Why vinyl? CDs last longer and have bonus tracks. I can't count the number of needles I wore out until digital. If it came down to a CD or a record, knowing that the record was subpar but the cardboard was excellent, which?
And how much of the 1960s are you a student of? Civil Rights? Vietnam? Antiwar movement? The Hardhat Riots? The 1968 Police Riot in Chicago? Gimme Shelter? The polite racism MLK spoke of that existed in the north and west? The women's lib hatred of Dylan and "Just Like A Woman"? Church bombings? Hell's Angels?
It was a violent divisive decade that can't be put in one box of fashion. I remember it as one long rolling wheel of riots and violence that was rescued by The Velvets. And assassinations.
But anyone who cares about the 1960s is all right.

Nice job! Boomer-aged musician/collector here. 1966 was, IMHO, the greatest Pop year ever. Try Kinks' FaceToFace, Who's A Quick One, Pet Sounds, (and most of the original SMiLE tracks), Byrds 5D, Love's DaCapo (Side 1 at least), and of course Revolver, Absolutely Free and Blonde On Blonde you know - plus tons of astonishing Motown and Stax singles... Trouble is, '66 was a transitional year for albums being created and marketed as more than just a collection of singles and filler. So the LP did not become the "calling card" of youth music until the following year especially after Pepper... Keep up the good work, it's important.

Back in about 1988, when record stores still existed, I went into the used record section of the record store, and found all three of the first Alice Cooper albums on the Frank Zappa Bizarre/Straight label for $5 each. Ten years later I sold all three of them for $100 each.

  • @johncollier9280

Hey Abigail! Nice to know you're a Michael Nesmith fan. He frequented the music store in Carmel where I worked. I told him I thought Head was one o' the best Monkees albums 'n he wholeheartedly agreed! I was front 'n center for his 2019 concert in Sand City. His two sons were in the band 'n photographer Henry Diltz must have taken at least 1,000 photos. My pick for 1969 is It's A Beautiful Day. For 1966: Donovan-Sunshine Superman, Who-A Quick One While He's Away, Beatles-Revolver, The Psychedelic Sounds O' The 13th Floor Elevators 'n James Brown-It's A Man's Man's Man's World. A favorite Simon & Garfunkel track: Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall. I met Marianne Faithfull when I was workin' at Borders in Sand City. Thanks for the excellent video! Best wishes from John.

BTW, there is hope for the future of rock & roll. This past Saturday 3 guys around the age of 12 or so came into my store. We started talking about music. They began to throw some interesting facts about The Beatles at me! It was a thrill to talk to these 3 kids who also said they had a band in the works. To end it all, one of them asked me for Yardbirds 45's! He left with an original For your love 45 with picture sleeve & a RSD Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor 45...at a great discount of course.

@@abigaildevoe You mentioned Freak Out! Being your fave FZ lp. Several years ago I foolishly sold a yellow label original promo copy. I should have kept it but I still have the copy I bought in 1972. I did have the pleasure to interview Dweezel Zappa for my Talk N Roll show circa 2011. I also got to have the Grand Mothers on the show. I loved Frank! Got to see him 14 times. A true professional! Are you a Rutles fan? I had the pleasure of interviewing the late great Rutles & Bonzo Dog Band writer & guitarist Neil Innes in 2012. That Talk N Roll episode was shot in my record shop. I've had the shop for 30 years! If you love The Beatles (and you do!) you may want to consider going to the International Beatle Week fest in Liverpool, UK. It is always the last week of August. You could wear your best 60's clothes and you wouldn't be alone! You would also have some famous people hanging about that would gladly appear on your show. I better stop. I could talk rock & roll all day, and er ah...and all of the night. BB

When it comes to channels with people talking about their favorite music, I never search out for them, I just wait for them to come into my orbit...I never saw your channel until it popped up on my list of channels to watch. First one was the one where you talk about Sgt. Pepper. Enjoyed it, but I didn't subscribe, because I wanted to see if you came back. Sure enough, you came back several times, and I had a good time. But what finally hooked me was the Q & A show, & you were so nice to everyone, I really could sense the fun you're having, & you really are knowledgeable on the classic rock I grew up with, those 30-something minutes finally got me to smack that bell & subscribe. I feel blessed that your show came into my space, cause it easily could've bypassed my whole internet zone, and travelled round & round the globe without me ever discovering it. A movie a lot of people watching this channel might like and may not have heard of is Withnail and I. A cult British comedy made in 1986 and set in London 1969. The characters and story are loosely based on the real life experiences of director Bruce Robinson, who was an out of work actor living in a decrepit flat in 60's London with his alcoholic friend.
Loving the channel Abi, your presenting style is informative and fun. You clearly have a passion for the music you review and I love the clobber.

I didn't realize 'Withnail and I' is a period piece (recent period relative to its production, but still set in the past); that definitely piques my curiosity about it. I'd heard of the film, and knew it had a cult reputation, but have never sought it out. I actually had the opportunity not long ago to see the film screened in a repertory venue in a 35-millimeter print, but passed on it. Now I feel like I should have made the effort to go.

Making clothes must be a lot of fun. My mom enjoyed it a lot . Some girls I knew in high school; in the70'z; made some of, and also modified alot of thier own clothes. I always liked bowling shirts; from the thrift store. KindA rockabilly. Ya know? I like that dress with the frills, nice. That pasley shirt looks like something Davy Jones; of the Monkeys would've worn. Oh all the girls liked Davy. I remember my 6th grade teacher King fun of him; and that missing off some of the girls un the class. I went to Stimson high in Huntington NY. Bob Busch; who made the TV show The Wonder Years was a friend. Unreal huh. Thanks for the great showz. Things Re lot better now. The last 8 months were kinda tuff for me. Alot better now. Your shows always make Mondays fun. Your still my favorite librarian. Thx. Don

I keep seeing your references to MC5. But this is one of those things that make me think I've been moved to a parallel universe from my own. Because I have never heard of this band before. And I thought I had a pretty good handle on the classic rock groups, even if I don't have all the albums.

holy shit - I cannot urge you enough to check out their live debut, "Kick Out The Jams", from 1969. They were contemporaries to the The Stooges and often get brought up in the conversation, I think the comparison is apt. Less artsy and more bluesy than Stooges, but just as loud and incendiary.

i saw Dylan in 2004 at Boone North Carolina and his harmonica solo on Every Grain of Sand was a sublime experience. it could have lasted 50 seconds or 50 minutes i dont even know. but it is one of the greatest musical experiences of my life

gosh when he brought out the harmonica for the first time the whole place clapped and cheered! i was kind of frozen for a second, definitely had to soak in that i was seeing dylan in the flesh haha

      Wow!
I saw Dylan in concert and he was awful. Couldn’t tell what he was playing.
At least I have the memory of it being the only concert I went to with my father…

    Hey Abigail,
I am very grateful to you for answering my question and can't wait for the video.😍
When you make the video you can also mention that there is a huge difference between the US and UK version.🙈😂
I spent over €60 on the UK pressing and was slightly pissed that White Rabbit wasn't on the record.🤣
    I wish you a nice weekend. 😘

YES i've heard about this - my friend was SO excited to find his copy of surrealistic pillow, then took it home and found out it was the UK track listing HAHA. i do love talking about the differences between US and UK albums so i'll be sure to cover that with surrealistic pillow

I grew up in San Francisco and came of age in 1968. The music the psychedelic light shows with the blooming of all these amazing albums that you are reviewing. If you imagine growing up, listening to FM radio and hearing all this music come out every week or month that was really what it was about being a hippie in San Francisco going to the Fillmore and Winterland in Avalon ballroom, seeing all these bands play live . The liberal thinking was almost a rebellion. I remember girls couldn’t wear pants to my high school and we had to fight for those changes. basically, this music and that generation created an industry known as rock ‘n’ roll. if you’re interested, I have a TH-cam channel called “Brotherhoodof Lightshow current” I, cover 60s and 70s music. My concert experience shows start with the Beatles at the Cow Palace in 1966 and go all the way through my music career working with The Allman Brothers Band. Love your show. Thanks.

Your show s are really edited well. I'm not exaggerating. Your shoes are a good study. The editing you do makes them have alot of personalty. They are a good study. Oh you just answered my question. You do your own production.

I recently visited Rob Tyner’s grave site. It has his stage name and his real name on the stone. Oddly, it’s placed in the children’s section of the cemetery.

Just discovered you Abigail. LOVE your podcasts. I own Sunset Records in Somerset, Mass., I had the pleasure to play The Cavern Club in Liverpool in Liverpool, late August (it was fab of course!) with my band, The Star Club, I had a local r&r talk show (Talk n Roll) and a few of the episodes are on You Tube: ( Ian McLagan, The Yardbirds, and Creedence Clearwater Revisited). And lastly, I have had the pleasure to meet Patti Boyd on several occasions. Keep up the great job! Bob Boyer
