- In the third and final installment of the 1935 Jamboree Scrapbook, we not only get to experience the final stages of their trip back to California, including a camping stop in Glacier National Park, but we also learn about the three Scouts responsible for this epic journal of their adventures. The McCurry brothers served in the Army during World War II, returned home to run their father’s business, and continued to serve in Scouting. In 1976, they were both recognized with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award for their contributions. At the time, they were the only brothers to be recognized in this manner. Howard Topping also served in the Army during WW II. He was wounded in 1944 and received a Silver Star for his actions in November 1944. Following the War, Topping returned to Bank of America and eventually became a Vice President of the Bank. He was also active in the American Red Cross, serving on the National Board of Directors.
Wrapping up this series of videos, I had the opportunity to travel to New York City and see some of the same sights: Rockefeller Center, NBC Studios, and Times Square, which these Scouts visited in 1935. It was almost surreal knowing they had been at these same locations all those years ago.
