I used to live and work (commercial photographer) in NYC, but retired nine years ago, and left for the country; so, this video was especially nostalgic for me. I brings back memories for sure. Every Analog Insights video is a treat, with a perfect balance between usability, results and images. The XF 35 fits in well with the Agfa Optima Sensor 1035, which has a similar design sense, In fatct, your video was the deciding factor in purchasing one. The Voigtlander VF135, while not as úr, is a reasonable temptation.

Always a pleasure watching, Max! I have the cousin of the Rollei XF 35: Voigtlander VF 135. They basically are the same cameras with the same lens but just different brand. I got it from a neighbour who just gave it to me from an estate because she knew I am into photography. First time I shot with it, I was so amazed by how great the lens is! The metering, the lens, everything is pretty spot on! Cheers!

Note that there is an early version of these with brass top/bottom - black paint ,they are significantly more chunky in feel due to the extra weight and the shutter button feels nicer, they can be identified by the made in Singapore written on the back if the top plate by the viewfinder instead of on the bottom plate. Nice camera to use quickly with only focus to do .
Thanks Max, really tempted to pick up one of these from eBay in Japan. They look in excellent condition. I’m interested in your point of view with using one in low light / live music / b&w film scenarios?
Finally, a fine new video to start in 2023, Max ! Expect a price raise in 3...2....1 ! I have mine since decades, it's a good lens, and you're right Max, Rollei licensed the Zeiss lens design, back into the heyday. A pity, one can't set things manually, and the shutterspeed doesn't hit 1/1000s at least. I wished for manual control, especially exposure compensation, ISO up to ISO/ASA 3200. Zeiss Sonnar lenses feature some kind of lens glow at small apertures, the typical Sonnar glow, similar to specific Leica lenses at specific F-Stops.
I had seen these little cameras great to know the lens is so good. It gives me the same vibe as the Yashica Electro 35 GL but I suspect lighter in weight! Thank you for your review, always spot on!
As always I love your gear review because they focus on photography and photographs rather than gear per se. I had never encountered this version of the Rollei 35. So, it was very interesting to follow your video. I have to say I love the "streamlined" look of this camera. Definitely a gorgeous lens that is clean, crisp and provides great detail. As always a super interesting video that was extremely well presented.
Oh how I wish Rollei would have stayed in Germany and kept innovating. They would have been Leicas direct competitor for the betterment of all film shooters of 35mm. I have an early edition of a Rollei 35 given to me from a very good friend of mine while living in Germany. He was the origninal owner. I love that camera. It is not on par to the build quality of my Leicas but damn is it an awesome camera to use. So small and takes stunning photos. The innovation is to be respected, just as the barnack is. I am glad Leica survived. I wish the Rollei and Voigtlanders did as well. Imagine a Voigtlander Bessa built today from the same factory that was in Germany then.

A tip for manipulating the light meter is to use an ND8 filter to force it to open up the aperture if you want a shallow depth of field - or a variable ND filter which allows you to use it as DIY exposure compensation.
Great review! Something that I didn't notice you mentioning, is that the lens in this camera is radioactive. Just a heads up for when it comes to cleaning, servicing and if the glass scratches or breaks (!).

I'm relieved that I was able to get my XF35 for the lowly sum of £30 (aperture blades are sluggish to close, so they need a clean but otherwise works) the other week, as the average price of the XF35 is absolutely wild these days.

I had a Rollei XF, inherited from my father. I took all the photos in Greece with a Rollei. He took very good pictures. But I ended up going back to my own Minolta XD7. The main advantage of the Rollei is that it is light and small. The Minolta is a much more serious machine, I like it better.

I am wondering whether the exposure system of the XF35 (with fixed relationships between aperture and shutter speed) is the one Rollei had previously used in the Rolleimagic, and whether past experience with this Rolleimagic system is the reason it was chosen for the XF35 ? I prefer to use film rated at 3200 ASA and I wonder whether a red filter could be placed over just the lens itself (and not over the sensor) is a feasible option ?
No manual mode while the meter is powered by a wein cell battery (meaning meter might be off) and ISO limited is really the sad part given how great this lens is.
Thank you for your comment. I am not 100% certain but believe the fallback shutter speed is 1/30th. In general, I would recommend using this camera always with a battery. Sometimes the contacts need to be cleaned and taken care of. But then it should be good to go again.
Does anyone know, about the XF 35, what is being wrong, when the Film advance lever must being pulled double, instead of one time, as normal? I don't know, how-to fix that issue. I have no camera repair skills.
May I ask about taking exposed film through airport security , did you just put it in your bag and trust to luck or explain what it was to the X-ray people ? Cheers
I travelled in August with my family to San Francisco and had a lot of different film stocks with me. I had them in my cabin luggage and they were scanned in Frankfurt and on the way back they went three times through the scanner in SF as the security guys were concerned about my camera equipment. Making a long story short - all films survived without any damages, also the 23 years superimposed Agfachrome RSX professional. Best regards, Greg
Same experience here. In the past I typically opted for hand checks. In this case I didn’t (except for an unnecessary second scan at CDG in Paris) and all films turned out fine.

Xray scanners will always cause a slight fog to any film. It was reported you should not notice anything unless the film is Iso 800 up. The more it is xrayed the more it fogs.
8 minutes in, no spec information really about the camera. Does it have autofocus? How long does the battery last? Can I change the aperture manually? And you're absolutely wrecking it with your harsh breathing and not-so-nice ASMR swallowing. Come to the point

My very first camera. Got it gifted by my father, still have the recipe of "500 Schilling". Still take it out once in a while for short vacations.

I've been tempted to get one of these. But I think I'm going to invest in having my Rollei 35S CLA'd and repaired.

Yes, exactly. It is a E46 filter thread. Should work just fine.

I don't get the camera TBH, not at present asking prices ( no spares, no repairs possible anymore ), but the photography was beautiful.
Get the Voigtlander VF135 instead. Pretty sure it's exactly the same minus automatic flash exposure.
It's a lot cheaper, I got mine for £15

my rollei xf35 film counter doesn’t go up once per cut from 18-20 and no more from 24. Is it broken? ( i used 36cut film)

Think it was that filter that created those flares, not the Sonnar ;-)

I can fire the shutter even without the battery, any idea what's the shutter speed without a battery loaded?
