He read it to a friend who was dying...but later himself thought more about the passage and realised that if it was true it was life changing. It speaks about how God offers people mercy and gives what we could never deserve.

Hopefully forever. I'm not British, but I know this song still has a rightful place as a reminder of our common humanity.
