There isn't enough time in the day to read absolutely everything! I'm only just reading through Sandman now, and I only just read Maus earlier this year. I've not read Bone or Usagi Yojimbo yet!

Me at the start of this video: The notion that someone isn't a "part of the community" because they haven't read enough comics is pretty stupid. Comic fandom should be inclusive, not exclusive.
Me after seeing #1 on this list: WHAT?! How can you even call yourself a comic fan?!

You want to read one of the greatest graphic novels of all-time?? Then grab a copy of
"Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph & Torment" from the late 1980s. This little
gem tells the tale of Strange & Doom, joining forces to combat the legions of hell, in
order to free Doom's mother's soul from the clutches of Mephisto. It's written by classic
Spider-Man scribe; Roger Stern, along with art by the amazing Mike Mignola. This might
very well be the greatest work Mignola has ever done on any work. This is a brilliant story of
lost love, redemption, honor, fantasy, and spectacle. I promise you; once you've read it, you'll keep
coming back to it over and over again. A timeless classic.

I'm a die-hard Sandman fan. Most days of the week, the series is my favorite comic, full stop. That said, I have some thoughts for you.
When I first read the early volumes as a teen, Sandman didn't blow me away. It was only as I revisited the series over the years and found the stories in it more fresh and exciting over time that my appreciation of Sandman grew to the point it is today. Odds are good, you're not going to be bowled over on your first read-through. So, let that go. Even if you don't understand a lot of the history and mythology Neil Gaiman weaves into the issues, Sandman is a fun read. Waiting to be wowed is going to ruin a lot of that fun.
You don't need to read the whole thing from end-to-end either. Sandman is a patchwork of stories and there's lots of good places to hit the pause button and pick up something else and revisit the series later.
Speaking for my own overlooked books, I've read only a third of Bone - planning to pick it up again and read the rest sometime soon. Also, I've barely read *anything* by Grant Morrison (just Arkham Asylum) - I have a lot of their books on my shelf, but I haven't gotten to them yet :(

I’m a huge Gath Ennis fan and all I can say about it right now is that you’re not missing a whole lot. There are some things in it that have marred my overall enjoyment of it.

Off the top of my head, the ones I feel most like I personally should have had a go at reading by now are:
    Maus
    Blacksad
    Preacher
    The Invisibles
    Sin City
    Strangers in Paradise
Pretty much everything by Alan Moore except Watchmen
A million acclaimed Marvel/DC runs, both older and modern
I'm also currently only part way through the following:
    Invincible
    TMNT (IDW run)
    Power Rangers
There's no shame in it though! I know I'll get around to reading the ones that most interest me someday. You can't help what you feel in the mood to read!

Hi I’m subscribed to your channel because your videos are so entertaining! I had to write after this video because I was laughing so hard; not at you mate but with you!!! I am soooo in the same boat as you! I have purchased so many books that I have not read as well (locke and key, 100 bullets, etc). But the ultimate is Sandman!!! Yes Sandman!!I bought the first omnibus and starting reading it thinking I’m going to read the most glorious epic. 25% of the way in I’m like what?!?!?! I put it down and hope hat the urge to read it again will overcome me and I will ploughing thru it. Like you I want to be entertained when reading comics. I found myself saying “why am I reading this?” So I knew it was time I put it down.
Overall, keep up the great work. You have a great channel and your enthusiasm is contagious.
BTW there are only 2 channels I watch in collected editions yours and (you know who-the great Omar!!!!).

I only started reading Usagi Yojimbo recently and it's great. You will live it when you get the chance to get in to. It.

Hey! Being a huge fan of your number 1 pick...I would recommend one thing...just get on with it.
Don't 'prepare' for it. Don't think you will miss out on how 'ideally' you should experience it if you aren't well prepared for it.
Trust me. The more you 'prepare' for it, the less enjoyable it will be. Just go all guns blazing with no base understanding and follow the order of the releases.
The best experience of this masterpiece is with no baseline.
I hope you will and I will be looking forward for a review from you about it in the near future man!

The Sandman is probably my favorite long-running comic book series. Some big deal series I have started but not finished are Frank Miller & Klaus Jansen’s Daredevil, Steve Ditko & Stan Lee’s Spider-Man and Jack Kirby & Stan Lee’s Fantastic Four. I will probably restart these all at some point and finish them now that I have all the omnibuses readily at my fingertips. Right now I am in the middle of a big X-Men read and I want to at least get all the way through Claremont’s run. The last issue I read was 219, but I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus to read a couple other things.
One of the things I’ve been looking at on this hiatus is the Crisis on Infinite Earths box set, which has so far been near unreadable. I’ve read the first 6 books in the set (Crisis on Multiple Earths 1-6) and they are almost completely gibberish. I feel like my brain hasn’t even been absorbing the material and I have fallen asleep more than once while trying to power through it. I’m finally about to start reading the main 12-issue maxi-series and if it isn’t good, I probably will not finish the boxset and just sell it or something. It might be a case of this supplemental pre-crisis material being horrible and the actual series being better and actually worth reading (God, I hope so.)

Hey man, loving the content and the channel! I really recently like a week ago decided to try get into comics now that I'm an adult and have time and cash to invest into the hobby and your channel has been my go to so far!
I have two questions that maybe you or your community might be able to help me with, firstly is there an app that I can use to track what comics in an arc I've read and what I should be reading next or whats the best way to do so?
Secondly, is there an order or logical path I should be taking as I start reading? ATM I'm working through Jason Aarons 2018 avengers arc and picking up the odd single issue story such as three jokers to read on the side but is there a more fluid or structured method I should be using?
    Cheers

Our time and taste are precious to each one of us. I have read Watchmen but I really loved Top Ten. I have read Dark Knight but I really liked Batman Year One... I liked parts of Preacher but if someone told me to read it again, no thank you, cool moments, was OK but not crazy about it, so what... Does that make it a bad comic, of course not. It was maybe my age or expectations or if I have read it today I might have been a fanatic about it... and I have heard so much about Preacher... In the first lockdown on Corona Virus I finally read (on my computer, could not afford or find the volumes of) Lone Wolf and Cub, I have heard so much about it and I really loved it, it was epic and what more or less I imagined it to be. I was literally crying in the end and a couple more times during my read... JUST ENJOY YOUR CHOICES PEOPLE AND IF NOT, NO PROBLEM, DON'T FEEL GUILTY OR ANYTHING, WE DON'T HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD FOR EVERYTHING, LIFE HAPPENS, CHOOSE SOMETHING ELSE... Just one small advice... read, listen, do what you love, just once in a while choose something different of your norm, beautiful and life changing stuff is there!

No shame in admitting you haven't read everything, Marcus. Discussing comic secret shames is one of my favorite things to do with people in the hobby. To my own shames, I'm with you. I've owned and read the first Sandman tpb for years but didn't ever read the rest of the series. Last year I finished the first absolute (so through issue 20) but I still haven't read past there. I’ve only read vol 1 of Sandman which I liked. I bought vol 2 but many say that it’s very different. I hope I like it. I haven’t read most of the Marvel books, I mostly read DC. Maybe the biggest DC I haven’t read is New Frontier.

  • @CraigGrannell
    @CraigGrannell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

First, I wholeheartedly agree with that self-appointed gatekeeper rot some people spew. That notion of “You can’t be a fan of X until you’ve experienced Y” needs to get in the sea. So great to you countering that poison right off the bat. But it is interesting to see your list, given the size of your collection.
I’m a fan of Calvin and Hobbes and my nipper loves it too. Some of the references will be lost on Brits (and also younger folks), but it’s sweet and imaginative. Really smartly written and endlessly imaginative. If you don’t want to splurge on the HC set (which is lovely), you can always test the waters with a treasury for next to nothing.
But: Usagi Yojimbo! I think given that you were one of the very lucky few to get that second print of volume one, you at least owe it to the world to read though that! :D Again, I love this series. Wonderful storytelling. Great art. Yeah, it's anthropomorphic animals, but I don’t care. So is Maus. So is Wild’s End. And, frankly, it’s not like spandex-clad superheroes are especially more relatable!
As for hype, I totally get that. Too often, media comes with expectations about wowing people attached. Thing is, as we age and experience new things, those expectations can be derailed, eroded or subverted. I had much the same happen with Watchmen. I read it, but it didn’t really hit me. I got the feeling you had to be there at the time (see also: early punk music). And on Sandman: I recall liking it and am happily buying the new deluxe editions to replace by trades. But if I had to reduce my own personal collection, it’d be some way down the list, some way behind Usagi Yojimbo, Hellboy, Saga, and others.
So not all of us comics fans put it on a pedestal. Maybe you can go and read it now! ;D

I understand not wanting to read something because it might not live up to the hype. Sandman was the same for me so I only got the first omnibus but I was really impressed and then picked up the other two. Fantastic storytelling.

Bone was the first comic series I read. I recently reread it and it still holds up. It's an excellent fantasy comic and an excellent independent comic.

    Sheriff of Babylon

    Sweet tooth
    Promethea
    Fear Agent
Really need to get it together with vertigo titles haha!!
P.s I'm gonna put £1 in a jar every time you say "I'm not a manga guy" and book a holiday next summer with the funds!👍😁

I've never read any of those 20 either.
I want to read Sandman, Doom Patrol, thought about picking up Bone a few times way back, big Superman fan but not really interested in SFASeason.
The others maybe I will some day maybe not.

Fun topic, but you don't NEED to read anything if you don't want to, no shame in not having read any of those. Just read what you find interesting or think you will enjoy the most, not what others order you to read. From your list, Bone and Locke & Key are fast and easy reads that's actually two of my personal greatest of all time. Also, you don't need to read a full book if you don't enjoy it. Kill or Be Killed and Low are two books I started to read that EVERYONE loves, but after a few issues I couldn't stand any of them, but that doesn't make me less of a comic fan :) I haven't read Watchmen, Preacher or Sandman, because I have a limited budget and buy what I think I will enjoy the most, not what others order me to buy. If I had unlimited amount of money or could buy books as cheap as in the US, then I would probably get those at some point, but then there's another factor, time and that's not unlimited either, so I read what I want, can afford and have time to read, nothing more, nothing less.

Don`t feel bad about having a back-log. Most collectors do .The truth is that so many masterpieces created in the past & current creators are producing even more. We`re 83 years & counting into this thing. My personal list include some pretty big & important titles :
    1. The Authority ( I have the Omni )
    2. Planetary ( again, I own the Omni )
    3. Metabarons ( own the Omni )
    4. Midnight Nation ( own the library edition )
    5.The Sheriff Of Babylon
    And that`s just the start.

Bone for me was an easy read. Never got bored at any point so I think I read it in one or two sitting. The opposite was Watchmen. I think I made about 4or 5 attempts to read it but my mind just kept wandering at about page 20 or less. I would put it down and think I 'll try it later maybe I just wasn't in the mood. After the th or 5th try, I just lost interest in going back to it.

I Don't hate you, just a bit disappointed - lol. Having said that there were at least two books on your list I haven't read either. Sandman for me was a grower, picked up the firt issue off the shelf 30 years ago. Monthly it grew and developed. Reading the omnibuses might be a bit overwhelming. Sadly hype can actually destroy one's liking of a "classic" book. There is no excuse for not reading Bone - when I worked in a comic store I CHAMPIONED Bone and also Strangers in Paradise (another MUST read book). Incidently Jeff Smith cites Calvin & Hobbes as one of his influences. I lurve C&H - I have the complete collection box set - which I have read at least three times. You won't be disappointed with it. Calvin is the child in all comic collectors. Don't procrastinate too long, read them as fast as you can and get some immense satisfaction and enjoyment when you do. I admire your bravery with your confessions, not sure I would have done the same. Another good video Marcus.

Great video mate we all have are own things we like to read and tastes so I wouldn’t say it’s bad if you haven’t read certain titles but really Bone is mandatory

Never heard of the book 300. Read some of Lock and Key. Gave that to a friend as a gift No interest in reading Doom Patrol. Not a fan of Morrison. Heard and saw that samurai rabbit but never read it. Not a fan of Turtles. 100 Bullets bis cool. Gritty. Falls off at end. Very long. Boys comic is 🗑️ nasty and gross. Makes fun of superheroes. He hates them. Tv series is so much better. Your channel is mad cool

Jeff Smith’s Bone is absolutely fantastic! 😄 like yourself I also own the one volume edition which I read from cover to cover in one sitting it’s just that good.
All in all there’s definitely a LOTR epic scale style overarching story to the title whilst simply being a very breezy easy & fun read with a very cartoony art style. 🦴🐉🔥
