    Gotta say. I owned a few night crawlers and always sell them cause axial and trx4 is more appealing. But seeing the crawling capabilities of it. Makes me wanna keep the one I just acquired.

    The night crawler gets a bad wrap but mine is stock other than a wheels and tires and 4mm axle hub extensions and it out performs all my axials and has now been my truck of choice for competitions . Had it 5 years and never broke a thing I love it just not much aftermarket support for it

    People hate the worm gears but they provide more throttle control at low speeds, and better torque and drag brake. I see this as a plus I don't like using excessive wheel speed when crawling anyways. Everyone has their own style crawling, great video !

  • @michaelc3416
    @michaelc3416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, I know this is an older video, but as a follow up to my last comment, yep... In stock form, it did ok, but was sloooowww AF. Stuck a set of Proline Trenchers in Predator compound mounted on Injora 1.9 beadlocks with 17mm hubs (hubs that come with wheels are 10mm, so these add 7mm to the track width on each side, and brass wheel weights on all four corners. Stock tire/wheel weighs 4.1oz. New tire/wheel/weight setup is 8oz each. Much more planted now. Then I threw in the cheap Axial 27T, a HW 1080 (for the 3S and 7.4V BEC) and an all SS gear 305oz servo. TOTALLY different animal! Still slow crawls just as well, but now has wheel speed for launching up steep inclines and hard bumping over obstacles. Also even has a trail speed above walking pace so can now be used as a trail truck in between obstacles without walking all over the back of the truck. It's actually a REALLY fun truck now, with just those simple and cheap mods. Might be even a little better with a HH Crawlmaster 550 13T, just for a bit more torque. Not that it's lacking now, but ya know.... ;-) Definitely a keeper for me!

      I am having a really hard time with my NC, motor keeps smoking. Thought this was only on 3S, but now confirmed even on 2S. Stock motor and esc. Do you know if a Titan 550 21T be a good alternative? Someone has it available here locally from his TRX6

    • @michaelc3416
      @michaelc3416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Glenn.J If it's smoking the motor on the stock electronics with 2S you may want to make sure you don't have any binding, or excessive drag anywhere in the drivetrain. I mean, these are brushed motors so won't last forever, especially if ran hard and hot and for longer periods. Use a temp gun to monitor your temps. But, under "normal use" I haven't found my setup to get excessively hot running a full 3S battery pack.
      The 21T Titan would likely be a good alternative, IF you can make it fit. I can't say for sure on the Titan, but I did try to fit the Holmes Hobby 550 I had on hand. No dice. Just not enough room for a 550 motor in there. It "might" could be made to fit, with some mods, but I can't remember the details now, and didn't want to start down that path, so just stuck the the 540 can motor. Works fine for me. 👍

    • @Glenn.J
      @Glenn.J 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelc3416 ok great thanks. This is a brand new rig, and the first time it smoked, it was a extreme crawl location and that too on 3S, yesterday it was nothing, and also was on 2S. Let me see if i can fit a Titan here. If not which HH 540 would you recommend, there are quite few options on there with different Ts like 12T, 21T, the crawl master and trail master etc, so it's kinda confusing. Thank you for replying.

    • @michaelc3416
      @michaelc3416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Glenn.J Keep in mind, the NC's stock electronics aren't designed for 3S. So, unless you've upgraded the ESC I'd recommend sticking with 2S. As far as the HH motors... The TrailMaster series uses a 3 slot armature. The CrawlMaster series uses a 5 slot armature which makes them a bit smoother. A VERY general rule of thumb is that the number of turns used in a 3 slot is ROUGHLY double that of a 5 slot, for equivalent performance. So, say, a 3 slot TM 27T would be close to a five slot CM 13T. John has a ton of videos on his youtube channel that does a good job of explaining the differences in the motors. I'd probably either go with a 35T TM for close to stock performance, or a 27T TM if I wanted a little boost in motor speed. OR, I may go with either a 13T or 16T CM. There's also a chart on the HH site that allows you to cross reference his various offerings in terms of KV rating (engine speed). Just remember that generally speaking, the lower turn count motors are going to be more sensitive and prone to smoking if pushed too hard. Whatever motor you select, I highly recommend buying an IR temp gun and keep an eye on motor temps until you learn what temps you can expect under certain situations. And, make SURE you don't have any binding in the driveline anywhere. Too much drag in the axles will definitely make the motor work harder, heat up faster, and be more prone to just getting too hot and giving up the ghost.

Have a new set of wheels and wheel weights, as well as the JConcepts Creeper body coming, and already have a better servo to install. Will give the stock tires a try and go from there... Need to look into the high clearance links a bit yet though. Also have an Axial 27T motor I may decide to stick in it just to see if it helps with wheel speed. Planning an LCG rig in the near future, but really looking forward to playing with this little thing as my first dedicated crawler rig. It was just one I had laying around. Not sure about the motor but I’ve had really good luck with the 1080 esc! You can pick one up here!

    I ordered the high clearance links and somehow they are not matching up. I have one side with very slight thread sticking out. Do you have to change the shocks out? I also put the upper links and now I don't know if it's completely out of whack. The stock shocks won't compress all the way. Thanks. If you can send me pictures that would be awesome I don't know if you have a Instagram or Facebook account that I can follow and maybe you could show me pictures of how you did yours in detail.

Can you just put any 1/10 scale truck body on and then trim it right back to allow the wheel flex etc ? Noting that these chassis have side mounting pins etc ? Thanks

    Your links are upside down

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those S shaped links suck. If you turn them then there is a really low spot that sticks out below the skid just near the skid. Rather have the low spot near the tire where the tire will catch and pull over the rock so to me No they’re not upside down. I ran them both ways on my Capra and prefer this honestly. Best bet is to ditch these links though. Much better options out there now.

Lowest point of them near the axle because by the time they are hitting at that point the tires will catch and pull you over. These have a couple bends to them. This might be a dumb question but does having the shocks compressed at an angle like you have better or worsen the amount of travel the shock has? I have an scx24 with the double barrel shocks and was wondering if I should move them form the stock mounts. Thank you!

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For this truck that’s just the angle they mount because of the smaller length of the chassis. On the scx24 I honestly just move mine around and see what performs best for each truck. Depending on shocks and overall truck setup some will work better angled like that and some will do better with a bit more straight up. I usually prefer them angled though myself. I also drop the shocks down to the frame rails on the scx24 often. Gives a bit more belly clearance for those sharp crest. Some people don’t like it and say it raises the cog but for me it can be offset with a little weight down low so I prefer more clearance in the belly.

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think more shock angle will lessens the effectiveness of the shock. Makes it feel softer and also gives it more travel since they now move in an arch while they compress. It is common on some of the competition crawlers to do this. If it is done correctly, it can improve your articulation. But it could also make the suspension too soft and spongy if installed at to much of an angle...
      like Matt said, it’s worth playing around with the mounting positions and see what works best for your truck, terrain, and driving style
