Wow, what happened to our Presidential debates? These men actually had to give intellegent, well-thought out, articulate answers to very specific and precise questions. What a revolutionary idea.
I was 18 when this debate took place. A lot of people forget this was a tight race, even though things were bad under Carter, with many still being undecided before the debate. The main reason was a lot of people still had this image of Reagan being a belligerent warmonger who was going to send American troops all over the place. The one thing this demonstrated, besides showing Reagan could stand toe-to-toe with Carter in a debate, was that he was not the scary war-loving monster many tried to portray him to be. It played a key role in turning what was close race into a landslide for Reagan.
+lorilemonade Obama's good at giving speeches, but stutters way more than Reagan. Reagan's voice is a strange combination of soothing and bold, and is way more persuasive
Amazing how respectful the moderator and panelists were with their questions. Moreover, how respectful Pres. Carter and Pres. Reagan were as well to one another. In contrast with today, the Presidential candidates and debates are a clown show not to mention out right sickening.
+John S you have to keep in mind the lust for ratings. I'm not against it, but when you mix capitalism, ratings, and political commentary into a modern day world of twitter and other social media, you get today's modern debates
+John S It's even more amazing when you think about how deeply Reagan and Carter despised one another, yet they kept the whole debate at a very professional level.
+MrSihrus It's not only ratings today but the ability to grab and keep the attention of viewers. Many Americans today are, unfortunately, too mentally lazy to sit and watch an intellectual conversation, even one as important as a presidential candidate debate. Today if a TV show doesn't spoon-feed you controversy or egregious sex or violence, it will not be around long.
Naghi Astnei I didn't say he was wrong, I said he was a fuddy duddy. Politics is and has always been a blood sport, Reagan said some harsh things about his opponents as well, let's not pretend politics has always been super civil. With the exception of Hillary and Trump I don't think the actions of current candidates are "downright sickening".
I turned 18 in September of 1980. I was an avid student of politics, and was very committed to the founders intentions in our Constitution to let the ultimate power rest with the people, controlling the government, rather than government dictating to the people. Reagan dominated Jimmy Carter, because Reagan owned his ideas with true conviction, and he had a clear vision of things as they were, and as they could again be if we righted our course. I proudly cast my first ever vote for Reagan.
I was a child during the Reagan administration. .......it was nice to have a strong leader while I was growing up......these days it hard to know for certain who to trust anymore.....
Reagan was a great president way better than carter he both destroyed the soviets in the inside and outside and reaganomics had an okay affect on clintons term he had his mistakes but his wins were much bigger
Don't let the left wing fool demoralize you. None of these Democrats could hold a candle to Reagan. Democrats who have kept blacks as a permanent underclass - all for the sake of maintaining their power.
I think that President Carter believed in his heart that Government was the answer to everything. Only Government could save the country. I also believe in my heart that Ronald Reagan believed that the human being was the answer. Only hard work and entrepreneurism could make America better. I like Reagan's answer...after all, it's how America started....That is a fact. We The People.
Thank you Ronald Reagan for your great leadership. It was you who changed the mind of my parents to leave the democrat party and vote for you. I was taught dinner table politics that were republican ideas by the age of 10. I heard your speeches and we discussed you among my friends walking home from grade school. Thank you.
Carter absolutely hated Reagan, but stayed professional nonetheless. Reagan beat Carter fair and square. Today's candidates are a total embarrassment and act like complete tools. Heavens to mercy.
Thank you for posting this! I've been looking for decades for a rerun of this but without success, in either video or audio. I heard this on the car radio as a young teen, and never since till now.

Reagan's line about the single line of people unemployed would stretch from New York to Los Angeles at around 1:32:40 was a really interesting technique
THIS is what a Presidential Debate should be and how Presidents and Presidential candidates should act. Unfortunately, both are worried more about getting on The Tonight Show and being a celebrity.
Ronald Reagan: Dignity, grace, strength and courtesy and Pres. Carter though weak and ineffective was a gentleman. None of the blatant NLP usage of Obama.
Ronald Reagan. The greatest president in modern history. I was quite little when he was president. When I heard people talk about him, it was always positive. From both Democrats and Republicans. When he talked to us in his speeches, he talked liked he was our friend. Whenever we had any military action. He would explain what was going on. Why we were going in. And how we were going to do it. He was a great man and a great president.
The time in which this debate takes place is incredible pertaining to terrorism and the airliner hijackings of that time. Considering what would eventually happen 21 years later, it's pretty chilling.
Carter fell flat on his face in this debate! Reagan wiped the floor with him! R.I.P., Ronald Wilson Reagan...1911-2004. You were our greatest President EVER!!!
Back then people voted with their brains and not their emotions like they do today. So many Obama voters today voted for him simply because they liked him, even though a lot of them admitted their lives were no better after 4 years.
Reagan's Presentation during thisdebate! Underscores why I am a Republican! I was 7 years old when this debate originally occured. I just wished I could have appreciated it at age 7.
Reagan saved the world. Then in 26 short years, we destroyed it again. I have high hopes for Trump. He's not the same sort of person as Reagan. Trump is far short of Reagan. But, like Reagan, Trump believes in America and he can beat the mainstream marketing machine. In 2016 that's the best offer we're going to get. Plus, the age we're in, Trump fits. Reagan could afford a lot more decency when he was going against elites who wanted to remain decent themselves. In 1998, when Clinton didn't resign, the media jumped the shark by sticking with Clinton. There is no decency, not even faux decency, anymore. A person like Trump is the only one that can do the job in the 2016 climate.
The Misery Index was a mistake for Carter. It did not do too much to win against Ford, but when Reagan used it against Carter himself, he defeated Carter right then and there.
Between 24:40 and 24:52, RONNIE took Jimmy to school! "The idea that my tax cut proposal is inflationary, I would like to ask the President why is it inflationary to let the people keep more of their money and spend it the way they'd like, and it isn't inflationary to let him take that money and spend it the way he wants?" I remember seeing that and saying, "RONNIE got him with that one!" It was all downhill for Jimmy after that. Towards the end of the debate, RONNIE said his famous, "There you go again." Then when RONNIE said, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" I knew this election was over! We need a RONNIE now!
"We must share in scarcity and sacrifice and get used to doing to without....." For people who want to know why many Americans love Reagan so much-that quote right there revealing Jimmy Carter's message regarding economics is the exact reason. For those that wonder why people hate Obama so much: He believes the exact same thing. Reagan brought the attitude that America deserves to be prosperous, and the idea that anyone should "get used to failure" so to speak is absurd. The economy was in the tank in 1980 as it is now and I think Carter is Obama's idol, that isn't a good thing by a long shot. Reagan made Americans proud to be American again, hence the 1984 slogan: It's Morning in American again."
Contrast the class and dignity of Ronald Reagan with the shrill/hysterics of Donald Trump---never during this debate did Reagan call out Carter as a "Liar"/threaten to sue/belittle him etc--Reagan would simply point out that his assertions were wrong and when Carter kept making more of them-Reagan would retort "there you go again"--I really miss Mr. Reagan--you may not have agreed with his policies etc but he was a gentleman and respected his opponent
We'll never get another Ronald Reagan because that man was completely unique. He was a Democrat before he was a Republican, which gave him the perfect mix of the two. Reagan understood that you can't always be gridlocked by debt in order to make good decisions. He did go on a huge spending spree, but it was to infuse money in our defense department that Carter had taken from us, ceding power to the USSR. We needed to modernize our military quickly and he did that. Republicans would have become gridlocked by such an issue, but Reagan got it done. He also understood not only that Liberals were wrong about their ideas, but he had the communication skills to tell Liberals why they are wrong. Conservatives like me and even a few of the politicians who understand it find it easy to rationalize what is wrong with Liberal thinking, but our message appears very hateful and disingenuous to them and thus is unattractive. They refuse to listen not because Conservatives aren't bright, but because we communicate in such an arrogant and sometimes apparently hateful way (even though there's seldom ever hatred implied). Reagan and Bush Sr. were great at the gentle touch needed to allow Libs to see that conservative thinking is not hateful or unsympathetic. Indeed, this is shown in this and other debates. Modern-day Republicans have lost that message and simply trample over Liberals with facts rather than providing them with direction and understanding. We need another Republican like that, but considering how tightly parties hold to their lines now days, we'll never get that again. The best thing we can hope for is a Conservative with the well-being of the United States on his mind, even if it is only to make a quick buck for himself. Better to have a corporate mongrel in office that is hungry for money than one that is hungry for power. Money has no emotions nor aspirations, but those with power operate on nothing but those emotions.
DBCOOPER The Debt was a problem that he created, but we would have never weakened the USSR had we not have beefed up our defenses. Reagan made bold and challenging statements to the USSR, something Carter never did. Carter wanted to shy away from conflict despite still being in the thick of the Cold War. Reagan didn't start the war on drugs, that was Richard Nixon, who coined the phrase in a speech.
The Soviet Union was going to collapse with or without Reagan boosting defense spending in the U.S. A country that was run like and had so many critical flaws in its economy and infrastructure was bound crumble. It was a house of cards that Reagan just helped to blow on. Though, admittedly we didn't even know this was the case until a couple decades later. Sure, Nixon started the war on drugs, but Reagan took that war to a whole new level.
This is an Excellent Post, I'm a conservative who evolved out of my liberal college years and I feel your example is an excellent talking point for other conservatives to consider. My own father is very liberal and is completely offended not so much by issues but my overall idealism of life in general. We don't even talk anymore. I assume that liberals like him tend to be sensitive to a fault and this lack of sugar coating on my part have caused a communication breakdown.
DBCOOPER *The USSR would have collapsed anyhow?* No, they wouldn't have. To say otherwise is to not understand the situation. During the Reagan presidency, The USSR was attempting to turn Afghanistan into another one of its satellite communist countries. We sent troops in to help the Afghans fight the Soviets off. Without the boosted military, this intervention does not happen. The USSR put all of its eggs into the Afghanistan basket foolishly and lost the conflict. When they lost, they were unable to pay their troops and had lost the economic resources to even try. This is what caused the collapse. *Reagan took that war to another level?* All of the presidents, both Liberal and Conservative, were for the war on drugs. This wasn't just some kind of partisan thing where Liberals were always for legalization of drugs. You would have to have been alive at the time. Drugs were the ultimate sin. If you even used drugs at the time, you were looked at almost like a murderer to everyone, someone who doesn't belong in society. Perhaps because of the Internet, people got a better look at druggies and information spread around that, most of the time, the druggies are relatively harmless
Zac6230 That makes you old, just kidding, my girlfriend is from the 1970's so I shouldn't complain, but still as a 1990's kid I find you relatively old. :-P
Yeah, inflation is a bitch! Part of the reason for the fall of Rome. The Denarius was first 100% silver and it's lowest value was a fraction of 1 percent.
Carter didn't learn from the Kennedy-Nixon debate. When it comes to TV, presence is everything. Carter looks dopey here, and his stumbling speaking style doesn't help.
true for all the points listed...I guess my main point was when Carter may have fully 100% realized that and perhaps the undecided voters were convinced Reagan was the better choice.
I was just a lad back in 1980, I must say after watching this debate from start to finish the Carter actually did better than Obama did in the 2012 debates. Reagan had it in the bag as Carter was just too liberal and was more more of a humanitarian then a commander in chief. Romney is no Reagan and Obama is way worse than Carter, geesh this country has lost it's way
YouRa Loser Try again... Nothing like spending TRILLIONS on ONE WAR with THREE THEATERS, when we could have won that war in a few years for a few BILLIONS of dollars if not for the traitorous left in our country determined to paint us as monsters and our monstrous enemies as victims, and the weakness of our President who thought he could win the war by being nice to barbarians. The trillions spent are to be laid at the feet of those in America who would not appoint me Dictator for the duration of the emergency. In 2003, we should have invaded Iraq, who fired on our warplanes in violation of the armistice, who did harbor and train Al Qaeda, and who were opportune for subjugating the middle east. After conquering Iraq and Afghanistan (NOT "liberating" them), we should have appointed American governors-general, instigating martial law where disobedience to any American order equaled death for you if you were lucky, death for you family if you really annoyed us, and both used as staging grounds for crushing Iran between, and then swinging west in a hammerblow to conquer Syria. And then given the rest of the middle east an ultimatum to turn over all Al Qaeda elements, especially bin Laden, or face destruction even worse, and to reject Sharia law, or face perpetual subjugation. As Ann Coulter put it, "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." This is how you fight 7th century barbarians on the cheap; fight like it's the 7th century. That's another reason the war was so expensive; we had to use all these high precision weapons, and high-tech (read: expensive) systems so we minimized the number of our enemies who died or were injured. In WWII, we would have more than a thousand B-17 flights to hit a target, each plane carrying approximately 10 - 500lb bombs. Unguided bombs. 10,000 500 lb bombs to drop on a single target the size of a factory. The B-52 is, I believe, still in service. It could carry 84+ 500lb bombs. Having had such a long service life (and therefore amortized out), we could have saved a great deal of money by carpet bombing our enemies in the middle east rather than using million dollar missiles to take out a single room. So, the expense of that war can be laid at the feet of weak sisters who evidently cared more about us hurting our enemies than about failing to win the war. Now that war will have many, many more theaters, and will take more years of expense to settle, with ultimate victory more in question than ever before.
Hiraghm That is madness. Sounds like a 21st century version of colonialism. We cannot treat the world as our playthings and we cannot remake the world in our image.
Colonialism... you mean back when Africa was productive and prosperous? It's no more colonialism than was the occupation of Japan... which was to Japan's great benefit. "Plaything"? Who's playing? We better be able to remake the world in our image if Mankind is to have any kind of decent future.
This is a debate,
They talk about the issues and are respectful.
The debates of today are shameful
Agreed
Haha, 32 years later, we're still talking about "what are you going to do about Afghanistan and Iran?"
the best part of the debates is that the candidates were allowed to pause, gather thoughts sometimes fumble over their words, and no one cared because what they said is what mattered. Nowadays we judge politicians on how well they can polish their empty words
This is what a presidential debate is supposed to look like for those who don't know.
Notice how civilized and relatively informative this is compared to today's debates.
+CapAnson12345 mailny bacsue yiu had serious moderaterors that didnt try to push there agenda by asking dumb qustions also you didnt have donors and other idiots in a auduince
I know right, I can barely watch most of today's debates.
+CapAnson12345 : It is like night and day. Debates now are like an episode of a reality TV show, and not because of Trump being on reality TV in the past. Notice the panel is sitting down and calmly and respectfully asking questions not standing and confrontational. The TV set is muted and not a flashy stage like American Idol.
+CapAnson12345 What you said is so right and applies even for far before Mr. Trump's era.
If Ronald could see how his fellow republicans are treating each other he would be absolutely disgusted by what he would see
These debates are so civil and respectful. The mod's don't seem biased and the candidates seem to want to talk about issues. What happened?
When did Reagan ever have a grasp of any of the issues? The man was a plagiarist.
Idk i think trump happened
Reagan wasn't polite and civilized. Do a simple search for Reagan and My Mic. I Paid For It. Which is a line he stole from a movie.
Wow, what happened to our Presidential debates? These men actually had to give intellegent, well-thought out, articulate answers to very specific and precise questions. What a revolutionary idea.
Back in an era where you could civilly disagree politically. Nowadays its like everyone wants to cut heads off for simply disagreeing
So back then, debates were actually focusing on issues in the country rather than boasting about poll numbers and insulting the candidates?
thats right, we need a person like ronald reagan.
Yup! What a shame it's become. Peace!
LITTLE MARCO!
Oh please no. The world can't afford that again.
+Nightbob Sounds like something Jerry Springer should mediate.
I decided to watch this to see a debate in which even the weaker candidate is clearly better than any candidate in the last four elections.
Styxhexenhammer666 666, swings and hits a freaking HOMERUN!
mark fenner he's that "manson didn't kill anyone nutjob" which kind of reflects badly on you.
"We don't have inflation because the people are living too well, we have inflation becsuse the government is living too well" brilliant Ron
I don't understand what that means. Anyone care to explain?

The way Reagan speaks... jesus, no one speaks like that anymore. So eloquent and his words are so thought out. Its astonishing and amazing.
Oh please...Obama speaks just as good, even better
+lorilemonade Yes, President TelePrompTer speaks really well.
Obama is a true intellectual. Reagan graduated from a hick Christian college with low academic standards.

REAGAN: The last TRUE Conservative ... God bless him...
Reagan was a well-read, knowledgeable, thoughtful man of vision. The media always portrayed him as a clueless buffoon -- and Reagan loved that!!!
Reagan, one of the greatest Presidents of all time.

One of the best Internet Explorer jokes I've seen
Ron, Nancy RIP
I know I'm a Republican and comparing Reagan to Trump makes me sad.
+darkduck2000 I am still voting for Trump!!!
+Gallo “Greytoppy” de Combate Thats stupid but I guess if you enjoy being lied too, it is still a free country.

Convinced once again that Ronald Reagan was the best president of the modern age.
This Reagan guy's got my vote.

mariogamefreak1 Trump will do fine
+Billy Killett Long Live President TRUMP!

Reagan was the greatest President of my time
You must be joking.
God bless Ronald Reagan. I can't even imagine how he would turn around in his grave seeing America today. Boy do we need him now!
God bless you, Ronald Reagan.

Imagine if any of these guys debated Hillary today.
RIP Ronald and Nancy Reagan. It was a storybook love story. We won't be saying that about bill and hillary
And the folks who love Bill and Hillary won't be saying how the Reagan's cared for the American people
lorilemonade true dar
Amazing how much history repeats itself in terms of the issues and how similar the talking points for both parties remain as they were 32 years ago.
back when debates were intelligent and honorable. both candidates showed class. I liked Reagan and I'm a liberal
Man, Reagan was presidential material
Reagan's line about the single line of people unemployed would stretch from New York to Los Angeles at around 1:32:40 was a really interesting technique
Reagan's question at 1:31:45 crystalized this debate perfectly. One of the most powerful closing statements in modern presidential debate history.
I'm endorsing old footage of Reagan for President in 2016!
Reagan is such a good speech maker.
THIS is what a Presidential Debate should be and how Presidents and Presidential candidates should act. Unfortunately, both are worried more about getting on The Tonight Show and being a celebrity.
It was great to have a candidate who understood conservative principles well enough to communicate them.
May you rest in peace Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan: Dignity, grace, strength and courtesy and Pres. Carter though weak and ineffective was a gentleman. None of the blatant NLP usage of Obama.
Carter seems like a good guy with bad policies and lack of charisma
Reagan's opening remarks alone must have boosted him up 5%
It`s hard to believe Carter is still alive. this debate was like thousands of years ago haha.
36 moron
its more respectful in part because Carter was a decent man.
RIP Nancy Regan 1921-2016
May her and and Ronald rest in peace.

Ronald Reagan. The greatest president in modern history. I was quite little when he was president. When I heard people talk about him, it was always positive. From both Democrats and Republicans. Sorry pal, but I'm old enough to remember Ronald Reagan, and I can flatly tell you Obama is no Ronald Reagan. It's not even close.
It's just astounding to me that we have gone from actual peaceful debates like this to complete and utter chaos.
REAGAN: (paraphrasing) "...when I was young, the nation didn't know it had a racial problem."
reagan was an absolute legend. so glad this is out there to watch. thank you !
The time in which this debate takes place is incredible pertaining to terrorism and the airliner hijackings of that time. Considering what would eventually happen 21 years later, it's pretty chilling.
Jimmy never stood a chance.
Carter fell flat on his face in this debate! Reagan wiped the floor with him!
R.I.P., Ronald Wilson Reagan...1911-2004. You were our greatest President EVER!!!
Politics aside, Carter looked timid, afraid, and weak. Reagan was confident, authoritative, and ready to lead.
Back then people voted with their brains and not their emotions like they do today. So many Obama voters today voted for him simply because they liked him, even though a lot of them admitted their lives were no better after 4 years.
msmithstud Throughout history, people have *always* voted with their emotions, including during the time of Reagan.
bzy bee Reagan worst president in a generation. Probable worse then Bush w.
"We don't have inflation because the people are living too well. We have inflation because the government is living too well." EXACTLY
They shook hands.
Reagan's Presentation during thisdebate! Underscores why I am a Republican! I was 7 years old when this debate originally occured. I just wished I could have appreciated it at age 7.

Reagan was the greatest!
He was an actor and spokes person for General Electric, before assuming the office of Governor...that is why he was good.

I remember seeing that and saying, "RONNIE got him with that one!" It was all downhill for Jimmy after that. Towards the end of the debate, RONNIE said his famous, "There you go again." Then when RONNIE said, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" I knew this election was over!
We need a RONNIE now!
There you go again...
I like how there's either no audience or they are serious and quiet. It's not treated like a damn sporting event.
Now they can both rest in piece
1:22:00 "I was a democrat. I said many foolish things back in those days."
Ah ha! That really made my day.
There are to many haters LIERS and cheaters against ronald reagan the strength that Americans once had
Regean policies still stand today & we need them now more than ever
Remember how different and SANE this country used to be?
Contrast the class and dignity of Ronald Reagan with the shrill/hysterics of Donald Trump---never during this debate did Reagan call out Carter as a "Liar"/threaten to sue/belittle him etc--Reagan would simply point out that his assertions were wrong and when Carter kept making more of them-Reagan would retort "there you go again"--I really miss Mr. Reagan--you may not have agreed with his policies etc but he was a gentleman and respected his opponent
Just finished watching the GOP debate....my god, bring back the golden days!
No kidding, I'll Lincoln and Reagan are both spinning in their graves at Donald Trump
He also exploded the national debt, started the failed war on drugs and crime, and saw a drastic rise in crime under his watch.
This is an Excellent Post,
I'm a conservative who evolved out of my liberal college years and I feel your example is an excellent talking point for other conservatives to consider. My own father is very liberal and is completely offended not so much by issues but my overall idealism of life in general. We don't even talk anymore. I assume that
liberals like him tend to be sensitive to a fault and this lack of sugar coating on my part have caused a communication breakdown.
DBCOOPER *The USSR would have collapsed anyhow?*
No, they wouldn't have.
*Reagan took that war to another level?*
All of the presidents, both Liberal and Conservative, were for the war on drugs.
This was the day before I was born.
that makes you awesome! 1980 represent!
I know your birthday.... Now I know where you live
Zac6230 That makes you old, just kidding, my girlfriend is from the 1970's so I shouldn't complain, but still as a 1990's kid I find you relatively old. :-P
Zac6230 Happy birthday.
Zac6230 this debate was on the eve of my 11th birthday. lol
Down with the Federal Reserve !
Amen!!
I always find it interesting that those who claim to have 'open minds', are the one's who are the most closed minded. Truth.
Reagan why did you have to go?
I love carters face after the first question when Reagan answered like he already knew he lost.
Reagan wrote checks from the Oval Office to people who wrote to him for help.
59:30 Democrats for coal? I'm confused.
how could anyone think Trump is like Reagan? Im not a Reagan fanatic, but I can say one is way more coherent than the other.
Carter was defeated @1:31:20 and that's all she wrote.
+pete saws Nope. he lost the election at 56:02
true for all the points listed...I guess my main point was when Carter may have fully 100% realized that and perhaps the undecided voters were convinced Reagan was the better choice.
+pete saws IMO, Carter was defeated on November 4th, 1979
1980 was the election year
+Maiden Utah Yes, you are right Carter was defeated the day Iran took those Americans hostage, and that One year prior to the election.
I was just a lad back in 1980, I must say after watching this debate from start to finish the Carter actually did better than Obama did in the 2012 debates.
Reagan had it in the bag as Carter was just too liberal and was more more of a humanitarian then a commander in chief.
Romney is no Reagan and Obama is way worse than Carter, geesh this country has lost it's way
Yea nothing like spending TRILLIONS on two useless wars when that money could have spent on research, education, infrastructure, etc
YouRa Loser
Yes Bush's and Obama are not bright.
YouRa Loser
Try again...
Meanwhile in 2024:
"I DID work at McDonald's...."
