The Ultimate Indonesian Food Day Trip - HUGE Nasi Liwet Feast!

During my trip to Jakarta, I mostly remained in the city. But Ken and Gratiana from cowokrakus.com/ invited my wife Ying and I to go with them and their family on an Indonesian food trip to Bogor and the surrounding region (about an hour from Jakarta).
Our first stop when we drove out of Jakarta and to Bogor was a famous place to eat Bogor style laksa at a restaurant called Laksa Bogor Pak Inin. It was exactly my kind of a restaurant, open air and local, with a wonderful friendly environment. The laksa was unlike any other laksa I’ve ever had, and it was fantastic. Laksa Bogor - 10,000 IDR ($0.72)
Next, we stopped at a place called Toge Goreng Pak Abung, which is another legendary Indonesian food stop in Bogor, Indonesia, and they are famous for serving a bean sprout snack. It was definitely a very interesting dish, including a mixture of bean sprouts and fermented soy beans. Toge Goreng - 7,000 IDR ($0.51)
Next we drove into the beautiful Indonesian countryside and to the house. After having some Indonesian snacks and refreshing coconut, we then took a hike to go look for honey. The beekeeper was sick on the day we went, so we we’re able to get any honey, but it was still a beautiful hike.
The highlight of this Indonesian food trip for me was the Sundanese style Nasi Liwet Botram family feast that we had. All the food was laid out on banana leaves, and we all sat and ate some of the most beautiful and flavorful Indonesian food. It was an incredible culinary experience.
We drove back to Bogor and stopped at Warung Nasi Ampera to eat a quick dinner, and because I wanted to try some ikan pepes. The food was alright, but nothing compared to the lunch feast we had eaten! Total price - 103,000 IDR ($7.46) for 3 plates of food
Finally, back in Jakarta, we stopped near Manga Besar to have some desserts and to finish of this incredible day of Indonesian food. Sekoteng - 12,000 IDR ($0.87), Wedang Ronde - 12,000 IDR ($0.87)
It was an incredible Indonesian food trip to the outskirts of Bogor, and a nice opportunity to get out of Jakarta for the day.
A big thank you to Ken, Gratiana, and her family for inviting us to their house country house and for the amazing food.

OMG after that feast, I couldn't eat more for the day! Also in Bogor is Taman Safari, wonderful place to visit so many animals. Nice it is so close to Jakarta. First time I had Indonesian Satay was in Bogor. So delicious.

I lived in Indonesia for 2 1/2 years. A wonderful time, beautiful people and great country with lots of future growth potential. This video is a good and accurate depiction of the travels and food in Indonesia.
The more I watch this series, the more astounded I get at how Indonesia is so similar to the Philippines. The landscape, the language, so much of the food... If the Spanish, and the Dutch, and the French hadn't parceled us off, we'd probably be one country today.

I was born and raised in Indonesia, moved to Singapore and now living in Germany.
I never knew how great it is to have food coming not from packaging or at least food that is not going through frozen process.
Every time I go back home for vacation, we have chickens, catfish in man-made pond, fresh vegetables from backyard, and there is a fish farm in a lake 15 minutes driving from our home. Together with so many types of spices, even a single type of fish can be cooked in so many ways.
Sigh, how great it would be once all these corona stuff over.

I am not a Sundanese but I spent many years in Bandung so this hits close to home. The unique taste you had was from "oncom" which is made from fungal fermentation of groundnut press cake. Oncom is widely used in Sundanese cuisine and Sundanese cuisine only, it hasn't catch on to other ethnic groups.
The name "nasi liwet" might be confusing to even Indonesians. The Javanese "sêgå liwêt" is cooked with coconut milk while the Sundanese "sangu liwêt" is without. Fortunately you had both!
The Sundanese refer to picnics and potlucks as "botram" as well. Communal meal is definitely the best way to enjoy your food.
Most Indonesians would find it fascinating that you like jengkol! The Sundanese nickname for it is "tiger's liver" and they eat it spicy. Back home, we eat it with coconut cream dip 😊

I go to Jakarta once. Like most East Asian food, Indonesian food goes all out with their spice and I like it. The only thing I don't like about my trip there tho, is their traffic.

One feeling that I get after watching this video, is how really culturally rich, naturally blessed, happy, contended, skilled, peaceful and un-overambitious people of South East Asia are.. It's too bad that each country ended becoming a colony of one European country or the other, just because they were simple and contended people and did not believe in expanding their territories or exploiting other races.. They are so peaceful, that even after being exploited /humiliated by the Europeans for so long, they don't carry any hard or revenge-ful feelings for them..
Somehow, I have a wish that maybe each South East Asian country becomes as rich, powerful & happy kingdoms, as they were many many centuries ago.. Another reason is that all countries in this region were united and shared beliefs, cultures and traditions, and India - Indonesia - Malaysia - Myanmar - Siam (Thailand) - Cambodia - Laos have a lot lot in common..
