This video has been so informative!! Thank you very much, highly appreciated you showing us around and sharing what it's like studying medicine in University of Otago!!
OMG!! I'm a yr 12 student in NZ planning to go to med in Otago. Honestly, all of your videos have been really informative to me and it gave me lots of help about understanding how med school works!! I really like to thank you with all those helps. If you could, I would actually also like to hear your old life as the hsfy or bioscience. I'm not pressuring you or anything but that would be thankful!!! Thank You!!
Hi Doc! Should I need to take either one of the HSFY, BSci, or Supergrad something though I already graduated in Bachelor of Arts in Psychology? Please help me, badly needing information. Thank you!
Aha far from a doc at this point! The Health Sciences Admissions Office should have the answers for you: Tel 03 479 7428 Email health-sciences@otago.ac.nz Course advice at Otago is also really good to talk to. If you have trouble getting in contact with either of them, Ask Otago should be able to help.
Hi Gavin, y mentioned somewhere that you did HUNT as your 8th paper in HSFY - I am in Year 13 hoping to try and get into medicine at Otago next year. I'm interested in taking HUNT as the optional 8th paper, but was wondering how you found it? Easy/hard? Useful? Recommend?
Yeah HUNT was pretty good and Sheila is a bit of a legend. Actual nutrition education in medical school is pretty scarce which is unfortunate based on how much good it can do for people so definitely worth taking a paper to learn about. Felt like I learned a lot, particularly in conjunction with reading the book "How not to die" by Michael Greger. High grades are definitely achievable and there is some overlap with bioc and hubs192. Stats is another good one to consider. Don't get much quant training in medschool. Also, a good chunk of medical studies use questionable methodology or conclusions which don't directly follow their results. Having a bit of training to be able to spot these things will serve you well. Even if it's as basic as actually understanding what a p-value is and when it is meaningful. Grades wise for stats, people that have studied it before find it real chill, and people that haven't say it's like a normal paper but they learn a lot.
Hi, i have an upcoming interview for medicine in Otago. I’m assuming one of the questions that is likely to come up is why Otago. So I’m interested in your opinion on what makes Otago University different/special compared to other universities in terms of student life, education, and so forth. Thanks in advance!
One thing you could mention is that Dunedin isn’t a major centre and therefore most people at the uni have moved from some place else. This creates a base level of independence in all the students and is a great environment to learn and grow in
It's not exactly the same but yes, roughly similar amounts proportionally. We've got Public Health and Hauora Maori as vertical modules. In fact, next week is the Hauora Maori in context week so we'll be focusing on that for 4.5 days. EPE and Ethics also expand on medical humanities content.
Nah man I did the same thing. It could put you at a disadvantage if you want to do stats for your optional 8th paper, but there’s no reason to not just do another one. I did hunt (human nutrition)
@@GavinBishop072 does taking an eighth paper give a better opportunity at getting into med or other professional programmes? I’m considering taking HUNT as an eighth paper
Be curious, lean into that drive when you have it, use your seniors, talk to the people in the years above about how they did stuff and resources and learn how to use a calendar!
Hi. I am in the final semester of my undergraduate studies and I want to do my masters programme in NZ. the problem is that I majored in American and British language and Literature and I want to do switch to medicine or nursing. Please what is your advice? Are you an international student there? 'cause you have an American or Canadian accent.
Hey Favour! I’m not an international student, been here for 9 years, but good catch! So sorry that isn’t something I know too much about but would recommend trying to contact the departments at NZ universities (Otago and Auckland for medicine).
Hello, if I take HSFY and passed, I am qualified for ELM2? Btw, I’m a first year student of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science here in the Philippines and I’m planning to apply at University of Otago.
I don't know the nuances of international admissions, best to check the website and speak with someone over the phone :) www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/students/professional/medicine/

Is FY1, FY2 and Registrar at university of Otago and is it separate from bachelor of medicine and surgery?
FY1 and beyond happen wherever you get a job which could be anywhere in NZ. Yep they are separate from the degree but part of the same classic pathway

Hi, is this a study to become a doctor?
Do i have to take these courses to become a doctor?
Yeah bud, well a medical doctor at least
Hey if I take calculus in year 13 instead of stats will I be at a disadvantage

Do you have any advice for getting through high school and first year med school. Thanks. :)
