I am bringing mine to local toy shops. It helps fill their stock, opens up space for me and I can either pick up a piece I was looking for or take the cash and not have to do all the eBay work. It’s a win for everyone.
Personally, I think it’s an opportunity for content for both you and Toy Federation. You could fill a van and you guys could do a celebrity trade in video. It would get a million views

I would love a video series on your progress adding new displays, curating what you find in the totes and overall updating your toy rooms. I’m always curious what choices others make for display and I find it to be one of the finest parts of my own collection.

Vintage toy collecting is no different from any collectibles of historical art and items. I am a firm believer if its not in the of your collection that you feel the need to display it then why have it. I agree with another post redo the basement as a bigger studio and fund it by selling off the items you don’t need in the collection. Its not like you can’t ever get it again. All of this stuff is in constant rotation between all of us.

I'm completely the same. My Embarrassment is a giant stack of plastic boxes that every time I start sorting, several hours pass by, I rediscover it's all really cool stuff, and none of it I want to get rid of

That’s exactly how I always feel when trying to purge some of my collection. Everything I have left I genuinely love and can’t see myself parting with. There’s just too many cool things. I’m always trying to find things I can get rid of though.

Never commented on TH-cam. Also never seen your videos before, but this one showed up for me in my feed today, and I wanted to say I appreciated your honesty and openness about your collecting. I've had similar thoughts about my own collections over the years, and so a lot of what you've said resonates with me. Thank you for sharing!

I get it Dan- I think a lot of collectors feel this especially at this time of the year. You clearly do so much for the toy world, I mean you are a part of its history now! As long as your family is happy and healthy there is no reason to feel shame for this stuff bringing you joy!

I can feel a show on the horizon: Dan's toy therapy. All jokes aside, I know where you're coming from. I took a bunch of my stuff and put it in boxes before Christmas because I said I'm almost I don't need to be collecting this stuff. I'm single with no kids so no one's going to inherit this. And then I am embarrassed thinking how much money I wasted but it makes me happy. So now I kind of want to put all the stuff back out. Haha.

You know I relate. The collection in the basement here got so big, and you can attest to the fact that there was just stuff EVERYWHERE...I went down the opposite path though. I sold 80% of it because it just gave me anxiety walking down there every time. I loved the stuff, but it was at a breaking point. The Theater Room and the small portion I kept makes me MUCH happier.

I just redid my displays and collection, cutting back several collections and packing away others that I feel aren't necessary to display right now. I'm much happier with my collection now, although it is still overwhelming just how much I have. One thing that I thought to myself as I got rid of stuff was "would I rebuy this eventually if it was lost to a house fire or anything?". If the answer is yes, I'll keep it for now. If no, it's outta here. I enjoy having a diverse toy collection but after a while I had to realize that I can't be an archivist and much of what I had felt like I had it just for the sake of having it. I enjoy going to various toy stores and toy shows to see and experience toys I normally would never buy, and that's been a great way for me to both grow and define my collection.
Great vid dude! As you go through all those other totes I'd love to see more of them on camera!!

I feel a lot of this to my core! I've collected so many things over the years that I'm running out of space, and things that I'm not sure i have any attachment to. One of the things I plan on doing for my channel this year is specifically showing off toys I already own vs bringing in too many more. You had so many cool things in the totes that you may never have shown off! Maybe it's worth it to do that Swamp Thing or Pizza Thrower clones video after all. ;)

The Swamp Thing toy line was definitely an underrated line. I remember them fondly. In the UK we have usually have loft storage rather than basements. My loft is full of empty boxes and tubs of figures. I’d love to be able to display them all but without a man cave I’m very limited on display space. As you say though it is very exciting to rediscover a toy that’s been in storage for a while 😁

It's so crazy I randomly came across this channel today. Same situation, I moved to a bigger house 5yrs ago, but now more of my collection is found in the totes of shame. I beat myself up over it, and wonder if I just sell it all....but every time I go through a tote, I get sucked back into the nostalgia and feels. Going through these comments, though, I find comfort knowing I'm not even close to being the only one. I still would like to downsize somehow, and find a way to rotate and showcase new items that I love. I feel bad they're just stuck in boxes. Goals for '25 I guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some years back I had the epiphany to go "modular" with my displays. I realized that you can't just "add a case" or wall space forever. So the solution was to setup the room as "modular" and now I swap things out thematically now and again. It's sort of a "have your cake and eat it to method". it's great.

I was you once. I had Star Wars, MOTU, GI Joe, Hot Wheels and other odds and ends. I had fun hunting and attending shows for many many years. I finally realized it had to end after looking at boxes and boxes of toys piled in basements, garages, and various rooms.
I decided to let it all go, so someone else could enjoy what I had. You will do the same thing. It will hit you at some point if not already and you will need to free yourself. It will not be easy but it will be refreshing and a relief!!!! Believe me! 😀👍🏻

Jokes aside, I have only been back into toy collecting the last few years, and it's already boxes and boxes of stored items that I don't have room for (not to mention gigantic playsets like Eternia and Cat's Lair). Dan, you will never have to worry about me going after the stuff you are looking for. I've had some storage issues in the past. For me I don't have a real issue with storage.but that has more to do with things I like being expensive. I do have an issue with buying things that other people like and then deciding I don't get enjoyment out of it. D&D and Ghostbusters toys are out as an example.

I'm at a point where I'm selling off chunks and trying to focus on the stuff I really dig. If it's been in a bin for X amount of time, then it can probably go away.

Couldn’t tell you how similar my situation is. I’m trying to figure out what to do this year, or else I’m selling a lot.
I have heard of a few people who’ve bought storage sheds to display and/or store their collection. I’ve considered that.

As part of going through the storage boxes you should add labels to them to help with keeping track of them.

To personally, and that is just one persons opinion, anything that cannot be displayed falls into the category of hoarding ^^ That's where I personally draw the line. if I cannot put it on a shelf (and I mean dedicated shelf space, not taking over all the space in the house, putting toys in the hallway or the living room), then I am not getting it. The truth is, you cannot buy everything, and if you try, you are starting to overspend for stuff that you just "possess", without being able to appreciate and enjoy out in the open.
