Wagon easier to reach into middle of car. Wagon easier to load baby capsule. Wagon easier for toddler to climb into chair so I can do up harness.
So far that’s all positives to the wagon.
Wagon has 15% more storage than cx5. But infinitely more usable storage.
      Wagon lighter
      Stops quicker
      Turns harder
      Accelerates quicker
      Cheaper rego
      Uses less fuel
Ok and now the advantages of SUV
MORE VISIBILITY for you but less for car behind you
      Shorter car

I owned until recently a MY11 GH 6 wagon diesel. Loved it to bits! Great fuel economy, fun to drive and mechanically bulletproof. Drove Sydney to Brisbane and back, fully loaded with kids and luggage and averaged 5L to 100km! Not bad for a 10 year old car! The mechanic loved it as it was easy to service, and was surprised that there were so few about. The diesel only came in a manual, which blunted the appeal.
As for the diesel reliability, I never had an issue. I think three things in particular helped ,
    1. Service by the book, so 6 months or 10,000km (I know the later models have gone to 12 months). This prevents much of the oil issues that was mentioned. Check the oil regularly, both level and condition, as that is a good indicator.
    2. Diesel cars don’t like small stop start trips, you need to drive at least 20 minutes at 80kph to get the DPF to do a proper burn and regenerate. If you’re only doing short trips on a regular basis, stick to the petrol.
    3. I installed a ERG blanking plate which reduced the particulate matter recirculated into the engine, it kept the oil cleaner.
I traded the 6 in for CX-8 as the kid needed more room and the car getting some electrical gremlins. Still miss the 6 as it was a great car, heck, my dad drove it and it brought back memories of his old 626 that he loved, so he went and bought the GJ Mazda 6 sedan a couple of years later! He still loves the car even now.

I too am thinking of getting a CX8 in the 2.5 NA because I only do short trips. The CX8 is discontinued and the Mazda 6 is about to be discontinued it seems so Mazda can focus on their rear wheel drive platform.
Which CX8 did you get and how are you finding it so far? The economy and practicality are just mind blowing!

    • @paulmcgregor6411
      @paulmcgregor6411 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@michaelinzitari I got the Touring Active Diesel (Yes, I know what they said about the Diesel!) Love the car in general, though miss the 6 for its handling (not that the CX-8 isn’t good) and the 6 had more oddments storage up front as well as a cargo blind.
The CX-8 is roomy, good tech and good economy for its size. I’m averaging around 7.5L per 100km, that’s a mix of around town and travel to work. Haven’t done any super long highway trips yet, but have got it below 6 and into the mid 5 when cruising along at 80 back and forth to work.
The 2.5 atmos sounds like a good fit for you and there’s still stock of them available at dealers, check the dealer websites, as they list stock and driveway prices, useful info if they try and negotiate prices from RRP! Mine tried and I used that against them and got 6k off even before trading in my Mazda6!

  • @Bilsoncomm
    @Bilsoncomm ปีที่แล้ว +24

As an owner of one of these from new since mid 2013 I fully concur with this review. Mine is the 2.5L petrol Touring Level Sedan. The leather trim (yes, the parts you actually sit on are real perforated leather, not vinyl like a $80k Merc or something these days )and the Bose Amp and speakers made this the sweet spot in the range over the hard riding GT on 19s with a sunroof and better lamps but for quite a few thousand more. Admittedly low km (about 75k) I have had ZERO problems apart from the development of the occasional harsh gear downshift which was fixed at service by the Mazda dealer via a computer reset and some software upgrade FOR FREE, and the car was old and way out of warranty by then - see how you get on at a VW or Merc dealer with something similar! No squeaks, no rattles, nothing has falling off. One set of replacement tyres, one battery, still on original brakes. Long term economy 7.4L/100km - Corolla type fuel economy. My silver paint has been excellent so I don’t know about the complaints on that, perhaps it varies with colour. People who complain about power are probably used to modern turbo motors and have forgotten how to drive an atmo vehicle. Mid range torque maximum at 250 Nm is still very good for a 2.5L atmo and most other manufacturers have not achieved this or the high 13.1 compression ratio which brings the efficiency. Performance from say 90 to 130 is quite acceptable I have always thought and around town on light throttle the engine is quite torquey for an atmo 4 pot. Road noise on very coarse road surfaces can be excessive but apparently newer upgrades are better in this regard. Much of this criticism is probably due to reviewers jumping on the Mazda bashing bandwagon I suspect as actual measurements are rarely provided. The fact that Mazda still essentially has this vehicle in production is a testament to the excellent design more than a decade ago. It still probably sets the standard in the class in what alas is a reducing sector due to the obsession with less efficient poorer handling so called SUVs. I am glad that I didn’t buy the diesel but few did I understand. Keep up the great work on the reviews, one of the few that have any real meaning these days!

I thought your review here was spot on. I had a 2012 diesel wagon a few years ago and was suckered into buying it by the looks and the drive, both of which I thought were great. Unfortunately in my 2 years of ownership, I had nothing but trouble with the DPF, it simply wouldn't regenerate on its own and had to be done 'manually' every few months. I'd also agree with the complaint about the i-stop function. At T-junctions I would quite often pull out of a side road only for the engine to cut out half way across, it was terrifying at times! The switch-off just seemed to happen way too late.
It's a real shame these few major niggles weren't ironed out as apart from them, it's a great car. The load bay is very low in reality, so despite the 'numbers', getting bulky items in and out was trickier than I'd imagined it would be. I regularly had two e-MTBs in there and doing this now in my Passat wagon is much easier and cleaner. Even getting into the car as the driver, I'd hit my head on the frame on the odd occasion. Road noise and ride comfort were issues too, not helped by the 19" wheels and low profile tyres on my version. (I think it was the 'Touring Nav' model I had?) The engine had loads of torque however and when it was running well, was a real pleasure to do long journeys.
It wasn't particularly economical though and whilst I didn't expect the usual, optimistic consumption figures to be achieved, it would struggle to get 45mpog on a long trip, with a light right foot.

Great REview! I have the 2016 GL 2.5 wagon and after being in the Facebook group for a while now I can confirm the diesel owners buy the diesel then join the group to complain.
I don’t have any wiper issues.
My air con is ice cold even though I know it’s leaking.
I have the sport base model no Bose audio.
Also SPORT has no cheap pleather which cracks and gets cold and gets hot.
Avoid turbo because you want reliability and economy and cheap insurance.
My Mazda had the ghost touch screen issue on the MZD connect so I made a TH-cam video how to resolve that (disconnect the touch screen and use the captains knob).
My GL 2.5 petrol NA returns 5.75L/100 on highway and if I drive super carefully around town it can achieve amazing results. The turbo is not more economical. The diesels economy is false due to the engine and sensor and DPF drama which is never ending. Everyone now knows to avoid any Mazda diesel so thank you for that. All Mazda paint completely sucks except for the BLUES. This is the only colour you can fix stone chips yourself easily.

Almost no other appreciably issues. But one thing worries me: The exhaust gases that are being burnt again producing carbon black in different parts of the engine. But that's inevitable and due to the mad emission standards here in Germany. Still today there is no other car in the market I would choose over a 6. I own a Mazda 6 model 2017 station wagon. I just went past 170.000 km (100.000) miles without so much as a yellow warning light. Literally zero defects. Unsurpassed japanese quality and at the same time it looks absolutely gorgeous. I also really enjoy watching all the other people driving their plastic pieces of s__t to the auto garage, because they need repairs once again. The interior looks gorgeous as well with the white leather and I got all the options, so I really don't miss anything. I cannot recommend Mazda 6 enough. ❤❤

I leased one of these a few years ago. It was the 2014 2.2 skyactive diesel manual sport wagon nav in dark matallic red with black leather sport seats with red piping, also had the larger 19" graphite coloured wheels. I absolutely loved everything about this car, its looks, price, interior, handling, comfort and the wagon boot space was excellent. Here in the UK they are popular but not extremely common. Unfortunately the turbo failed, I had this car second hand and thought the previous owner was a thrasher abuser, but it turns out this turbo issue was common on Skyactive diesels. Mazda were awesome and changed out the turbo out of warranty for free, parts and labour. This proves that Mazda care about retaining customers and admit that there is a problem with these, VW, Reault or Peugeot would likely say tough titty, out of warranty so take a hike. We have something called an MOT over here in the UK which is an annual condition check, my 6 got an advisory about corrosion around the rear sub frame (common issue in our climate) so I traded it in for a different petrol car. I was not doing high milage before so could not justify owning a diesel, which can contribute to carbon build up in turbos and EGR. I would consider a petrol 6 wagon, the wagon is one of the best looking estate cars for the money.

My Dad had an GL 2.2 diesel for nearly 3 years. He drove it regularly and didn't have any trouble. I personally loved driving it, and the diesel engine just felt so effortless and strong. It's a pity so many had such issues.
On the i-stop, I can confirm the battery can be the problem if it stops working. I looked at the computer and the charge capacitor also would not charge up. The car hadn't had much use after my Dads passing and the battery had drained a bit. The Mazda service centre failed to check the battery properly on the service too. I was able to fix it by charging at 18V DC up to 15A (the recommended way to recover the battery) and then gave Mazda a serve for not picking up on it.
Truely great car. I hope one day I can get a petrol turbo wagon, in Red

Would love to see one of the GH.
I own a Mazda 6 MY2010 GH 2.0 Petrol since early 2023 and it's been so great at such a good price.
I Iike to have fun, having been a big fan of my 2zz Celica, and the handling is like....reaally really good on the Mazda 6.
Even with 2.0 155hp it's no slouch. Reasonable torque and gets going decently, redlining effortlessly at just over 200k kms.
Compression and emissions tests suggested engine is .... welp almost like new.
Heaps of space also.. moved from one country to another like 2000 kms away and filled it up pretty good, as well as fitting a roofbox full of stuff and handled 2 trips really well.
Just... amazing, underrated and the BOSE sound system is an absolute jewel and a surprise

Test drove an update Atenza wagon just last week. 2.5 petrol. Stunning. I would have been tempted if I was buying for myself. Went well, stopped well, steered and pointed well, it was a great drive. Only downside it was a seriously hot day - the dark blue paint (gorgeous) and black (shoot me now) leather interior made the aircon look very insipid indeed. After years of upright 4WDs it also felt like I was sitting in a hole. Sadly it didn't fulfil some of the requirements of my client.

Current Mazda 6 owner, 2014 here. Can confirm the i-stop issue, especially in Finland when it gets to -20 celsius in the winter it's mostly nothing but an annoyance and leads to the battery management system throwing a fault code every now and then due to the battery charge getting low. Also the aircon, it seems like at least on my car it's calibrated to be too polite when left on auto and almost never uses full power unless you force it to. So in hot weather it's best to just set it to 15 celsius and let it cool down the car instead of using auto. Other than the battery codes and the overzealous tire pressure sensors, I like the car, though.

My Mother had a 1995 626 wagon (2.2Litre) . She drove it until she upgraded in 2014 to a mazda 3 sedan. The only reason she updated it was she had 480,000kms on it and she was afraid it would become "Unreliable soon" Me and some friends used it as a paddock bomb afterwards, and it still had the original clutch. We revved the crap out of it, smashing haybales and thrashing around the farm on and off until 2020 when we damaged the radiator and it ran dry due to the grandkids not stopping to fill it up. Amazingly reliable car, the only thing that ever went wrong in it was the aircon needed re-gassing at one stage and the tappits were a little noisy.

GF had an '08 Golf Variant 2.0 TSI which was a riot to drive with torque like a 265 but imo a ticking time bomb so eventually she decided to replace it. Criteria pointed to the Mazda6 shown here as the only real reliable choice and she ended up with a '14 Touring. What a beautiful car with lots of fruit, and particularly the 19" wheels (although limited tyre choice with these). My only criticism would be the seat base can get a bit hard on a long trip, and the farty exhaust. Otherwise agree with the review, drives like something three times the price without the reliability worries. Maintenance schedule is minimal, it has a proper Aisin designed auto (Mazda produced under license), adequate power with the 2.5 (the turbo would be the one), and beautiful, just beautiful. Mazda will be at the top of my shopping list when I am due for a change from my current Toyota now that they are all CVT and hybrid mad.

Just picked up my new 20th Anniversary sedan in Rhodium White two weeks ago. Well not quite new, a June 2023 build, but for the price of $56K driveaway in NSW try and find an equivalent Euro that will match it for under $90K.
Whilst it now has only 500km on the clock I'm not going to push the turbo too hard yet until I break it in some then we'll see how 173kW and 420Nm go through the front wheels. On the weekend with a short open road drive was sitting around 7ltrs per 100k's which is fair as I expect it to improve a little as it loosens up.
This is my second 6 and if the first one is anything to go by then this should be a fun 'family' car that looks like grandpa would drive but is a bit of a sleeper. A free flow exhaust and slight tune could give it a little lift....

I have a 2014 Atenza wagon, i love the thing its the best car that i've owned, this is coming from owning a 2008 wm caprice v8, toyota crown athlete grs184 and alot of other cars that are "famed" for being very good, it doesn't feel low on power, its very comfortable, safety features are what i really like coming from a big v8 rwd car that just had "brakes" as your safety option lol, highly recommend the car, i get 7.7km/100 fill up every 3 weeks, i have a bit of a lead foot so you might get better fuel economy! and you can actually see out of the fucking thing and not be shocked when a car comes out of nowhere.

I own a III gen post-lift version of a 6 wagon. Love the car, ccant go wrong with the buy. Few things of note: stay away from diesels. Dont buy the 17'' wheel rims, they eat tyres for some reason. 19'' not only look better but have no issues. Brake wheel discs are bad quality, if you like to go fast and brake a lot get ready for more common exchanges. I still didnt find a good alternative. Basic sound system sounds bad, but the Bose one sounds incredibly amazing. Soul red may look beautiful but chips away and is damaged easily, same for the polymetal grey, blue and black. White paint is the thickest - i checked, and snow pearl white seems to be the most sturdy. Mazdas 6 before 2018 are thinner (0.7mm vs 1.4mm sheet metal in wheel bays, dont have data on the rest) and therefore louder, and perhaps more prone to rust. And thats all thats bad about the car, really. 70k miles so far, no issues whatsoever. No rust at all. I can service the car myself. Access is easy and you can easily reset servicing intervals in the computer. This feels like peak "old" mechanical engineering; you get all the perks of a modern car while being able to fix it in your garage. The interior is beautiful and my SkyPassion version even has ventillated seats. I love the car and dont plan on selling it ever. Long story short: get a snow pearl white on 19'' wheels manufactured after 2018. You won't regret it.

True about Mazda paint. I have a Mazda 3 Astina 2018, full of chips on the hood. I got a kit from Dr Colorchip and problem solved. Just follow the instructions and get the right color, DONE !! you have to use a magnifier to note the difference.
Also, t thinking into change the Astina for a Mazda 6 GT or Atenza Wagon. I love wagons (estate), please Mazda, Skoda and BMW, don't give up !!! way better than a SUV.

Loved my mazda 6, sporty, good quality on fabrics in chair (looked like new after 170 000km)
and wheel and gear nob and not so much problems
    BUT:
1.rust, rust, rust! In doors, under, wheel arches, tailgate and more, DO go for extra rust protection!
    2. AC weak and gave up and it cost half a months salary to fix.
    3. Heater to weak (I live in sweden) can not get rid of snow on the windshield, and the wipers are to high up in the panel so wipers freeze solid in a place where the defroster do not heat.
In over -15 you have to have everything on full heat and full blast and it´s not enough, and we sometimes have -30 and then it´s no fun having to drive wearing a snowmobile overall basicly...
    4. Bose stereo broke 3 times in only 150 000km, first one totaly dead in just 15 000 km (3 months old car), next lost a speaker (probably the amp), and the third problem was vierd, on radio all speakers worked but on aux and cd only work one passanger side, also the radio on all of them have super bad reception!!!
    5. Xenon, my car got hit, and they try to fix, they changed stuff for like 10-12 AUD but never got it to work again, so the garage put in halogen and that worked fine, but to change lightbulb takes a childs had or a meckanic, I worked in a gas station for 7 years changing bulbes every day for customers but I could not change on my own car 😞
    6. Silver panels in the car get scratches.
    7. Original battery is to weak, almost did not start in the winter, I change for a "power bull" 95Ah and the problem was gone.
    8. I have seen more than 100 mazda 6 petrol sold with broken engines due to broken frame bearing, so to check oil on these car should be done very often, I check every time before I go driving over 200km in one go...

I have a 2016 Sport wagon, had it just over 3 years following a 2010 Subaru Outback. Don’t miss the AWD and much prefer the more conventional automatic to the Outback’s CVT. Would I buy one again? Absolutely 💯

The problem with low to the ground wagons as oppose to high up SUVs is that with the deteriorating conditions of country roads and the fact that some are too narrow to share with incoming trucks, you have to go partly off road which can run the high risk of scrapping the undercarriage of the low to the ground vehicle.

Have been in Thailand for 8 years and the only bad things I have heard about their diesels is the 2.2D having head-gasket issues which Mazda fix outside of warranty as long as servicing has been done iaw the schedule. I have a Mazda 2D and it runs like a dream. Only thing ever done (apart from servicing) was to replace an O2 sensor free outside of warranty and replace the rear shock end stops.

I have owned a Commodore wagon as a second vehicle for years.I have also owned SUVs .The wagons are just much nicer to drive and much more practical.
