    I’ve got the 1005. Love it. The mid EQ makes the Barts work. Been my primary player for a few weeks and makes my Fenders/Stingray seem like lead weights.

      Glad you're liking yours! I appreciate the quality and value of the 1000 series so much. You're right about the EQ. Compared to other active basses I've had with barts (old Lakland 55-02 that I had 14-15 years ago) with other preamps, the preamp in the EHB really squeezes the tones out of em.

    IMO, the EHB series basses are the best basses Ibanez released recently.

  • @LunatiqueRob

    I was really looking forward to this video, but the main thing I was hoping for was to see you try and dial the EHB1005MS's EQ to make it sound like the EHB1505MS. This is important because for many folks, it's mainly the pickups that differentiate the two basses, and many said they preferred the Nordstrands over the Bartolinis. However, because the variable mid-frequency is so flexible, it is theoretically possible to dial the EHB1005MS's EQ so it sounds very close to the EHB1505MS. If that is the case, folks can relax and just by the cheaper model because they can get a similar sound as the more expensive model. I hope you'll make a video specifically to attempt this.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Hey Rob! Great comment. However, you're approaching this from the wrong direction. Can these basses sound a like? Yes, but you're talking about a very specific and narrow tonal middle ground between these two instruments. The preamps are the same, which allow for the same level of frequency boosting/cutting, but the impact of the different pickups is extremely evident through my testing. The nordstrands have a lot more tonal clarity in the higher frequency range and a lot more growl to them. The arrangement of the magnets and coils in the pickups are very different as well (rails vs poles, coil configs, etc). The way you're approaching this is like comparing a Jeep Wrangler and a Porsche 911 in a school zone at 20 mph, and saying we can theoretically get them to perform the same. Yes, they can both go through a school zone at 20 mph, but each of them has a wide variety of abilities outside of that context which have a much larger impact on perceived value to a potential owner. Just like with that example, you can't just look at both basses through the narrow lens of tonal overlap when both of these basses have tons of flexibility and valuable attributes outside of that.

    • @LunatiqueRob
      @LunatiqueRob 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LowEndLobster I get where you're coming from.
      I know a lot of people who despite owning active basses, will mainly only use it in passive mode (if it has an active/passive switch), and even on active only basses, often just leave the EQ flat. This is why I suggested using the EHB1005MS's EQ to make its Bartolinis sound like the EHB1505MS's default Nordstrand tone. For those people, that's all they need to know, to happily get the EHB100X series and know they can get the same tone as the more expensive Nordstrands if they wanted to, without spending more.

    The reason that the mid sweep affects the sound with the bass or treble boosted is that the mids were cut, so the sweep was changing which mid frequency was being cut.

    I'm not a metal head but I am still glad I got the 1505 with the Nordstrand pickups. I love the aggressive growl, which is what originally drew me to my Stingray, and I find that I can tame it a bit with the active EQ. I also never noticed the mid sweep knob effecting the other controls, that is something I'm going to be playing with as soon as I'm done typing this comment. Looking forward to the Aguilar swap! Keep up the good work!

    • @michaelkeefer4293
      @michaelkeefer4293 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LowEndLobster You had the mid cut/boost knob turned down the whole way when you were noticing the mid sweep effecting the treble and bass controls, right? Well, that's because with the mid control turned down you were cutting mid frequencies, and the frequency at which you were cutting was being changed by the mid frequency control, so that is why the tone changed. I just replicated this on my 1505, but when I had the mid cut/boost knob in the center position the mid sweep does nothing as expected.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :). Glad I could help! Both are great instruments, it really comes down to preference on tone/feel/looks. I'm more partial to my 1005 honestly, but that is 100% subjective. Neither is "better". I like feel of the roasted maple and the neat satin finish more than the porous woods on the 1505. The 1505's neck from a tactile perspective reminds me of a warwick, which a lot of people like. The burled poplar top is also really beautiful (and the seafloor finish that's optional, not the one I have, is AWESOME).

    • @rl-ub9hx
      @rl-ub9hx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or buy nordys for 200 bucks to swap into the 1005, sell the barts or keep them on standby for a project or quick replacement if needed.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rl-ub9hx Regular nords and the ones from the 1505 won't fit, you have to get them custom ordered. The nordies in the 1505 are 1mm too big in one dimension or something. That being said... Nordies with custom roasted maple covers... mmmmm
      Pickups are tough for the 1505 and 1005 because they're using a 6 string housing but 5 string pickup (and the screw config). There's not many other off the shelf options (I think the aguilars might be the only ones).

    • @rl-ub9hx
      @rl-ub9hx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know, 1mm should be easy to overcome. Even having to work for it a little would be cheaper than spending the extra 500

    @dullrazor442 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    While I do like the sound of the 1505 a bit better, I can’t get over that Seafoam Green and roasted maple combo of the 1005- so gorgeous. Considering I can swap out the pickups, that’s the one I’d go for. Do the necks feel any different with the different woods?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The necks feel VERY different. I prefer the solid feel of the roasted maple over the porous feel of the panga panga. The 1505 neck reminds me of a wenge warwick neck in terms of its grain/porousness. The pickup dimensions aren't compatible between instruments, but Nordstrand will make you a custom set if you ask them for the 1005.

    I've got the 1505 mainly because of love for Nordy & wenge, but your last comparison video was soooo helpful to made up my mind. THX so much! This is again the perfect review & comparison but one thing I miss is: the Cat. Where is the Cat? We need the Cat shot with the gear.
    Yes, Mid EQ covers quite broad range, more than expected from the EQ chart in their official website page...
    Btw, I do recommend to check all the screws, since my 1505MS comes with a bit loose on neck joint and bridge...tightening up properly made the sound even more punchier, with more sustain!

    On an active EQ cuircut the standard position or "Flat" wouldn't be all knobs down, it would be all knobs at 50%. Passive knobs are cut only and Active are cut and boost, so the centre point is neutral.
    Thats why the mid knob was changing the sound, you were cutting mids and moving that cut point around.

    The warmer darker tone also comes from the fact that one is basswood body which is the warmest fattest tone wood out there almost, and the other is mahogany which naturally has a warm mid bump in tone. Panga panga also has a very aggressive and present mid range growl, where as roasted maple kinda has a thinner tone mainly focused on the treble range. Again it's not just the pickups

I even looked into some 30” scale length 5 strings to go even smaller, but then you are talking custom and the $ jumps. When I travel, I have taken the soft shell case strategy since they tend to refrain from checking them. Only had to gate check 2x (both international flights). Are we talking guitar case size? This is the video I've been waiting for! Thanks a ton for reviewing these basses! I was initially very set on getting the 1506 (production seems to have finally resumed) and then I stumbled upon the MTD Kingston Z6. Do you have any experience with MTDs?
    I'm chiefly concerned with the slimness of the neck (pick-ups can always be changed), but the 1500 series seem to be maybe a bit too much 'heavy metal' sounding for me, even if that is 80% of what I usually play.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome! I have one older MIK MTD, though the newer ones are being made in China. The MTDs are 35" scale all around but have similar string spacing to the EHB (18mm). The MTD will have a slightly skinnier neck if it's anything like the 5 string Kingston I have. The EHB is girthier than my Kingston, but I wouldn't describe it as chunky. The EHB really fits nicely in the hand. The variable mid frequency on the EHB will give you a lot more tonal versatility overall as well.

    The Bartolinis are just warmer is all. I’m watching this these two are comparable in tone to a p and j bass. 1005 is the warm precision bass and 1505 has the punchy clarity of a Jazz Bass. I’d say screw it get the 1000 series and put a Nordstrand into the bridge spot and turn it into a space age PJ bass. The only issue is the tropical sea floor finish on the 1500 series is the best looking with the sea foam on the 1000 series coming in second.

    Hey Lob, do you notice any hum on the 1005 model with the Bartolini’s and how does that compare to the 1505 as far as Hum goes? It doesn’t seem that the Bartolini’s are completely hum canceling. I’ve had two 1005s here, one used and one new, and they both Hum. So first of all, do you notice any hum/buzzing with your 1005 And how does that compare to the 1505 model with the Nordstrands. And also I know you swapped out your Bartolini’s for Aguilar’s so if you check yours out right now with the Aguilar, do you hear any hum/buzzing? Also, if anybody else can answer this question, it be much appreciated.

      Hey Eskil! Yes, at some point we'll hopefully be able to snag one and review. I played one briefly, and honestly wasn't really digging the short scale all that much with the multiscale neck. The regular 1005MS feel just right with the 35-33" scales. You get the best of both worlds. The short scale just felt a bit too small IMO and I felt a lot more cramped scaling the neck. However this was only maybe a 10 minute encounter with the instrument in a shop, I'll do my best to snag one at some point for an in depth review :)

    Tried out a couple of the EHB1005 basses based on what I've seen on your videos. Sadly neither of them came home with me as they both had issues. The biggest issue was dead notes on the g string at the 9th and 10th frets. The notes would play but a harsh harmonic would ring on after the initial note was played (not sure if that's the best explanation...). Do any of your EHB's have this issue? I have an EHB1005MS coming in to try out but I thought I would ask here. Thanks and keep up the great videos!

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any dead notes on mine, but the harmonic resonance issue does happen to me. I got my 1005 setup by my tech, Dom, and it's much better post setup, but still does creep up every now and then. I've just become more aware of my muting when slapping (the issue doesn't really creep up for me playing fingerstyle). I know others have mentioned it on Talkbass as well. It's strange to say the least. Thanks for watching and thanks for the great comment! :)

    The only other bass I've owned was the Prestige SR5000...and I could not stand having all those knobs tbh. It just makes me want to fiddle with them constantly. It's not a deal breaker, just a preference thing...It would be cool if I could put on like a five way rotary switch or maybe a three way toggle, and just have a few set pre-programmed sounds in there -- so like each EQ dial is on a specific setting for each toggle or rotary position... I'm sure there's a way to do this, I'm just not smart enough to figure it out. Probably would need some kind of EBMM game change-esque system. Oh well, just daydreaming about features :D

    Hey Lobster, I have the EHB1505MS on order. Should be here any day. I have a question about stands.
    I normally display my basses like you do, hanging on the wall, and my gigging stand of choice is one that hangs the bass similarly.
    I’m thinking this may not be possible, or safe, to hang these with the small nubbin of a head stock. Am I right? If so, what stand do you recommend?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YMMV and probably depends on the stand. They make some stands that come in two pieces and will hold your bass sideways on a wall. You can probably utilize the "body" section of one of those stands to provide some lower support for the EHB (something to hold it up under below the body). I personally wouldn't hang it on the nubbin alone.
