The Alaska set will always be a sought-after collector set. Wait until Lionel and/or MTH comes out with the 100 year anniversary locomotive. Start saving your monies now lol I'm glad you got that in your collection Chris. Hold on to it!

The truck detail on the older model is amazing. I also like the gap from truck to frame better on the older model. Nice looking set for sure

I wish Lionel would bring back that older k-line tooling. They look much nicer in my opinion. Not that the new ones aren’t nice because they look great too. But k-line made an amazing model

Beautiful "set" Chris! And you know, sometimes the sets one puts together by way of improvisation are more fun than the ones that come ready-made out of the box!
The less-detailed trucks on the powered unit? If I was REALLY bothered by them I'd paint the trucks on both units flat black to minimise attention to the same but personally I don't think it's worth it, I'd just live with it.
Here's a real-life Alaska Railroad story for you. Back in the early 2000s my best friend went on a salmon fishing group trip up to Alaska and part of the package was an excursion on the Alaska Railroad. When they pulled into the station at the end of the trip the governor of Alaska was waiting for them and handed out ARR pins to all the riders. Know who the governor was?
    Sarah Palin.
Mind you, this was before anyone knew who Sarah Palin was. My friend Charlie said she was VERY nice and after he got home he sent her a Jersey Central pin! Charlie was a proud Jersey Guy and a CNJ fan as well! Got a nice "thank-you" letter back too.
He gave me the ARR pin. I've still got it.
Anyway, there's my Alaska Railroad "connection."

Very good looking consist, Chris. The livery is quite striking and eye catching. Too bad there are no passengers. That would be really nice, but you able to find the locomotives. Very nice. The livery reminds me of the Ontario Northern Railway.

Thanks Chris, your earlier teaser video caused me to seek out an unbudgeted purchase as well! Grabbed the powered unit from Nicholas Smith as well as the diner. Pieced together the 2 pack generator car plus coach and the vista dome. Was lucky enough to also find the 4 pack superliners, new, at an online auction. Not cheap, but at half of what they are going for on eBay. Thanks for the lead and inspiration to add to my Alaska collection! Love this train!

Mind sharing what other online auction I could be watching for the superliners? There's on set on ebay/trainz for an insane price.

Got mine online at Harris Auctions. Have to factor in the buyer’s premium and shipping, but still came out way better than what they are going for on Trainz or eBay. Good luck!

Nice looking train. Reminds me of a can of WD-40 with the blue and yellow color scheme. The only thing I would to add if I were in your shoes is an observation car if there is such a car. Nice review.

Great set Chris! I like the SD70s better than the F7s anyway. As for the difference in detail, the older one was actually a K Line model produced by Lionel after K Line went under. The tooling was really good other than the small fuel tank. Sadly the Lionel SD70 leaves much to be desired detail wise.

I saw them and went and got the cash after a day and literally came in the following day to buy them and they said they just were bought. Wanted to do the exact same thing with the SD70s and the superliners.

Very sharp looking train! I love the idea of repurposing dead/broken engines into non powered! Gives it a new lease on life!

Nice video. Those are some impressive passenger cars. It's too bad, though, that Lionel removed some of the truck detail on the newer locomotives. You can spot it, even from a distance. At the price-point of the newer units, I would think that they would have kept and even added some extra detail. One way or another, that is a gorgeous set.

That is a really great looking set. The blue and yellow paint scheme just pops. Great opportunity to repurpose a 'dead' engine. What had to be done to turn it into a 'dummy', so to speak?

I don’t understand why some newer toolings have less detail from their predecessor. They should be adding detail to improve the model

the 2nd one was a former K line tooling, Lionel scooped up K-line and released these when they were transitioning over to lionel. I wonder if they can still use that tooling because That is more detailed than the original Lionel tooling (The legacy model) which is from the late 90s hence the lack of detail. The SD70M/Mac,SD60 (standard cab) and GE Dash9 are old tooling from the late 90's to 2000. The SD40T-2 models are from 2003 but have a ton of see through detail.
