I’m in an Aussie touring band and pretty much EVERY WEEKEND we listen to this live TH-cam video. Gosh, what a band, and James you are the ultimate. My incredible drummer Mick Skelton - a huge Gadd fan - put us onto this vid. I can only say hearing it so often is one of life’s great gifts! Xxx
Kevin Wilson check James Taylor Live cd featuring Carlos Vega from 1993.....that is what Steve is paying homage to....I love Steve....but the Carlos break down is much better
Kevin got ears to hear! Agree 100%...99% of drummers including myself would have overplayed that walk...Steve could have but he doesnt...the musical sensibility to know when NOT to play is his genius and self-control and supreme confidence! For all non-drummers, overplaying hard shit is easy...staying DEEP in pocket not so much.
comin' at from down low... ... ...Can't take nothing away from an acoustic pickin' the blues... ... Much love, Brother James ... ... ...and all who on the same page... eternal grateful to call as I/we see it... ... ...As it is...no drama straight in you face TRUTH. Gotta Love It!!! ... ... ...from thee "Country Road" -- J.B.
I'll never forget being at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2003--Andrea Zonn was playing with Vince Gill. That night in Telluride Vince told the crowd it was her last night with him and that she was going to be joining James Taylor's band. She was phenomenal and everyone cheered when he announced it.
Gadd can leave all that space and play for feel instead of time, because not only is his sense of time impeccable, but so is James Taylor’s (and everyone else in the band). If anything, James is leading the time during most of that vocal/drum break, and Gadd can make a long phrase out of long notes instead of keeping time. Funny how the drummers who are best at keeping time get to play in bands that don’t need the drummer to keep time for them…
epic, legendary, timeless, real wooooow-stuff this is one of this songs u never forgot like Billy Joels "Pianomen" or CSNY "Southern Cross". Just unbelieve sound and voice.
Amazing " holes" from Dr Gadd..............wow.............This guy knows........oh my god...I think Andrea falls in love with him in his fills that just is sooo perfect
Holger Larsen Steve is paying tribute to the late great Carlos Vega....he is replicating the same fills Carlos used...check out James Taylor live double cd set...great pocket drumming
I know TimVideo 326 ....all my respect to Carlos and i know his work....amazing drummer , no doubt but i dont compare and Steve DONT replicate.............he do the fills in his own way with a lot of " air" and timing
I love when James & Steve start that call & response treatment at 3:30, & the rest of the band is just watching Steve. Magic. Then they all fall in without missing a beat. Also not lost are all those tasty fills Mike Landau does on that Tele throughout. I'm sorry but I just don't hear any musicianship like this out there today.
Drummer and massive music fan here. I listen to a tonne of different drummers and styles of music. There are only two moments drum wise that really, really move me and get to me, emotionally. One is this drum break. The other is the drum fills half way through We Belong Together by Rickie Lee Jones Both Steve Gadd. Say no more.
Same here. I've played drums on an off for 50 years and this is the only drumming that has ever brought me tingles and tears to my eyes. It is ecstatic.
There is a Steve Gadd interview out there where he dedicates this solo to Carlos Vega with love/ tribute, to Carlos, gone too early. Only Steve can play like Steve and pull this off. If that is Russ in the audience, it’s no wonder he’s smiling.
@fireandrain1 It's a difficult call to make. I too am a drummer and I have to say Gadd is one of if not my biggest influence, however so is Carlos Vega. I have seen Gadd do this solo with Taylor live and it is truely awesome, but for me personally I prefer the version Vega does. What I do love about Gadd's version though is the amount of space and the sound of his kit - it's epic. I guess music is subjective but Vega was also a less is more person.
3:30 drum break -Steve Gadd nice one. Perhaps this is wrong, but I’ve heard Brian Blade explore this territory less leaden-footed. Obviously both are masters in their craft.
Well now...I'm a drummer and they are both amazing and very different.....when you hear gadd you know it's him....and he's no spring chicken either....kudos to him at this age
I come back to this live version and its drum solo (by Steve Gadd) at least 4x a month. Too tasty.
I get goose bumps every time I hear and see that Steve Gadd breakdown with James. It is so tasty and so much space between the beats.
Steve is a top 10 drummer in my book I have had a chance to talk to many great drummers and the admiration for his body of work is apparent
Never gets old
His stories always touch my heart. ❤ The artistry in his work.
Gadd damn I love that drummer! My favorite new version of this amazing song.

You've played with a ton of killer drummers, Rai. The fact that you dig James and Steve makes me massively happy.
Steve Gadd. 3:30. That is one of the most stirring drum walks ever. Few notes, but says so much.

this why an old wine is supreme and a young wine is only good
Gadd is considered a all star drummer amount great drummers Charlie Watts Russ Kunkel etc can't say enough good things about him
Steve Gadd is a BEAST!!

This is great, Steve Gadd and JT playing together are magnificent!
Nádherné písně které jsem poslouchal v roce 1969 na starém radiu v České republice. Budou mně provázet až do konce života.Děkuji!

The force is strong with the drummer it is…
Best version ever of Country Roads . . . . and the one on the CD which (I think) has two drummers? Brilliant!

Steve Gadd fantástico y sublime como lo sencillo y groovie puede erizarte la piel!
Loved the fiddle playing!
one of the best songs ever made.
So good.

Andrea Zonn is one of THE best fiddle players out there, bar none.
GADD ... FANTASTIC !!!!!!
Always a good time whith JT and oll these band!
Like a chorus of angels singing before the very Throne of Gadd.
Oh James please please come in PARIS .

Eric - BRILLIANT - love this version....Thanks for sharing.

Gadd's bass drum upbeat at 4 mins destroys me every time :)
And those are those famous same hi hats from the early days of Steve Gadd recently retired after 50 years.
Well now...I'm a drummer and they are both amazing and very different.....when you hear gadd you know it's him....and he's no spring chicken either....kudos to him at this age
Is that Russ Kunkel at 4:00😱
Steve God
Love this song, drum feature is a lot better in his 'Best Live' version. Violin is the stand out in this song.
I want a Jim Olsen guitar,they're only 10grand and a 10 year waiting list!
JT's the best!!
"A bit of a legend," Steve Gadd.
Ya think?....lol he's awesome!
YEAH!!!
Thumbs up to the electric guitar and rythym section!
If the hair on the back of you neck does not stand up during that breakdown section, you've got something wrong with you.
@desertswo
I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!
If there was a Mt. Rushmore for drummers, Steve Gadd would be on it.
yeah, i think that's a 4th model for him ...
I dont understand how steve gadd.
Gadd. Played a LOT w/ Clapton.
3:34
Gadd just took a massive dumb on that audience
@mutineer350 Suhr Tele w/P-90 neckpu
@mutineer350 sunburst suhr telecaster

@trooper744 Neil who ? Come on man...
@Thwack98
You're obviously not a drummer..Carlos Vega(best live ) was indeed a fine drummer but sometimes....less is more.
