Very beautiful compound! I bet it must have smelled nice too (both reagents and product) :)
I'm remembering my first claisen condensation in orgo 2 lab. We had to grind our reagents together with a mortar and pestle (with pellets of NaOH), and the floral scents were very satisfying throughout the entire procedure.

Nice straightforward synth. Did you do a melting point to see if it matches the literature value? Under basic conditions sometimes acetone will polymerize with itself, giving you several possible products (most of which seem to be yellow). A TLC plate spotted with a small amount of the product could show if you have a mixture of products.

Thank you so much. I somehow f**ed this one up in my OC internship yesterday and I didnt know why. No i see that it was added to fast and the temp went to high.

Hi what were the concentrations of the reagents used?

Thank your for the explanation. From what substances will be removed if we further purify the product by doing recrystallization?

Hello, I have some questions concerning this manipulation. After having made my water + NaOH mixture I have to wait for my solution to cool down before adding the ethanol which will allow the benzaldehyde to be solubilised. Why wait for it to cool down? Then after adding the ethanol, I have to add a mixture of benzaldehyde and acetone in two steps while maintaining a temperature record between 20-25 degrees. Why keep this reaction at this temperature?

If you used half the benzaldehyde would it create methyl benzyl ketone?

Did this exact synthesis in an OChem Lab

    Why is dibenzalaceton yellow

Because it absorbs light in violet region.
