Stopping porch pirates: Man invents box to protect packages from thieves

- CINCINNATI (WKRC) - 'Tis the season for holiday deliveries--and porch pirates.
But one local man thinks he may have a solution to help with an invention that may secure your packages.
These days a lot of people have invested in surveillance cameras. But now, there's the option of a lock box--big enough for your deliveries and harder for thieves to get into.
When a Norwood family got a package delivered, a thief helped himself to it first. David Spatholt was home when his surveillance system caught a man stealing from his porch.
"I looked down at my phone and I saw that there was somebody running up the steps and snatching a package and running off," he said.
Someone found the package in a neighbor's bushes--a delivery for the couple's newborn.
"I think that's kind of the product of when you're having people deliver a bunch of large boxes to the front of your door...there's going to be that opportunity where some people are going to take advantage of it," Spatholt said.
It happens more frequently because more people shop online. Bobby Vires came up with his own solution for the problem: A drop box that's secured to his home.
"The driver puts the packages in here, closes the lid, locks it," he explained. "My wife and I order a lot of packages online, and we had some instances when we had some packages that were missing."
Vires has a sign on the door that tells the delivery person to put packages inside. The box is made from recycled milk jugs by the Amish in Peebles. So far, it's been working for Bobby, so he's selling them.
"We are developing a box that will have a bar code inside that a delivery person can scan, and we can have a verified delivery," Bobby said.
Vires is hoping this holiday season fewer people will have to report porch pirates.
"It's providing a service of protecting our packages from theft, wind, rain. We're employing people locally," he said.
Vires is also working on a refrigerated drop box. That way, if people get groceries delivered, they'll be protected from weather and thieves.
My husband gets so many deliveries in one day that we would have to have a lockbox the size of a dang minibarn.

No good in our neighborhood, they never read the signs i put up. Always in a rush.
Am I the only one who doesn't understand why delivery people leave packages where they're visible? Anytime I'm getting a package I leave a note on the front door instructing them to either leave it behind a shrub I have that's about 10 feet from my door or just have them put it inside the door to my backyard. Either way it's completely invisible from anybody walking or driving by. It would solve 99% of these type of thefts.

Boxes may work or may not. Thieves will find a way to get packages. I am either home when the package is dropped off, or I go to a pickup place to get them. Cameras do nothing to stop package thieves. They only help if someone rings your doorbell looking for something or to break in.

This only works if the delivery person follows the directions & most don't.
I'd have one made in the form of a bench, with armrests and a cushion that you can bolt to the porch floor. Only I'd have it made of 1/8" steel with a heavy bolt lock. Practically bullet proof.
Pretty sure there's nothing bullet proof about 1/8" steel. Even ballistic steel. But really most thieves aren't going to try more than a few seconds. Wood can stop them pretty easily.
I live in a small town and never had this problem and no one els has that i know of .

I just cannot believe something like this could happen in one of the richest countries. I can see people stealing from someone's porch in a poor country but the USA? What goes wrong?

the only packages I get "stolen" are the stupid Amazon drivers delivering my packages to the wrong house and too untrusting neighbors.
My problem is they don't knock. My package was just stolen and we were home! All he had to do was knock. But by the time we got the notification that it was delivered and seen the picture of it outside my door, it was gone. I think the driver took a picture than took it with him. Think it's time to invest in a Ring

@@JFG_III completely forgot about those 😅 I was looking to invest in a Parcel box but some run up to 250$ If you need something for larger packaging. I'll have to remember to use the lockers next time I plan on ordering something valuable. Thank you!

I am sure thieves could lock the box before the package is delivered, then come by later and steal the package off of the top of the drob box.

Your box is not a solution for most people because it can only accept one delivery. It has to be accessed by the homeowner and reset before it can accept the next delivery. A lot of people receiving multiple deliveries are people that operate a small business from their homes. This isn't a new story until you devise a box that can be accessed multiple times without any attention between deliveries. It must be secure and super fast and simple for the delivery carrier to access. No expensive electronics or smart phone apps required. .....and it needs to be smaller than a Buick!

@@kaspr79 I think a simple solution to prevent package pirating is for the delivery person if he comes and nobody is home is to simply take the package back to the post office and leave a notice for the recipient about the package. The recipient of the package simply has to go to the post office to pick up the package.

I don't understand how these delivery guys are all gonna have the keys for the drop box to put the deliveries in if Iam not home lmaooo ???? I wouldn't give the damn key out. What are they gonna do just stick the packages in the box with no lock for someone to take before I come home to get it out 😔 ?,
I guess it's open, and when you put the boxes inside you push the lock and it locks and then only the owner can unlock.
You do understand that just because a device has a lock that it doesnt have to be locked, right?
Set up booby trapped decoy boxes. That'll make bandits think twice.

just put phone books in the boxes so the thieves can take them.

well i can understand the box for parcels but the food locker is dumb. if you can not go food shopping then why would you shop for food on line or call to your local store and then leave to go somewhere? you should know your food is on the way and here in about a half hour to a hour!

Most places have many delivery drivers. If this catches on, I don't think they're all going to carry keys for everyone's house.

This dude didn't invent anything. Lock boxes have been around since Moses wore short pants. The Blank Box, now thats a new invention and will cause the porch pirate to sh!t themselves.
INVENTS a box with a lock......pretty sure I had one of those in school when I was 8....anyway I would imagine the first time a porch pirate got stiffed he'd put something nasty in your box and lock it tight ......for you to open.
