What's INSIDE Thor's Cave??

  • Thor is a Viking god who was mainly worshipped in Scandinavia but also in Britain. There are sacred cult sites to Thor in the UK and the Norse god of thunder also shows up in some local folklore. This video looks at a couple of interesting examples from Derbyshire and Surrey.

Have you done a video on the practice of votive offerings in water, as compared to myths such as the lady of the lake? I'm curious if the legends are a way to remember the ancient practices.

It reminds me of the Myth where Thor's hammer was stolen by a Giant and hidden deep inside the Earth.
Perhaps this "Hob's Hurst", was the Hillock / Hill /Mound that Thor's hammer was hidden under, and the Hobs were the ones who put it there!
If I were a giant looking for a place to hide the Hammer of the Gods, a hidden cave occupied by Hobs with an obsession for collecting stone axes would be an excellent choice!

    • @realtalk6195

The Illyrians and Slavs originate from opposite ends of the continent! Illyria in Roman records is mentioned as early as the 1st century BCE while the South Slavs invaded Southeast Europe in the 500s and 600s CE during Byzantine times.
Illyria spans todays Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia, western Greece and western North Macedonia. Colloquially, the Albanians are most commonly associated with Illyrians (occupying much of the same space), and the only Slavs who tend to be associated with the Illyrians are Bosniaks and to an extent Montenegrins and Bosnian Croats.
While the western reach of Illyria has varied between age and source, the one geography that's consistently been known as Illyria are Albania and its neighboring border regions.
Slavs _overall_ have nothing to do with Illyrians, not the West Slavs and East Slavs who never even made contact with them, and not most South Slavs (Bulgarians, North Macedonians, Serbs, Slovenes) who came in centuries later and never conquered the Illyrian heartland.

You point out an important distinction: It speaks to the English impulsion-being away from the moral order of the church of Rome-to make our own judgement about the moral value of a pagan figure. You see this tendency in the composition of Beowulf and in Robin Hood. Both are figures which Puritans would have iconoclasted as evil.

I love how the "Devil's Punchbowl" legend combines pagan Scandinavian lore with the Christian "Devil", which reminds me of a lot of the stories of Hans Christian Andersen like "The Marsh King's Daughter", "The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf", and many more.

Great video very interesting definitely puts us back in touch with our ancestors. and I loved the creepy hobgoblin too. There is a river in South Wales called the river Thaw i have always wondered if it had a connection to the Norse god too.

Regarding the origin of the Devil's Punch Bowl, I am reminded of one particular story from Norse Mythology:
Thor and Loki had gone on a trip to Jotunheim, and along the way they picked up a boy and his sister and met a giant. The giant had a sack of food and said that if Thor could open it, then they could have what was inside. So the giant went to sleep, and Thor tried to open the sack, except he could not no matter how hard he tried. Furious, Thor took Mjolnir and smashed the giant's head-except the giant only woke up and made commentary that insulted Thor. The giant went back to sleep, and Thor tried again, with similar results to the first time. Eventually, he gave up, and the group fell asleep.
Fast forward a bit, and the four reached Utgard, where Thor's aide, Loki, and Thor were beaten in various tasks by the members of Utgard-Loki's court. But as Thor and his companions were leaving, Utgard-Loki revealed that he had basically rigged it all: he was the giant they had met on the way to Utgard, and had not only tied a wire around the sack to keep it from being opened, but Thor's hammer had created three valleys with Mjonir. Likewise, the matchups in Utgard had been Loki vs. literal fire, Thor's servant vs. Utgard-Loki's personified thoughts, Thor vs. personified Old Age, and Thor drank from a horn that was attached to the Sea and tried to lift the Midgard Serpent in the form of a cat.
If I am forgetting details, sorry, it has been a long time since I looked at that story.

I always wondered if the 9 realms cam be identified with real places on Earth. For example Midgard is the Denmark and Southern Scandinavia peninsula. Jotunheim can be the mountains of Norway/Sweden, The Prose Edda mentions jotunheim being north of svithjod(sweden).

Hello, I was wondering is it possible to ask if you can or have plans to do a video about Norway, if not do you by chance know of any possible armor, arms(weapons), and clothing that was present in Norway during the same time period as Vendal period Sweden since in a sense the two countries were next to each other it seems as if there a blank spot in Norwegian during this certain period in Scandinavian history.
