    Another great review Maarten. No other reviewer goes as in-depth as you in regards to settings and features and the practical use of them and also demonstrate them to the user instead of just glancing over them in a list of bullet points. So even after seeing a lot of reviews on a new camera model, I always look forward to see your take and review.

    Seems like this is quickly becoming the go-to camera for many youtubers as well. Easy to understand with those video functions. :)

      A little pricey for youtubing, but yes, it's great for all kinds of video production. There are less expensive and lighter Panasonic models that are equally good if youtube is the destination. I'll get to the GX85 soon.

    Blown away by the video quality of GH5! As well by the detailed and elaborate review of yours. Like the rest of your videos which are always very "in-deep" reviews and extra ordinary, with an injection of sophisticated publicistic style.

    Fabulous review, Maarten! Probably the most useful I've seen. A LOT of information packed into thirty minutes. It's going to require a long time to unpack and digest---but it will be well worth it.
    My experience is auto focus is a dumpster fire---far inferior to even the diminutive a6000. I believe Panasonic is obliged to fix it---I'm sure it's firmware.
    Otherwise, it's a mind bending camera.
    Now give is 3 levels of internal ND filters like the fz2500 and this camera will become a "Ding an sich."
    Danke viel Mals!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment. It's certainly not as speedy as some - but I found the autofocus, particularly continuous with face detect to be quite powerful and useful (certainly in that aspect better than the A6000). Yes, ND, particularly for video oriented cameras is always greatly appreciated. Danke für deine Gedanken.

    Great review as always. I felt the vlog section looked no where near as sharp on your face as for the doll and that the whole scene appeared to have the same focus sharpness. Could you comment on the ability of the GH5 to maintain focus during vlogging with a shallower depth of field? Many thanks :)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate your kind words, thanks. For the vlogging scene, I couldn't use a larger aperture because it was so bright, and it clearly loses my face intermittently, but I thought its vlogging performance - particularly as I'm walking - was above average, which is why I included that scene - but these examples and demonstrations are provided to help you judge.

    Great and informative content as always! May I ask an opinion on mics? With a budget of 75 euros, which shotgun microphone would you recommend between the Rode VideoMicro, the Rode VideoMic Go and the Takstar SGC-698? Thank you for your attention and videos, feel free to advice other models.
    Cheers!

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I assume each of those are within your budget. I've played with (but not reviewed) the Rode products, I'd probably take the smaller/lighter VIdeoMic Go.

    One of the best & informative reviews I have seen (your attention to detail in both the Olympus OMD1 mark II & GH5 is very much appreciated). I have a Panasonic GM5 and want to upgrade to either Olympus OMD1 II or GH5. Ease of use is important. Given my split between photo & video is 80/20, which of these cameras will produce better image quality photo?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind words, always appreciated. Between those two I would judge the image quality to be primarily dependent on the lens. With the same lens, I'd judge image quality to be pretty much identical. Dpreview has more detail than I can provide.

      This is good to read. It confirms my decision regarding the camera... I really want to like the GH5 more on so many levels. After fondling both in the camera shops many times, I just like the look, feel and intuitiveness of the GH5. Therefore, I am also going to start with native lenses, ie. 12-35 and maybe the 35-100mm for dual IS. After that, I'll seriously consider fast primes as needed. Thanks for a great vid, I will use it for reference once I have GH5 in hand.

    Great detailed review, now that you have tested the EM12 and the GH5
    1-which one would you purchase for all around photography and video?
    2-any suggestions for a great all around lens for the one you would choose?
    3-and on the photography level do you think the EM12 and GH5 are about the same?
    Thanks again for your excellent work your videos are the best reviews on the internet and i truly look forward to seeing them God bless

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, the kind words are appreciated.
      1) GH5
      2) I probably don't have enough experience with the wide variety available, but really like the Olympus 12-100. High quality and versatile.
      3) The EM-1 does not succeed in meeting all of its specifications, which is both aggravating and disappointing. Although they are both a little overly gimmicky (not that I object to lots of capabilities and interesting features) the GH5's implementations are a little more straight-forward and robust.

  • @TheFoxwiz

    How would the GH5 handle image stabilization with Olympus lenses like the 75-300 F4.8-6.7 and the 14-150 4-5.6? Would video be more stabilized with Panasonic lenses? I currently have an OM-D E-M1 Mark ii, but I am interested in 4k 60p video.

    Hi Maarten,
    it was a pleasure to watch your review of GH5. I own this camera since a month and mostly shoot stills. I wonder if during your tests you experienced what I deem a possible bug when you use ISO auto.
    In this setting you always see a +/-0 icon replacing the EV meter. That's OK until camera can adjust exposure within available iso range. But when you exceed iso range you still see +/-0, whereas other cameras, such as the little sister GX80/85, redisplay the EVmeter so you can react accordingly adjusting your SS or F aperture.
    If you still have a GH5 at hand can you please try to replicate the situation so I will know whether it's a common "feature" or a problem peculiar to my unit? BTW I have firmare version 1.1.

    Wow, both impressed by the GH5's capabilities and your expertise on understanding them! The GH5's video prowess seems impressive (also overwhelming) but too much for me. That is why I choose the Panasonic G9. The G9 also has amazing capabilities but more on the stills side. But no slouch for video. Surprised you haven't reviewed the G9 or the GH5s. The Sony A7 III and Fuji XT-3 seem to be getting the most TH-cam coverage but I think the G9 and GH5s might be the best under-the-radar options. Maybe you'll review them?

    Excellent review - thank you. I'm seriously thinking of buying the GH5 (mainly for video use) but unsure about which lens to use. I plan only to have a single lens to cover all needs & I'm thinking of the 12 > 35 F2.8 constant aperture, but it's £400 more expensive than if I go for the kit lens. Do you think it's worth the money & do you have alternative recommendations? - thanks - Peter.

    I love the GH5 feature arrangement for Custom Settings through a physical dial on the top, but can these be changed during filming?, or do I have to stop, then change the Custom setting & then start recording again? For example if I have 4K 60P set for C1 & 180 FPS on C2 could I move the selector during filming, to move from 4K to Slomo & then back again to 4K without damaging the camera? - I realise I’d have to “tidy it up” in the edit, or cover the transition with B Roll, but if the camera allows that, it would be incredible

    Thank you for a great video! If I was looking a camera for both photo and video for product promotion (maybe like 70% photos and 30% video) for my business (online, no big prints)... and I was looking for a nice shallow depth of field look and sharp images for product shots and footage (and some slow motion)... Would you recommend the a6500 or the gh5? I was leaning towards the a6500 because it seemed I could get better results with aps-c fast lenes (native and others like the awesome sigma 18-35), compared to getting similar results with the gh5 that would demand expensive lenses and/or speedboosters. From my understanding the a6500 offers slightly sharper images, and while the 422 video of the gh5 is nice... I don’t think it makes too much of a difference when your planning to publish your photos a videos online which always means compression. I sorry for all this rambling... I just want to make a good decision. What would you recommend???

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Both are good choices, but you're right a lens with a wide aperture might be more expensive for the GH5, as the sensor is smaller (the aperture has to be wider for the same effect). What caught my eye was slow motion - the GH5 is more capable with a higher frame rate (180). I'm waiting for the data rate upgrade to judge on 10 bit, 422 and the 180fps - in my mind even 150Mbps is too much compression. But your money for camera and lens could go further with the A6500 (or even A6300).

    • @electrichimp
      @electrichimp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maarten Heilbron thank you for your quick response!! Yes the slow motion in the gh5 is slower and has a little better quality... but as I just need ‘some’ slow motion for parts of the promo footage I want to make... I feel the a6500 is more than enough (the test slow motion footage I’ve found online from the a6500 is still very nice). Plus, the a6500 has continuous AF and even audio on it’s slow motion which is nice. At the end of the day, I need more a jack of all trades... a camera that is good for photos (which is still like 70% of what I need it for) and videos. And though gh5 is certainly a better video camera (specially considering it’s higher reliability for pro users who depend on good battery life and no overheating), and produces very respectable stills... I feel the a6500 is a better fit for me, who need first a stills camera and second (close second) a video camera, who doesn’t shoot events and doesn’t mind the battery life and ocasional overheating, and who wants that shallow depth of field for my product shots. The a6300 is very nice, but since I have my eye on that sigma 18-35... I feel the IBIS of the a6500 is definitely worth the extra investment. Sorry I ended up rambling again... it’s just that (AGAIN) I want to make the right investment. 😁

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are good reasons. And there is software that creates smoother slow motion if it's not slow enough (or smooth enough). Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Hi Maarten. I'm a retired cinematographer, so good video is important to me. The Olympus 12-100 f4 lens you mention in the opening is very tempting for this application, yet it's not reviewed here. In particular, MF is critical for video. Is the Olympus lens usable with MF? Most electronically focused lenses aren't. I recently sold my Sony RX10 IV for this reason. Thanks for your excellent content.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. This was a review of the camera, not the lens. However, please help me understand what would make a lens not usable with MF?

    • @petermclennan6781
      @petermclennan6781 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaartenHeilbron I appreciate that the review was of the camera, however I found the mention of the Olympus lens very tantalizing. "Focus-by-wire" lenses lack sufficient precision to permit manual focus, especially follow-focus. The ones I've tried depend on the velocity, not the positioning of the operator's input to position the lens. The faster you move the ring, the greater the distance it moves. If you move the ring slowly, nothing happens. Small, precision moves are impossible in my experience. My Sony was hopeless at MF. Frustrating, given the effective magnification offered by its otherwise excellent lens system.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petermclennan6781 Ah, yes. Well, you already knew the answer. There are very, very few lenses that are not focus by wire, and they will nearly all be designated as cine lenses and they will inevitable be much more expensive than this lens. If you need a lens with a defined travel for manual focus for video/cine use, you have a very small selection in the M43 space.

  • @adamchen279
    @adamchen279 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's report of AF not working too well and the IS rocks left and right a little. Do you encounter the same issues?
    It's really expensive for a micro four third sensor camera, don't you think? Why not a Sony A6500? And for a little bit more, A7S2.
    I think it's strange. Professionals might want better hardware while freelancer may not care for all the features, leaving this camera to the hardcore freelancers or small time professional videographers. Otherwise, there are other Panasonic cameras that shoot 4K and stuff, for blogging and TH-cam. So I'm not exactly sure what this camera is for. It's really big for a micro four third, too.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was happy with the AF - but it doesn't offer the same speed the competition does. I also think it requires some familiarization to figure out the best mode setting for the specific scene, as there are more options than most. But as the vlogging scene indicates, while it works well to be both steady and accurate (and it's much better than most in this regard) it's not yet as rock solid as I'd like. While it doesn't drift away quickly when it loses face detection (I've set the focus area in the general spot where I expected my face to be as a backup) there is room for improvement.
      Pros use cameras in this price class as disposable (according to my dealer). They buy a bunch just to get one specific shot where a larger, more expensive camera either won't fit or might be jeopardized. For that audience, the ability to have cinema 4K, 10 bits and a little bit of extra colour detail (4-2-2) will be very welcome (as well as some of the other pro features) - but primarily once the higher data rate arrives. While those Sony cameras are good performers and offer excellent quality and SLog, they don't do C4K, which I find an awkward omission - Sony is just not headed for the same audience.

    Way too too many video settings.. such crazy time to prepare the camera for recording. Also if you need so much time you can't do in fast situation. Really necessary tons of custom grid and focus point for a normal recording? Because if you set that you can't move then, on the other side if you need fast video recording movement you can't handle so much settings in a sec.
    A great camera, but so much settings is crazy for a still video recording and too much for a fast change while you have fast moving subjects.
    Btw complete review as always. :)
