Nietzsche said in his "case of Wagner" that he listened the opera 20 times. And, I listened 100 times in 3 months after reading the book. The first opera that I ever listened to.
I bought a VHS copy of this about 15 years ago, and have watched it at least 25 times. The BEST Carmen presentation EVER. And I've seen it on stage at least six times.

@@jasonfowler635 You should see the opera. There are several versions of it available on TH-cam. Carmen is a 19th century melodramatic story about a Spanish military officer, Don Jose, who falls in love with a sexy Gypsy cigarette girl and runs away with her to the mountains to become a smuggler. She rejects him for a bullfighter, and Don jose kills her. Stupid, simple story, but some of the most beautiful music ever.
Still the best version of Carmen I have ever seen - Julia Migenes-Johnson is the perfect vision of Carmen and incorporates the Sevillana passion like a pro! The film was made in Ronda de la Frontera - a small town in Andalucia that still looks the way it did in the 15th century. Fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing this great film!
My great grand mother sung opera and did this and Madam Butterfly professionally in Nottingham around 1938, this is a window to my very special great grand mother....love it!
+CFITOMAHAWK2 I have no idea as to whether or not Danny DeVito speaks Italian and neither do you, I'm sure. But what you just said makes no sense. One's ethnicity has nothing to do with WHERE they were born. But I guess that's a bit over your head...just saying.
Julia Migenes is the Carmen by which all other Carmens are measured. After hearing this, the others seem lacking. This is by far the best version of the Habanera that I have ever heard. Migenes has a magnificent voice. Her flirty yet powerful performance perfectly embodies her character's wild and reckless sensuality, and shows the irresistible effect she had on men. In the story, the other women in the village all hated Carmen, and with good reason. She stole their men right and left.
Wow...Now I need to watch the movie...My boy's are gonna be so mad cos this is gonna be my saturday night plan...when we're all drinking and the curfew has ensured they can't leave...Musical education shall happen by FORCE cos this is just AMAZING!

We had to watch this in my music class in 8th grade, everyone thought it would be horrible and were wishing they were in the other music class (that was learning guitar) by the end of the class my teacher made everyone love this opera.
despite disconnected breathes here and there, still one of my favorite rendition of all time. What a voice that complements the soul of French sound, anticipating the coming of the Edith Piaf singing style.
Carmen is a 1984 French-Italian film directed by Francesco Rosi. It is a film version of Bizet's opera, Carmen. Julia Migenes stars in the title role, Plácido Domingo as Don José, Ruggero Raimondi as Escamillo, and Faith Esham as Micaela. Lorin Maazel conducts the Orchestre National de France. - Wikipedia
I owned this DVD some years ago and one day it cracked right across the middle, and I could never watch the riveting sexy Julia Migenes-Johnson become my ultimate Carmen ever again. Trouble is, Julia has spoiled me for any other opera singer trying to depict Carmen! I miss this film and its music so much. So thanks so much for posting this.
Truly a brilliant piece with many inticate, yet meaninful ideas set into a section. Deception, is the biggest idea here. This idea of trust me at your own risk because I can not be tamed or tied down.

because the composer is french lol
I love it for some reason it adds a bit more sexiness to it
