Amazing experience. Playing against anyone in the top 10 in the world in any sphere of sport or endeavour is phenomenal in a world of +7,000,000,000 souls.
Well, ding is world's number 4 out of the number of chess players in the world, not out of the world's population because not everyone plays chess. And that goes for anything. That's why we separate women's chess from men's even though it's a non physical sport.
Been watching your comtent for years now. I really like your respect for the game and appreciate your humility. Always a pleasure to learn from you. Thanks for doing this. It is much appreciated.
been following the channel for a few years, good to see you nearing 100k John, you totaly deserve it and it's been long overdue. I agree with the comment below, that before watching it, even though it's a 4th rated GM world, I always believe you can win, that's how gr8 you are bro! Cheers
Hey John. I bought your chessable essential London system video one. Looking forward to it. I only bought it because I knew how well u explain things and how much I enjoy watching you. Thanks man keep up the awesome content!
Great game John!! I saw this one live and thought you did very well given the speed and accuracy with which ding played, particularly after qd4+. It was amazing to watch him whip out such strong moves so effortlessly. Glad you made the most of it!

John how proud does it make you as a IM to battle evenly with the #4 rated player in the world? That has to boost your confidence! Great instructive video.
At that level, winning by a pawn isn't really playing evenly. That's usually about the best that elite players can do is to win by a pawn. John played an excellent game (much better than I would have), but Ding did what he had to do to win it.
I also feel honored to be able to see and hear your coments about this game , you deserve all the good things that are coming to you in the chess world
You are a good role model because despite the strength of Ding you were "spoiling for a fight." You are always ready to play your absolute best and confident enough to go toe-to-toe with #4 in the world. If not for the fans or anyone, but for yourself and your chess. #confidence
I saw you playing this game live and it was breathtakingly exciting! Ding Liren is such a calm and humble guy but wow he's a beast! Thank you for all of your amazing content JB! :D
Great game, John! Thanks for sharing it! At 16:58 you mentioned Qh3 would lead nowhere after his h6 move, but then you could just go Qxh6+. If Kxh6 then Nxf7+ getting the Queen back with double attack on the Rooks. Even losing the Bishop on e2, white would be better after taking the Rook on c8.
Ding Liren is now ranked 3rd in the world, in every time control. He's a serious contender for the World Championship, as he matches up well with Magnus Carlsen.
You played a brilliant game John, you should be extremely proud of yourself with that calibre of a performance against a world no.4! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insight with us yet again. Your videos are so always so enjoyable to watch and your channel is my favourite TH-cam channel by a distance. Wishing you nothing but happiness and success in all facets of your life in 2019 and beyond from across the Atlantic! Chess isn't the biggest sport in Ireland but you've one massive fan here 🇮🇪
Gray game John! Loved all the insight into your mentality while playing especially, so thorough and never a dull moment in 40 minutes. Only bad thing was I wish you could have recorded and commentated live too and so we can see exactly how long every move took! Watch for ding Liren if he's not already on your radar? Last month he just broke the longest game unbeaten streak that was held by Tal by getting 100 unbeaten games against the strongest opponents ever, and he's one of only 4 players ranked over 2800 right now, and only like 10-15 players in all of chess history has gotten over 2800.. It's a very exclusive club.. There's probably more world champs than 2800+ players. And IMO, he's the best current future challenger to Carlsen after caruana lost. How can he not be on a chess fans radar? Even more so because of his uncompromising aggressive and creative style.
Thanks man, happy you liked it! If you're curious about the time expended per move, check the link to the game on Chess.com I posted in the description. I believe it gives that info. And re: Ding, despite his incredible accomplishments, I feel he's unjustly less known to the casual chess player. Last year Magnus and Fabiano obviously dominated the mainstream chess headlines, but I agree - this next Candidates cycle is Ding's tournament to win. Thanks again for watching and for your nice comment!
Well I’d say that was a pretty damned good attempt against the world no 4. I watched to see how you’d play after watching your ‘journey to’ series. Kudos indeed.
First time here, thoroughly enjoyed your commentary, so impressed with your game, it's 2020 and I think Ding could be Magnus'ss opponent if he wins the Candidate's, despite Fabiano's fantastic win at the Tata Steel, he's got a bit of kryptonite about him, when it comes to Magnus lately.
I studied books for 20 years and played in a chess club for 10. I quit 6 years ago, more because of "club mentality" than chess, but find myself playing over chess puzzles and reading Chessbase.com again, recently. I will say that this is a fantastic channel. You are very giving. Even at my mediocre rating, I understand chess and chess players. Its rare to get such an insight into the decision making. So subtle how Ding beat you. Its sometimes only 1 tempo. So subtle how you beat lower and similar rated players. They are left feeling not quite sure what you did, or what they did wrong. Fascinating to see you play Ding. What a pleasure.
love watching your videos, you have inspired me to play this game, thank you for all your uploads they are incredibly helpful to me ( a complete stranger), Thank you again!!!
When he moved rook to D8 he was also protecting his trapped knight. Had you been able to play Rook B5 following your rook D4 move, you'd have gained a free piece. Ding Liren protected against both a potential fork and a trapped knight with that move. I was sort of sitting there excited that maybe you were going to trap his knight but I guess there's no such thing as getting a free piece from a GM. Genius move and imo my favorite of the match from him. You played a solid game, all things considered. This dude is just... kinda crazy.
Great game! I have enjoyed it. This shows how much endgame knowledge they actually have at that level. Very instructive game aswell. Ding Liren makes it look so easy to play. Very impressive. Thanks for explaining his intentions John Bartholomew I learned a lot cause of it.
