Goodness this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. My son changed schools last year and thank goodness we did. Yes the special options classes are hard to get into. We went public mainstream. The first school was a disaster his second school is amazing he has highest level of support. 1:1 SSO and he is doing so well. Mind he did go to a special school to assist with his behaviours. for 6 mths in year 1-2 this was before we found out he had pathological demand avoidance

RaisingAutism it’s the hardest decision to make. I often fight myself with decisions I’ve made. Parenting life 😞

I used to be a special needs teaching assistant in the UK. Ive done the mainstream schools and the special needs ones too. I feel like the mainstream school is a bit taugher on the kid. At my school there was a full on 10-12 kids in a class, where 1-2 kinds were special :) I had 1-1 time with them but it was harder for them during the day to keep up, be involved in the classes that they could attend with the group, even tho they basically had me.
Special needs school was a different situation, 5-6 kids in the class, a main teacher and then another 2-3 teaching assistants. The kids had constant attention and 1-1 work, was not that demanding either. It can be more slow but at least they dont just get lost during the day and get home with nothing really done. But that again, it was the UK.
I can understand how hard this decision can be, send my support and love to you all xx

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to support them whilst supporting an entire mainstream class! I think we are leaning towarda a special needs school. Cant wait to chat with you more, would love for you to subscribe!

My son is 5yrs( 6 in Nov) ASD level 2. He has been doing early intervention since 4. we transitioned him to school this year. Starting with half an hour a day an increasing by 15mins each week. He has 2 SLSO ( support workers) an he has funding through Department of education for the school. We do have a communication book that is filled out just a few notes each day. It's alot! An can be very scary for your family. You are doing a great job! Mum knows best!. You know what your boy needs an what he will respond to best. Feel for ya. Good luck hun 💙❤️

@@aussieautismfamily we are going great thanks. Considering the year we have all had. My son is still increasing his time at school ( although they are on holidays atm) he will go back to 1hour an 45 mins. His next transition is to be present for the lunch bell an see an experience the rush of kids. One step at a time hey. Visual aids have been added around the school too. To help him stay on track with tasks... toileting, library etc. It's all a process. Whatever works for our kids hey. 😊💙

Oh Jess, such a hard topic, I feel for you. Happy to email you or catch up for a cuppa and chat if you need.
Not sure if you remember me, but we met when you came to our house for work and then figured out I knew your Mum too. Don't want to put to much info here in public.

2 of our school aged children attend a special needs school, as they struggled in the mainstream setting, they need one to one support, and the mainstream school could only offer this support a couple of hours per week. They are both thriving in their new school 😊 3 of our children are in mainstream, the 2 in high school have an excellent support program. Our primary aged child in mainstream is managing but it could be better, unfortunately she does not meet the strict criteria for attending a special needs school. We also have a 4 year old in a 3 year old kinder program, I am not sure if he will now meet the criteria for special needs school. Sometimes the decision is out of our control because of the strict criteria, resulting in children falling between the cracks. This is so sad.

Autism Family Journey I’m so surprised they only offered such little help via public. My son has been really lucky with excellent advocates who have made sure his education is successful. He has 1:1 support and has had it for four years thankfully. He has done amazing this year.

It's a big decision, one you both won't take lightly, have looked at a mainstream with a support class, your eligible through his diagnosis, ask the public school of a list. There's long waiting lists too. Xo

One issue some people have with special needs schools is kids picking up undesirable behaviours that other kids have. On a different topic i have several friends with boys on the spectrum and not putting them into formal schooling until they were 6 years old is a decision they have been glad they made.

I have heard about this! Definitely something to consider. I think we are leaning towards sending him at 6 too!
