    You may be one of the few people that have the amazing ability to make a $70 bass sound like a $5000 bass.
    I, however, have the uncanny ability to make a $5000 bass sound like a $70 bass!

    One of the most brutal lessons I've learned since I first took up the bass in 1973, is that it's not the bass so much as the player. I encourage everyone to be able to set the neck and bridge up. That's the missing link to making a lower priced bass sound much better than its price tag suggests. Live every note, my friends.

Nowadays, just as he shows with the Ammoon, the inexpensive guitars are much better than they used to be. The difference between then and now is dramatic. Certainly in a noisy venue, with Scott playing, no one in the audience would complain about his sound on the $100 bass.

    Edit: glad my ear is as good as I think it is, however I’m impressed with the amoon. My decision wasn’t made based on quality, but strictly sound texture. Of course, Scott is a great example of a player making the sound and not the gear.

    Cosmetically, the Amoon is't horrible looking considering how inexpensive it was.
    First impression of the Fodera - very pretty to look at, but WAY too many control knobs, etc. for me. I like the idea of a high "C" and a drop tuner on the "E" string instead of a low "B".
    I chose Amoon as bass 1 and Fodera as bass 2. And holy crap, I was right. Ha!!

      The controls are mostly for active mode. If you want to go passive, it's pretty easy to deal with. They document it as well and it's pretty straightforward, giving you treble, mid, bass controls, pickup blend, and volume/tone on knobs with cut for tuner, active/passive, and split switches (split if you've got the dual coils). Love mine and the controls really don't get in the way.

    I've had many bases over the last 40 years. My all time favorite is my Ibanez GI0 5 string paired with a 1975 Epiphone solid state amp. I picked up the pair for the princely sum of $60. The bass needed a good set up, and I replaced all the capacitors in the amp and got rid of the death cap. It's a most excellent combo and the only one I play any more.
    It's not about the dollars you spend, its about how the instrument "fits" you and how it feels to the soul when you play it.

    I play an absolute piece of hammered dog shit for a bass. I played 10 bucks for it from some crackhead musician in the parking lot of a pawn shop that wouldn't even give him a penny for it. That was 10 years ago. It's a Peavy bass, wood grain, but its built like a brick shithouse. It sounds phenomenal, and it's still going strong. Probably the best purchase I've ever made. It's like buying that cheap ass beat up 300 buck honda grocery getter with 400k miles on it that will NOT die.....a decade later.....still goin at it....only intended to get you thru a winter. Rolando Balladares It does sound the best bass in the universe and it’s marketed towards the player who plays for a living, so it playing itself would take all of the fun out of owning such an amazing instrument. • @nickchittum7548
      @nickchittum7548 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Márk N. Mészáros That is true. But I did hear a considerable difference between the two basses. Of course an almost $10,000 gap would mean a large difference in sound but even when you get to the higher prices in basses the differences in quality are subtle but a master musician can hear and feel it.

    • @slapittywapitty8173
      @slapittywapitty8173 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Anyone hear $10,850 - worth of difference?

    • @yeoldefoxeh254
      @yeoldefoxeh254 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@slapittywapitty8173 nope. What I hear is mostly the pickups and perhaps the fretboard. Because of this, and the fact that as Scott also says in the video the type of electronics is completely different, this comparison video is extremely biased. It would have been a fair fight with a proper, similarly built bass which costs about a few thousand more. Still, I think we are still talking by each other. I never said that the extremely expensive bass have no different sound, I said that there is no point in spending that much (not to mention the fact that not many able to in the first place), even if you are a gigging musician because the price level is not in par with the sound it can produce. The sound of that Ammoon (£80) is obviously very different from even a £300 bass. But that £300 bass will not have that same gap with a £1200. So if you have a £1000-1200 bass properly set up, plugged in a proper gear and you have the proper technique, you can easily overplay that 11k bass. The difference is there mainly because of the way they differ, not because of their price.

    I got an electric bass at Netto (before Wal Mart extinguished it) for only £70. It was in a clearance shopping cart.
    I can't fault it. The intonation is perfect and the build is sturdy. It has a nice, round bass sound, not that harsh buzz sound. Its altissimo harmonics are good, too.

      Agreed. #2 was punchier and more responsive sound, had a more rounded (less hollow) tone, it had a better voice (clearer, less quiet). It wasn't a surprise at all. And yes, you can set up a cheap instrument well and it can be wonderful. But I do believe there is a limit to "how cheap" varies of course to the usage.Need a banger to smash during your nirvana cover band concert? cheap-o will could do well. To dive somewhat deep, I played guitar in a metal band in high school, circa 1995. I overdrove all my rhythm sounds through loud amps that it didn't matter what guitar I was playing. In today world locked up at home with the virus, I've bought a digital recorder and have been working rhythm, lead, bass, and drums. I bought a 6-string Ibanez for less than $400, depending which amp, it sounds great. It is active, but I feel I can remove the active part and use the amp to recreate the sound. So my point being, depending on the amp, pedal, processor, or cabinet replicator settings, you can almost make anything sound the way you want it. That being said, the action, neck, frets... all lead to the actual playability of the instrument. I've had an American Strat for over 20 years, it was mid-priced when I bought it. I have a Flying V bought recently, which was mid-priced when I bought it. This year I bought a Chinese Spirit by Stienberger for $400. It plays and sounds great. It's the through system sound of the whole rig that really matters in the end.
    And as mentioned earlier, if it is set up correctly. But it is not the components, if put together well, that will make an instrument sound poorly.
    End story, cheap instruments can sound good. I'm digging my sub $400 6-string Ibanez. I hate to say that, along with the sound, I really dig the look unpainted, but stained wood look. For cheap.

    Bass 1 had a cheaper sound to it. When playing I was able to hear a distinct sound coming from the strings vibrating on the frets, like a clank if you will, while bass 2 sounded more clear. I can't give a better explanation to what I mean with that distinct sound other than a very subtle clank, but I hope you know what I mean.

    • @achilles872
      @achilles872 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's mostly down to the playing and how you have your bass set up. You can pretty much totally eliminate that by making the action on the strings higher, though many people choose not to, as when slapping, they want this percussive sound.

  • @BassForever44
    @BassForever44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Not even if I had tons of disposable money I’d buy a bass as ridiculously priced as a Fodera. There are plenty of half priced basses that can do and are finished as a Fodera. When buying Fodera, half the price is the sponsorship of all the bass giants they endorse 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @BassForever44
      @BassForever44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And for all beginners out there: you don’t need an expensive bass to sound good, not even pros need them, what a beginner needs to sound good is have proper technique... so no worries about having money for just a cardboard bass ! 😉

    • @BassForever44
      @BassForever44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. If one still wants better sound without having to shell 10 grand, go for a change in electronics. I’d even dare saying that wood choice influence on sound is negligible, what really makes the difference is the pick ups, so no need for unpronounceably named exotic woods either, that’s just for “bling”.

    • @bleromafia

      @jackieclark8253 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BassForever44 ...that's not exactly true. Pickups only amplify what's already there...if the bass has crappy tone,the pickups don't turn it into some incredible instrument...much like a horrible sounding doesn't sound much better with a top brand microphone.it may improve a little but, not that much.

    On the cheapest bass, you can hear that there is a bit of 'metal' noise, a bit more at the very end of the test, don't know if thats the strings or the bass, but you can hear a noise. the sound on the Fodera is more melodic in my opinion!
    great test, not much difference between the 2, that prouve that you can have a good sound on a cheap bass, just put the right tone on your amp and good balance!
    Great video! :D

    I picked up a Rogue SX (90$ new) to leave at the practice space so I didn't have to worry about it getting stolen. I was playing on a ampeg br2 head with a mesa 610 cab with a blown speaker and always got asked by other bands what equipment I was using and that it sounds awesome lol. It actually does sound good though. To put it in perspective I also have a couple Carvin basses and an Ernie Ball musicman stingray. I actually like the Rogue just as much.
    Cheap basses are pretty good these days. The finish quality will more than likely be sub par but the playability is fine.

      you're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, of course a Fodera is the dream bass, but quality/price ratio is laughable... I play the synth and it's the same with Nord synths, they are indeed very good but they cost three times more than other synths that have nothing to eny them... I guess the brand plays a huge part in this

    • @digi7altrauma792
      @digi7altrauma792 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this is a case of diminishing returns. I wouldn't pull the trigger on any bass or guitar over $800 unless I'd die without it.
      In my experience, the 300-600 range is very competitive and hard to beat. Will a $400 epiphone thunderbird bass sound as good as a $1600-$2k gibson thunderbird? Oh hell no.... But want to know what I bought and have owned happily for 15 years? The fit and feel was different, but not 1500+ different. Nor was the sound.. about a 100 bucks for new soapbars... and that difference in sound is now non existent.And when it took a head dive into the floor? No tears from me... neck was good... but it did pick up a new dent (read as character).
      But I don't think the amazon guitar would cause me to even like it. The sound is.... lackluster to say the least and I'm positive it feels as cheap as the price tag.
      $70 dollar amazon special vs a $200 squire? I gotta go with the squire all the way.
      $70 amazon guitar, vs my ~$500 Agile Legacy 727 Oceanburst.... yeah... amazon lost again.
