Does micro CHP make sense?

  • Combined heat and power CHP allows us to get the most value out of natural gas. The intention is to produce the amount of heat that we need for a business and produce electricity as an efficient byproduct. This example looks at the hand calculations for a small CHP facility to see if it makes sense.

for an off grid house... most of the energy is needed for heating...... when solar/electochem batteries are getting low. Run a heat recovery generator to drive a heat pump, the total efficiency should still be more than 100% for most of the continental USA...assume a COP of 2.5 average for the Heat pump...and maybe 80% for the fuel burning genny with heat recovery.

I wanted to understand combined heat and power so I can better understand how all this energy source might transition to renewable sources in the future.
It seems that the CHP model is all about using the inefficiency of combuston to provide heat. But renewable energy will be far more efficient and will not have this excess heat

CHP makes sense for places that are cold and do not have a surplus of renewable power (hydroelectric). Here we use gas turbines as the best way to supply electricity. CHP recovers more energy from natural gas than a gas turbine. CHP may be a poor solution for places with abundant hydroelectric power.

Thanks for your clear info would you be able to do a brief breakdown for a residential setup scenario.
I saw the weissmann Vitovalor PT2
In London England 🇬🇧 😎. I was curious as to if it would be a good investment.
