courage to paint as loosely as you do. Personally, for example, I still struggle not to be "afraid" to "just put down the colors and leave them" with the result that I tend to overwork and thus spoiling my paintings. Thanks again. I am sure you will get through to me somehow one day.
Malcolm, you are such a find for my journey and rediscover of painting after many decades. The breakdown of using color and shapes and the relaxed, natural presentation style is superb. One of my issues is that when I try to follow a model or reference, it all ends up too loose.
Thank you so much for your explanations as you teach! The word “simplify” described exactly what I must try to do soon. I wish I would have had your expert advice a long time ago!
I love the colors in this! I like how you used cerulean blue in the distant hills instead of ultramarine. It gives a totally different feel with the slightly warmer cools.
As much as you enjoyed painting (as you said), I did watching even more! Alot of information, thank you for the valuable tips and inspiration. I will have to watch all over again. Thank you!
Great and exceptionatly informative. As usual many somethings to learn and pratice. I had to view this lesson a day late as a result of local power outages.....great non-the-less!! Thank you, Malcolm.
Thanks Malcolm for uploading the demonstration. Your process is as always so well executed, a pleasure to watch. I always, learn alot from all your video tutorials.
I was intrigued how you rarely cleaned your brush or hardly changed it. I’d love to try this but I feel this beyond my skill level at this moment. Thank you Malcolm, you are always very informative
You can do it! I do wipe the brush off with tissue or cloth every couple of strokes. Have a look at last week's video for more info on that - - the one about non-toxic medium. I do edit out these pauses in a recording to save viewers time.
I am a tight detailed painter and this demo is so helpful to see how to do a loose painting. I will definitely try to apply what you have shown to my next painting. Won't be easy b/c I really struggle to be loose.
thank you sp much for so generously sharing your knowledge end experience! I’m learning, so watching and reading a lot of info but your explanation of the process finally broke through my head understanding how things work!
Hi Malcom - really enjoy your demos and tutorials but it would be great if you could share the photo reference you are using in the comments. Thank you. Hilary
I love this little painting. I'm so afraid of contrast between dark and light, I'm always trying to fix it so the colors blend more in the same tone. I wish I could break that habit because yours look so beautiful and the contrast is what makes it so!
Thank you for your very helpful videos on oil painting, Malcolm. But I still have a big problem: What is the best way to store oil paintings while the layers are drying? Unlike acrylic paintings, after all, they stick and are not protected from dust deposits...
Thank you. Yes I have had the same struggle for years. The best solution is to place the paintings in racks in a cupboard to dry behind closed doors. A high shelf above a window for example can work too. any place out of the wind where dust etc blows around.
@@MalcolmDewey Thank you very much. It's really the biggest background reason for me to paint with acrylic paint instead of oil paint. I simply lack the space for storage during drying...
I have added this as a bonus video on the course Painting Trees and Light in Oils. You are already enrolled so login there and download the reference. Thank you

Glad you like it Miriam - cerulean is my fave blue, but cobalt is also amazing for those cool colors.
@@MalcolmDewey I’ll need to pick up some cobalt 😃
Thank you from snowy Ontario! Lots to inspire!

Hi Malcolm; Do you like Arches oil painting pater? Do you use this just for srudides for finished paintings, how do your frame? Thank you.
Yes it is good paper for studies. You can frame it behind glass or paste it to a panel and frame like regular oil paintings.
Hi Malcolm. I can't find any reference pictures to practice these techniques.☹
I have this lesson and references in my course Painting Trees and Light in Oils
Now do a big bold one, sell it for big bucks, your fantastic
I like the way you think 😄 Thank you!
Question... if i want to paint this in acrylics, is it the same structure in use of color? What else should i do?
Yes the same approach. Although I do not have cerulean blue in acrylics I use a similar sky blue.
HI Malcolm Is it possible to post your reference for us to paint from?
I have added this as a bonus video on the course Painting Trees and Light in Oils. You are already enrolled so login there and download the reference. Thank you
Plz, next time give a full demonstration in acrylic paint.
Will give that a go sometime
What time Eastern standard Time in the US? If unable to watch at that time, will it be on TH-cam afterwards?
