Introducing Project Sunroof
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 ส.ค. 2015
- Project Sunroof is mapping the planet’s solar potential, one rooftop at a time. Find out more www.google.com/sunroof
Project Sunroof uses information that’s in Google Maps to figure out how much sun falls on a roof and takes into account stuff like the angle of the roof, the weather, and obstructions like trees and chimneys. Then it uses those measurements to figure out how many panels you’d probably need and how much you could save on your electric bill, including solar incentives in your area. You can see how buying or leasing panels affects your savings, and then send your estimate to installers in your area, instantly.
Visit google.com/sunroof and enter your address to find out how much solar energy could save you. Project Sunroof works in Boston, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Fresno. But anyone can sign up to find out when it expands to their neighborhood. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Thank you, Carl, and please make it available everywhere. :)

MrKleenexDude Yes, and Scarecrow :D My favourite Batman villains.
banescar Fun fact: In Israel almost every household has solar panels on the roof, harvesting the sun's energy, since the 1960s.
years for it to reach other countries: 202388732903092312391
***** given how fast Google and other US tech companies have been developing things I think it'll be a significantly shorter time then that, I give em 5-10 years max since this doesn't appear all that complicated
nachscratch Well, lets not jump to conclusions. Don't overestimate or underestimate Google
nachscratch Gorilder I would say it would take Google a year or two if that long to scale this service across the U.S. the reason primarily being the data is already available (e.g., irradiance from NREL, roofing area from Gmaps etc) Where Google is adding value is namely user convenience (ie bringing all the disparate information together, developing accurate algorithms to estimate solar design and costs in one easy to understand web portal, and providing recommendations for installers). PVWatts by NREL is a similar service but I think Project Sunroof's interface is easier to use and goes one step furthur.
It will definitely give consumers interested in solar an easy way to estimate whether its a economically feasible option.
nachscratch nah, Google is not Apple, Apple launched Maps service in 2011 and until now its not available in 99% of the world. Google is much faster.
nachscratch *5, I say 5

amazing how we're all getting recommended a video for a dead 4 year old project
Please spread this everywhere!! (And come to Japan next)
Rachel & Jun omg i watch your videos what a coincidence xD nihon wa sugoi desuuu
cheers from Tunisia
Such maps already exist.
They're called solar cadastres.
***** It would probably be even easier for them as well, because they can take already existing maps then.
Rachel & Jun Australia after Japan! :D
Rachel & Jun from some of the videos I've seen from TheJapanChannel you don't really need this as you can get government rebates for your solar panels, not something the USA can really same in some states.
Nowadays, while watching Google's TH-cam videos I always check the uploaded date first. So, I won't get fooled.
First thing I did, I've already been fooled once, you know what they say...
Same.

What about Arizona, the state that gets 300 days of sunshine a year...
Boogster Su
If this idea works in Boston it will work in Arizona for sure, so no point in testing things easy.
More over, as it is said in the video, all the information is already available, it's not like Google gonna provide solar PV systems itself for everyone, just a handy place for the info.
Blacknaag0 yeah, I remember google had a feature that you could see a satellite view and the time could be adjusted. I could clearly see where the shadows were at different times. I did this to find the best spot on the property. A solar installer passed me this tip years back.
Boogster Su I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it would be easier to do things like this where they already have a base of operations and large teams of people who can work on it, instead of shipping them out to Arizona to waste a lot of time getting set up just to get the same results.
Boogster Su then project sunroof would do u anygood
Boogster Su You don't need project sunroof in Arizona, just throw a solar panel anywhere and it'll generate 1.21 gigawatts of electricity in a second.
Yes! I can't wait!
This is pretty cool!

Hah this is literally my job. We use Google maps and an azimuth tool to figure out the best planes before we show up to survey the roof. It's a great start, but somebody needs to be there (I vote drones b/c f*ck ladders) to take pictures & document pipes, chimneys, shingle quality, etc. before a blueprint can be made.
*was* your job
Billy Zile lmfao
Eric Morrison agreed. We haven't used our drone in this manner yet we did set up a timelapse for a client.
Eric Morrison Here you go...www.monster.com/
Barnett Associates Real Estate Team better watch it, the FAA is still very against commercial use of drones. Wedding photographers have even faced fines.
How could someone dislike this? I mean, seriously, how?

Henrique Foletto still extremely limited support? Or maybe the commercial sounds like a video made for pre-preschoolers?
Henrique Foletto I do believe that there's a group of trolls on TH-cam that have nothing better to do than thumbs-down all possible videos. They've found this one.

Henrique Foletto because it's not available in location?
This is brilliant. Absolutely fantastic idea.
i love the animation on this
glad I'm not the only one!
It's so great to see that it's only available in 3 LOCATIONS. Please make it available to everyone!
i thought this was an april fools joke... *looks at date posted
"wait... huh?"
@@hwfq34fajw9foiffawdiufhuaiwfhw Google tends to make april fools videos. So i thought it was too.
Great idea. For those too eager to wait, there is most likely a sun chart you can use to calculate this. In my line of work we actually use this to determine the amount of overshadowing a proposed residential building will cause, however the same method applies to determine the amount of sunlight you will receive [depending on your location it may be harder to determine this (i.e. places obstructed by nearby objects)].
Thank you, google , and please make it available everywhere. :)
this is probably 1 of the biggest first steps we can make to save money and nature at the same time, who doesnt loves this?
This is brilliant.
The sun's energy is so underutilized... Go Google!

I love this idea. Showing people how much they can save is the key!
Great concept, I wonder if there is an adaptation to pair this with other renewable energy sources.
Awesome.
Thumbs up for the initiative.Hope Google will expand the project across other countries as well!
6 years late but the project.....MAD RESPECT!!!!
Hopefully a faster rollout than Fiber, maybe?
please please please make this spread faster than 10 years. I'm in Michigan and there's still no Google Fiber, no Google Express, and now no Sunroof.
I work as a consultant with SolarCity. I'm super excited about this project but I find that the software is not quite up to par yet. The biggest problem is that the software calculates roof space. The problem with that is that fire code prohibits using the roof 3' from the edges and ridge of the roof which limits the amount of available space quite a bit. Second thing limiting usable space are all sorts of vents, skylights and other obstacles. I'm sure though that all this will be fixed within a year or two
Brilliant plan! Love the ideas! Love how forward thinking google always is.

so what's the progress 1 year later?
None. There is no profit in this project, so I think they scrapped it...
Kaptain Owl amazed they continued the project.
Dr Manhattan, I thought you were investigating nature in another galaxy :P
What are you doing back on Earth?
Roofus Onna I don't get the meme, please enlighten me
Slingger Adheel has a profile picture of the super hero Dr Manhattan from the Alan Moore comic book Watchmen.
He is basically an Atomic man who has absolute? power over quantum mechanics.
He became unrelatable to humans and their problems, and after he broke up with his girlfriend every attatchment that held him to Earth was severed.
Dr Manhattan left out solar system and sought to explore the nature of the universe by himself, alone.
Maybe he will start off the evolutionary process on another planet in another galaxy and watch life adapt.

It's just 3 cities now, but pretty soon the project will be shut down completely.
olimario Google is not selling anything... they are giving everyone free information which was already there... and making it easier for people to switch to solar. You don't know what you are talking about, lol.
theskeletonboi I never said they were selling anything. I said this project will be shut down in a hot second like every other half-baked thing they do.
olimario Obviously you didn't say they were selling something, lol. I can read what you said above. Don't be silly, there is no reason to shut down a free project.... Everything they make starts off "half-baked", it is incredibly rare for them to shut off a project.(Especially one that just involves a web-page with their algorithm linked up to it. Funny thing is, they actually have tons of projects, you only hear about the popular ones like this one, and they all are implemented flawlessly.
theskeletonboi No flaws! You heard it here first! Google escapes thousands of years of human error.
olimario Yes, everything has flaws, but Google manages to implement everything flawlessly. Stop drowning yourself in your own ignorance.
The data analysis has me drooling.
Amazing, google is definitely always at the forefront of innovation. solar is the most reliable and most viable source of energy, I'm glad to see it become easier, more efficient, higher productive, and simpler to use and get started with. thanks google, and keep being awesome
but what the hell are we going to do in 5 billion years when the sun burns out? #thinkofthekids

Thank you very much for this, Google.

If everyone used Sloar panels it would save alot of problems.
You right dude!
Sometimes I hate being in the UK, everything gets released in the US..... Such as samsung pay first and I'm sure android pay will release there first :(
Malkesh Vaghela dude atleast your in a first world country, none of those cool things are coming to Jamaica in a while, hope fully the next 15 years
nor Indonesua

Itz evil there's a lot of people from india in the UK. just like mexican people in the US.
Malkesh Vaghela Google Wallet is essentially the same thing and has been out for a very long time.
cant wait till we get this were we are at. because were looking at getting solar panels on our place soon.
we need this in Seattle!
But wut if we use up all the sunlite
Good point. People in 18th century North America just lumberjacked trees constantly, thinking they would be able to cut more forever. Maybe today's scientists are those lumberjacks. If we overuse the sun it will go out and turn into worthless soot.
