    Thanks for another video explaining why you are letting go of each item. Hearing your thought process helps me make better decisions when I’m decluttering. Congrats on letting go of 50 items!
    I also used to struggle with making myself floss daily. I decided to floss Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and that has worked for me for over a year now. Hope that is a helpful suggestion.
    God bless you! -Lisa

    When I upgraded my lunch bag and food storage containers from plastic to glass, I gave the containers and bag to a co-worker with children. I prefer to remove an item when I replace it to avoid clutter. She was happy to replace her old one.

    I always love your video's and learned a lot from them. But one thing in this video you said was that instead of buying people a gift for their birthday or the holidays, you give a donation in their name. I'm sorry, that's not a gift. Whatever you say, that's never a gift. I can understand that you don't want to spend money on gifts that end up in the back of a closet. But you can give in other ways to to let your loved ones know that you care about them. And in my opinion giving a donation to a charity is not one of them. Instead I would advice you to give them an experience. Go out with them, take them out to diner, go watch a movie together, visit a museum. That's a real gift. People will always forget the physicial gifts, but never forget experiences. As a 50 year old woman from the Netherlands, who has received a lot of gifts and experiences I would like to give you this advice. You can still give donations, but don't do it in other peoples name and present that as giving a gift for birthdays or holidays.

      scrappedlives great tip cause that is petty. I would be so salty if my sister, friend, mom, or cousin did that. Give me the money at least. Then I can save it or donate it or use it to buy groceries. Lol she can get them a grocery store gift card those are the best

    • @MusclesandBooks
      @MusclesandBooks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I'd have to disagree. For the past couple years I've requested that people donate in my name. I don't need anything more than what I already have.

    • @scrappedlives
      @scrappedlives 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Of course if you ask people to give a donation in your name that's your choice. But what I hear Sarah saying is that SHE does that. Nowhere she said that she did that because people asked her to. Only that she doesn't want to give a gift so she makes a donation in their name. So apparently the birthday boy or girl has no say in it. That's a big difference. And I love it when someone gives me an experience. I love being treated by a friend on coffee with a big piece of pie, or like for my 50th birthday that my husband had booked a trip to Croatia. I will never forget that. All the fun things you do with family and friends, that's what I remember, not the gifts. And there is nothing more special then a friend taking the time to spend time with you and give that as a gift. We are all so busy these days, that's a real treat.

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for your feedback. I have a gift-related video coming up at the end of the month that will allow viewers to see more of how this particular policy evolved over time and give more context for it, since the gift giving procedure is not fully explained in this video! Stay tuned! :)

    I love this video! I do keep things decluttered but there is so much more I could get rid of, especially in clothes, but if I did get rid of worn jeans or used old socks and undies for cleaning, I still need those things. And with our low income, there is no money to buy replacements. We definitely are using it up, and keeping things to a minimum. And I have a question. ..we share a laundry room in our apartment building also. How often do you do laundry and how much do you spend? I can easily go through $40 a month for 2 people and to me that's way too much, even with wearing some clothes twice before washing.. Thanks for your answer in advance and keep doing the declutter videos, love them!

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad you love the video, Vicki! About your laundry question, I admit, I wear my clothing a lot before washing it. We spend about $15 on laundry per month for 2 people...$2.50 total per load of laundry and we do 5-6 loads per month (although it's mostly Jake's clothing). I will honestly wear shirts about 3-4 times before washing, pants about 10 times before washing, and other items a bunch as well...underwear and socks are the only things I wash after one wear. I hope that helps!

    I only give donations as a gift if the recipient asks for it. Which has happened once for Secret Santa where the person puts in their name and three suggestions. When the website asks for the recipient’s address, I put in mine and then they don’t bug the recipient with junk mail. I am diligent about getting off the mailing list.

    I hate to say it but one book here and one magazine there is almost humorous. I can’t imagine a household where those two items would make a difference. Almost every teacher I know holds onto things with the future purpose of using them in the classroom.

    Thanks for sharing your declutter. I just went though my closet and dresser drawers and got rid of 5 boxes! I got rid of clothes that were too big (have lost 35 pounds) which was a little scary. Felt like I was giving up my security net (can't gain it back now..lol). Also, got rid of things that do fit but I just did not like or wear...odd the mix of emotions that came up... I am also committing to purchasing any new items I need second hand whenever possible and only when needed. Decluttering just the closet and dresser really showed me the excess in my life. One person should not have 5 boxes of clothes they can give away.

    Hi Sarah! Great video. Definitely gave me some ideas on decluttering. I stopped taking promotional products ever since I got into zero/low waste. It’s just so unnecessary! I had so many random knick knacks like koozies, pens, usb sticks, notepads/notebooks, reusable bags, and so on.. it’s just gna end up in the trash :/ btw, I wanted to ask.. how did you get rid of your underwear? I always feel bad for throwing old undies in the trash and definitely feel weird using it as a rag. Have you tried recycling it at places that recycle clothes? I know h&m recycles clothes so I might try doing that.. thanks!

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment! A lot of larger donation centers will recycle clothing that they don't deem fit for selling. In this case, I included these items as part of my donation. I hope that helps!

      I've taken worn out clothes to h&m to be recycled in the past. It was easy.
      I used to live in a town that did hazardous waste recycling, and they took textiles, too, so maybe see if your city does something like that.

    Great video. Watched with great intent.
    Who is the J-dude you mention severally?
    I stayed at a hotel suit- long term stay suite, with kitchenette, office, and pantry. You know the kind. The suite has basic basic basic needs pre-appointed, basic pots and pans and cutlery, iron, sofa and other seating, all basic. A few weeks there and I realized how much joy the basic and minimalist appointments brought to me. I didn’t miss MY TV, MY SOFA, MY THINGIMADOODLES. A spoon is a spoon.
    Made me realize there is just such debilitating over abundance of possessions in our lives.
    (Curious: are you also decluttering all the “g”’s from word endings? “Long” not “lon”. If this is a cultural/ identity, or impediment related attribute, my apologies. Not meaning to be mean, just mean to be meaningful.)

    • @AbundantlyMinimal

    Is vegan leather plastic?

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a big range! Some of it is made of pineapple or mushroom, others plastic/polyurethane, and I'm sure others I don't even know about!

    The worn elastic is an easy fix. Just measure and buy the elastic - you can hand tack it and probably for a dollar replace it.

    Vegan shoes as in plant based? Cause if not, filling the planet with plastic and rubber shoes is way less sustainable than real leather, which eventually decomposes.

    • @ninacooper260
      @ninacooper260 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Leather doesn't decompose if it's tanned with synthetic dyes (which most leather these days is). Only vegetable tanned leather would fully decompose and only if it wasn't sent to a landfill (which has a plastic lining anyway and is very anaerobic so bad for decomposition).

      Animal products are so insanely unsustainable, the single worst thing for the environment that we do. So the vegan option is always more sustainable plus not buying dead body parts makes sense in general

    I love the idea of an 'anti-haul' why would you get rid of that title?

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm glad to love the anti-haul title! The honest truth is that there are way fewer people searching for anti-hauls than for decluttering videos, so this video received more than 5 times the views as my anti-hauls, even though the video content is literally the same. This way I can reach more people! :)

    You could donate makeup samples to a women's shelter and not waste the product and the packaging it came in.

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a great idea, Nikki! The ones mentioned in the video were over five years old, however, and many make-up items are not as safe or effective at the point of expiration, so I wouldn't want to cause harm to those already going through a lot!

    • @astgoddess
      @astgoddess 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Abundantly Minimal Oh! I didn't know how old they were! Depending on the product and also how it's stored and if it's ever been opened to the air before, it can last for a while but 5 years is a long time. I try to think of all ways to prevent myself from wasting. I am big on recycling or having someone else use the items I get rid of, but decluttering is very difficult for me.

    I think that leather is more sustainable than vegan plastic like material.

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there are pros and cons. I have found some actual leather does last longer (only items that are purchased secondhand), but production of synthetic leather is better for the environment than traditional leather in a few different ways. I included a chart that has a good breakdown of these: www.ethicalgallery.com.au/blogs/ethical-gallery-blog/the-environmental-impact-of-animal-leather-vs-faux-leather

  • @dotdedo
    @dotdedo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When buying vegan leather make sure its not faux, which is just plastic and harming the environment. If you can't find any non plastic leathers then its better for the environment to just buy real leather without added materials and chemicals.

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, actual leather does also require chemicals in its processing, specifically chromium in the tanning phase. I first learned about this in the documentary, the True Cost. This is also causing negative health effects for those who produce leather. You may find the documentary interesting.

      I think these arguments come down to your personal values, and what you would prefer to use, for example I'm uncomfortable with the idea of wearing skin so the best option for me is to buy high quality vegan leather shoes ( there are some very long lasting high quality cellulose-rich vegan leathers, not just the fake bin/trash-bag stuff found on the budget market) that I can get re-soled and repaired, so they will last a very long time. If I bought leather, even second hand, it wouldn't be worn. However, for those comfortable with that option perhaps the best options would be having second hand leather shoes repaired for less environmental impact, as it makes use of a resource already in the economic system and reduces the rate of nasty chemicals going into landfill. If those shoes were made from leather treated in a more eco-friendly way even better . Ultimately, better options are being released into the market every day and it's only a matter of time before less environmentally damaging options become the norm, it's a waiting game.
